She wondered with a brief but sharp stab of pain who Samantha would have looked like, before pushing the thought away. “Alright. There’s something else…” She gripped Lauren’s hands. “The scary people who ate that guy’s face last night… They’re the ones spreading this disease. Somehow it got into the water, or something, but they’re also wandering the town, biting people, and people who get bit, turn into them… Zombies, Rhett is calling them. Do not leave the house or let anyone in unless you’re sure they’re… Well, just be really careful, please. But don’t hurt them… they’re victims too. Long story.”

“How do we kill them?” “Like this--” Zael grabs the nearest gun and shoots the zombie in the head --“just like the movies. But their blood is poisonous to us, so be careful.” “So,” I say and sit on the edge of a chair. “What do we do now? We’re stuck. We don’t know how many humans and zombies are in there waiting for us, and we can’t go back. Do we keep fighting and hope we make it?” “No.” Zael turns to me. “No. That’s not an option. We have to survive or our queens are doomed. Send in your wolves.”

She doubted a zombie would be able to locate her there, even an advanced zombie. One of the things about zombies that stayed with them, no matter how much of their thinking and motor skills returned was the fact that they had poor night vision, depth perception, and were color blind. Those factors went in her favor since the opening to the root cellar was beneath a very realistic looking shrub that was attached to the trap door. Its coloring varied from those it was amongst only by the slightest degree and, unless you ran your hand over it, you’d never guess it wasn’t real. Combine that to the fact that it was nighttime, and she felt safe in her selection of hiding places.

Because of this, the number of mutated humans running for their lives and hiding in this land that were being infected and becoming zombies was steadily increasing. Kendra had never encountered a zombie, but her aunt had schooled her on them enough for her to know that they were a dangerous lot. There were zombies at various levels of deformities to their bodies; depending upon whether they were mutants when they turned or simply unfortunate humans. Since they were considered to be death walking, she had difficulty understanding how or why they would become cannibals. Why would they have a need to eat at all? Their fear was mostly because of ghost stories that they heard from the other girls in the dormitory as well as their own classmates. There were all sorts of ghost stories told of the girls’ lavatories that always ended up with students screaming in fright and insisting that they go to the lavatories in small groups. They could track down anyone who owed money, no matter where. When my parents discovered there were no zombies and no apocalypse, they questioned Giselle. She muttered in disbelief, "Impossible!" Mom hesitated. "Why don't we go outside and see for ourselves?" Giselle immediately blocked her. "No, the streets are full of zombies. If you get bitten, there's no surviving it!"
