She looked like a woman in her late fifties. "How may I help you?" I ran my eyes over her body. At first glance, you'll think she's not special but I knew she was, I could feel it. Anyone who'd experienced the presence of a god or a higher being like the fox deities would know. The woman was suppressing her presence and she might not be a woman to begin with. "I'm looking for Edwin Strife. Where can I find him?"

At their head was a woman who looked exactly like me, but her eyes were cold, dead pits of obsidian. "Welcome to the Past, little Sun-Walker," the woman said, her voice a mirror of my own. "I’ve been waiting a hundred years to kill the woman who replaces me." Eryx stood beside me, his sword igniting with a fire that was no longer red, but a brilliant, lethal violet. "We’re in the wrong time, Darlene," Eryx whispered, his hand tightening on mine. "No," I said, looking at my double. "We’re in the only time that matters."

On the wall beside it, a small screen displayed the bound woman again—her compartment feed. Her eyes were bloodshot. She was shaking, rocking slightly. Tape still across her mouth.
