But don’t give up something that makes you you just because the world got loud.” Alder exhaled slowly, like he’d been holding his breath. Wynne stared at the table for a long moment. “I just don’t want to regret it,” she said. “You will,” I said honestly, “if you decide it for the wrong reasons.” She looked up at me then, her eyes searching. “And what are the wrong reasons?” she asked. I thought of Luca and the estate, about how easily women were absorbed into roles they never auditioned for. “Fear,” I said. “And guilt.”

I thought that would make him go away and stop bothering me, but he refused to move. “Meadow, you have done the surgery and my father is out of danger now. I can get another doctor to keep an eye on him. I just want to have a chat with you over lunch. Please, Meadow. I want to make everything right between us again. I know you are still angry with me about what happened between us. Please, I want to make it up to you. Just give me a chance,” Matt pleaded desperately. If I were the same Meadow from seven years ago, I would have melted just by seeing him this way. The Matt I used to know would never beg, even if a gun was pointed at his head.
