There were some kind-hearted colleagues who tried to help her to her feet, only for Mom to shove them aside and insist on seeing me. She cried and wailed while talking, making it look as if we had subjected her to terrible torment. I saw a flash of triumph in her eyes when I stepped into the lobby, then she immediately stifled the look and violently pinched both herself and Matt, resulting in a tormenting wail that hurt my ears.
