“I can’t shake the memory of coming back to an empty house. It gutted me, Venus. Like I’d lost you again.” My chest ached. God, part of me wanted to confess right then. Tell him my plan. Tell him about Martha. But I couldn’t, not when I knew what he’d do. So I leaned in, kissed him slow, steady, letting the warmth of it anchor him. “You won’t lose me. Not now. Not ever.” He searched me again, then finally, reluctantly, nodded. “Promise me you’ll stay here.” His tone left no room for negotiation.

He let out a soft laugh. I laughed too, but bitterly. Crying on the inside. Pretending everything was fine. He paused, eyes searching mine. "Can you promise me something?" I nodded. He sighed softly. "I know it’s a lot to ask, but promise me you won’t leave me. You’re the only reason I’m still breathing. The only reason I even want to breathe. So please, promise me you won’t ever leave. You’ll stay with me, and I’ll stay with you. We’ll be together, fight together, protect each other, and love each other—forever."

Fuck, who knew that someone calling my name could evoke so many emotions inside of me. "Please." She pleads making me realise that I haven't answered her. "You're not going to do anything that you don't want to. I promise." My words are firm and said that way for her to know that I'm not messing around here. She's my mate and she's staying here where she belongs with me, even if she can't know any of this for a while. "Promise?" She asks for a moment showing me her youth and vulnerability. "I promise." It's a promise that I have every intention of keeping.
