Though witches had the ability to manipulate and control energy, power, nature, etc they had to draw that ability from somewhere. Most witches drew it from one of the four elements; Water, Air, Fire, and Earth. Some from nature which was partly Earth. Then black magic used sacrifices and blood to generate power. Wizards were said to be connected with the 5th element which was the Spirit and Sorcerers which were the highest witches could draw energy from all of them.

He smiled, remarking how that day had replayed in his mind continuously for the past six years. As the witches commenced their chant in an unfamiliar tongue, a sudden wind began to displace items from the table, sending papers into a flurry. The candles, once lit, flickered to black.
