The ground split open, a narrow fissure glowing faintly, and from it rose a single truth, pressed into Sarai’s mind with ruthless clarity:
For the child to remain hidden, the devil must be bound.
Malik sucked in a sharp breath. “That’s it,” he said quietly. “That’s the cost.”
“No,” Sarai said immediately, shaking her head. “There has to be another way.”
He cupped her face, forehead resting against hers. “Love was never free, Sarai. I just didn’t know it would ask this much.”
“What does bound mean?” she whispered.
Aunt Dee answered, voice heavy. “It means his access to the underworld will be severed. His name will stop carrying weight there. He won’t be hunted but he won’t be feared either.”
