Writing From A Different Perspective Novels & Stories

Writing had always been a passion of mine, and I was eager to share my experiences and insights with a wider audience. My first article was a reflection on the lessons I had learned during my time as a lycanthrope. ANOTHER THING I've struggled with a lot, is character development. A character can't instantly change after one event, the change has to be somewhat gradual and also believable. I also need to remember I can't give the same expressions or 'talk pattern' to the characters since the narration is from their point of view. So in a way, I have to change my writing style each chapter depending who's perspective is shown. So yeah, this entire interaction between Jace and Ava, alongside everyone else makes it quite the challenge, but one I am willing to take in hopes of becoming a better writer.

Distance between deciding and starting is where things go to not happen. The kitchen table. Two notebooks. His and hers. He has his compressed formal handwriting. She has the handwriting she developed in the farmhouse years — quicker than his, less formal, the handwriting of someone who learned to write for herself rather than for an audience. They decide on the structure. Alternating sections. His voice, then hers. Sometimes the same event from both sides. Sometimes different events that happened simultaneously in different rooms. Sometimes the same moment from two angles — the way the Edinburgh castle looks different depending on which side of the city you're standing on.

"Maybe that's your answer right there. Maybe your unique perspective is that you don't see the things that other people might view as challenges as obstacles to overcome. Although this story was about Grace, she inevitably thought of her daughter when she wrote about Grace and her mother reuniting. At that moment, she wasn't writing about Grace anymore. Instead, she was projecting her own emotions into her writing. Therefore, she had felt that Grace would be resentful when she saw her mother because she had written this story from a mother's perspective. She had forgotten that she had to write the story from the perspective of a daughter like Grace. "Thank you." Marietta slowly walked towards Caroline and stretched out her hand. "I'm truly grateful to you for pointing out the flaws in my writing!"

I wished I could reach back and tell her— You’re not an extra. You’re not an offering. You’re not a sentence someone else handed you. You’re a story. It started as documentation and has become something else. I started writing it in the third person, the way I was trained — the subject, the operative, the source. Professional distance. But at some point, without deciding to, I switched to first person. I. Me. My choices. My failures. The shift was unconscious at first, and then it wasn't. Then it was deliberate. I wrote about the interview with the analyst and how I felt when she told me about Moreau's daughter. I wrote about the night in Singapore when I didn't know if Celeste would survive. I wrote about the moment in the kitchen when I told her the truth about who I was, and the moment after, when she didn't leave. I haven't told Celes

Meaning he had considered it and chosen otherwise. Meaning he was already doing this differently. I didn't want to think about that. I opened to the last page I'd written and read from the top. My fictional woman was in the middle of something difficult — a scene where she had to make a decision about whether to let someone back in, or keep the distance she had carefully built, or find some third option that didn't require her to be brave in either direction. I had written her into a corner. I wrote for two hours. I gave her the third option — not forgiveness, not distance, but something quieter. Watchfulness. She would wait. She would watch. She would not decide yet.

I whisper to the book before flipping through the pages and stopping on one suddenly. I begin reading the passage out loud. “Oh, my dear, sometimes we look at a situation one way when we truly need to look at it in another way. Try looking from a different point of view or multiple points of view. The amount of common answers will be your answer for this situation.” This could work for so many things. Such simple information, yet it is profound coming from a dead woman. “Thanks again, Mom,” I whisper to the journal before locking it back away in my safe.
