Inside the house, the warmth of the hearth wrapped around her like an embrace. Kate and Jina were seated by the fire, each holding a cup of tea, while her father stood near the window, arms crossed but his eyes soft as they rested on Serena.
Jina’s baby—a plump, rosy-cheeked boy wrapped in a knitted blue blanket—was nestled in her arms.
“There’s my sweet nephew,” Serena cooed, hurrying over to the couch and gently lifting him from Jina’s arms. The baby made a soft sound, eyes fluttering open for a second before drifting back to sleep.
