The beasts are used to dining on zombies, correct?” Dr. Mac shrugged. “They’ve been around longer than anyone really knows and have always managed to find food. The zombie crisis is still young in comparison. I’m certain that they’ll adapt.”

The thump of my boots echoes in the empty store as I drop down from the window sill, landing in a crouch. The other two soldiers climb into the store after me, and they quickly draw their guns and spread out, trying to make this place as secure as possible. Aaron nudges me in one direction, and I quickly grab two red handheld baskets from a stack near the window, before following him down a nearby aisle. Like many stores in such a large city, there isn't much left in any one place. A lot of the remaining merchandise is scattered around the floor or turned on its side on its shelf, having been overlooked during the first couple weeks of the zombie apocalypse.

Their eyes were empty, unfocused, and they were both wearing a strange, hollow smile. The rescue team leader stepped forward. "Mr. Sands? Mrs. Sands?" Dad suddenly clutched the tin of spam against his chest and shrank backward, his eyes wide. "Shh. Be quiet," he whispered, his voice shaking. "There are zombies out there. Going outside means death. "This is the last of our food. We have to ration it. We have to make it last." Mom nodded along beside him, completely serious. "One less mouth to feed. You'll get to live a few more days."

All day, I hustled for cash and apologized, trailing Snowy and cleaning up whatever he wrecked. At twenty-three, fresh out of college, I'd been all ambition. I was gonna be somebody. Two years later? Bottom of the food chain. I felt like apologizing to the sewer rats. Still, the four of us stuck together. Survived every crappy day side by side. And now the apocalypse was coming. Zombies. Strong. Fast. Everywhere. One snap of their jaws and you were done. Sure, my cats could take down chickens, ducks, mice, rabbits. Feed them wolves, whatever. Didn't matter. They couldn't shield me from zombies.

Mia's POV I lock up the door of this old, abandoned house. Running for days because of the zombie outbreak. I find a room with bars on the windows. It looks safe, but then I hear a noise. Zeke stumbles in from the closet. He was bitten last week. His skin is gray and peeling; pus leaks from sores on his arms. He smells of rotten meat and shit. His eyes are milky white. He groans low. I retreat backward, holding my heart because it's pounding. I grab my knife but he's quick.

Her mouth and throat were hot and dry from nervous anticipation. Past conversations with her aunt about zombies surfaced in her mind. Panic threatened to consume all reason as the movement grew closer. She did her best to focus on what she’d learned from those conversations. Her aunt had encountered a few mutants in the early years of the apocalypse. She said little about it, but Kendra could tell that whatever her aunt was forced to do had an unpleasant impact on her aunt’s soul.
