Like walking into a room you have only visited in memory. A soft clinking sound echoed behind me. Beads. I turned. The woman stood a few paces away, draped in layered fabrics that shifted like smoke. Strands of beads hung from her wrists, her neck, woven into her dark hair. They chimed faintly when she tilted her head. Her eyes were ancient. “You,” I said evenly. She regarded me as if I were both predictable and disappointing. “Time is running out,” she said. Her voice did not echo, yet it filled the space.

Well he clearly didn’t make it up right as I seemed to wake after twenty minutes each time. Just as I began to wake again I heard footsteps come from behind me and a sharp jab again in my neck sent me back into darkness. Within minutes the darkness had faded and was replaced by a large green field overlooking a lake. Sitting on the bench at the edge of the field was a woman. The woman looked to be in her early forties if I had to guess, she had long straight blonde hair with a couple of white streaks. She had a flawless complexion with big green eyes.

I told myself that when the footage first appeared. When the dock clerk swore he’d seen her. When the trail led me here. I told myself I was chasing the wrong ghost. But my instincts won’t let me stop. The woman leaves just before midnight. She walks fast, avoiding the streetlights, cutting through narrow alleys that reek of salt and diesel. I follow at a distance, keeping to the shadows. When she reaches the waterfront, she stops at a public terminal one of those old biometric ID scanners for border crossings.
