I murmured, mostly to myself, watching Rhen go rigid beside me, because the woman walking at the head of forty armed wolves down the eastern ridge wore her mother's exact posture, her mother's exact way of holding her chin like the world owed her an explanation, and I understood without being told that Rhen's mind was refusing to accept what her eyes were plainly showing her.
"That is not your mother," Wren said quickly, reading Rhen's face correctly even in the dark. "Look again. The eyes are wrong. The bearing is close, but she is younger than your mother would be now, and there is a mark on her collarbone I recognize."
