He reached out, pressing the cold metal tip directly against my bottom lip. "Sign it," he whispered, his dark eyes dropping to my mouth. "Or watch your world burn." I snatched the pen roughly from his grip. The cold metal felt heavy and foreign in my hand. My hand flew across the bottom of the page, pressing hard enough to almost tear the paper. I signed my life away. I threw the pen onto the silk sheets. "There. You own me." Roman picked up the contract, silently inspecting my sharp, angry signature. He folded the document carefully and slid it inside his tailored jacket.

I say, taking a step backward. "Why? Are you scared?" "No." "Then prove it." A piece of paper appears in her hand along with a pen. She waves them toward me, and I feel compelled to step forward. I look down at the contract, knowing somehow that I can't leave this place until I sign it. The words on the paper seem to change and blur when I try to read them, like they're written in a language my eyes can't understand. Without reading it, I grab the pen and scrawl my signature across the bottom.

My smile grew wide as Jason opened a file that had a contract for me to sign. “Take your time reading over the contract. If you are happy with everything, we can send an electronic signature and email it to them. They have prepared everything to send over once the contract is signed. I will upload everything to a flash drive for you and print off a copy of the contract.” Jason slid the mouse toward me. Carefully reading over the contract, I bit the inside of my cheek. I had to try to contain the squeal I wanted to release. Although I had gone over everything my mother had, I was still at a loss as to how to create a safe microchip.

"I won't fall for one of your tricks to sabotage me again. You have a knack for that." I see hurt cross his face, and he looks at me for several minutes, seemingly contemplating whether to do what I asked or not. But then, he starts typing something on his system. I play with my fingers nervously, waiting for what he has to show me. Then, he turns the system around, showing me the relevant part of the contract, along with my signature. I read through it, and my face fell as I realized I had indeed come across this document and signed it. My anger at myself for not considering this before signing is palpable.

The chamberlain's expression darkened. “It doesn’t matter how you got here; the fact of the matter is that you are here and there are rules,” the chamberlain repeated. “I need you to sign the contract to put this whole thing behind us.” His tone had gone cold, and panic surged inside of me.
