For every wolf she felled, three more grappled each other, heedless of her presence, heedless of anything but blood.
“ENOUGH!” she roared, her voice breaking like a whip crack across the yard.
For a breath, it seemed to stall them. Heads snapped toward her, eyes wide, fangs bared. But then Garron surged forward, face slick with blood and triumph.
“See?” he spat, shoving one of her loyalists aside. “They don’t fear you anymore. They smell weakness. They smell—”
Nicole didn’t let him finish. She lunged, hitting him square in the chest, driving him back into the dust. His breath blasted out under the weight of her fury. She straddled him, hand pressed hard against his throat.
