Fiona was paralyzed, the words of Madam Jamaica ringing in her mind after the whisper of silk dissipated down the corridor. Knowing when to release. The words burrowed beneath her skin, half warning, half directive. Her fingers clenched about the envelope, the weight of it in her hand a judgment.
The door swung open, and Charles entered the room, his figure flooding it with unobtrusive firmness. He glanced at her, then at the envelope she held clenched so hard it had bent slightly around the edges.
