Damian tries to stand, his body trembling from exhaustion. There’s no way we can make it to the forest. We’re too tired! BOOM! A giant fireball shoots through the air and slams into the two nearest prehistoric birds. Their screeches pierce the air as they beat their wings frantically and pull away. The smell of burning flesh fills the air, but the attack only injures them. It doesn’t kill them. BOOM! BOOM! The birds scatter from the fire attacks and retreat farther back. “Who’s there?” Ash turns cautiously.

Luca said. “So, you were watching the entire time and didn’t jump in to help.” I placed my hands on my hips and stared at him. “Well, yeah. But I was ready to intervene if you turned purple. I was even ready to grab one of those dodo birds over there to beat his ass if I needed to.” I palmed my forehead, then turned to look at the strange birds that were waiting by the water for their next meal. Their beady eyes were weird with one eye looking to the left and the other looking to the right. They had long bills and stubby bodies with short legs.

The bird regarded her with the blank, glassy-eyed indifference of a therapist who had stopped caring about patient breakthroughs three years ago. “You’re doing amazing, sweetie,” Zoya told it, her voice trembling. “Don’t let the haters dim your light. Keep pecking that trash. Own it.” “Tell her, Z,” Mei whispered, crouching beside her. “Tell her about boundaries.” “You have excellent boundaries,” Zoya assured the bird. The pigeon blinked once, let out a soft coo that sounded vaguely like judgment, and walked away. Both of them watched it disappear into the night in absolute, reverent silence.

“It is quiet, and there is not usually anyone around at this hour.” Amelia’s eyes widened. “A private reserve? Really?” He nodded. “Yeah. The resort sponsors it. Helps keep some of the local wildlife safe. Flamingos, turtles, a few parrots…” Her face lit up. “Flamingos? I love them!” They entered together, the soft crunch of gravel beneath their feet was the only sound besides the occasional distant call of a bird. A row of flamingos stood elegantly in shallow water, their heads tucked into their plumage as if posing for them. Amelia let out a quiet laugh.

“This is my secret space.” I close my eyes to take in the smell of the trees and pollen emanating from the flowers. The birds are chirping on the trees, and when I take a closer look, I notice that one of the bird is wearing a knitted scarf. “It was born without feathers, and poor thing went through so many treatments for survival.” She looks at the bird that I’m staring at. I beam, and then my eyes suddenly catch a glimpse of a movement. The rabbit hops closer to me, my lips curl up when I notice two more cottontails next to its original tail, forming a triangle.

said Zia. “I did see they were having a great time talking.” “Yeah.” Zia smiled. “Oh, look at those birds.” She pointed her other free hand on two birds grooming each other on a branch of a tree. Edward looked at the direction she was pointing and found the birds. “They look cute.” “It’s nice that they have each other.” The birds soon flew away. Zia began to walk again but Edward didn’t move his feet. “What’s wrong? Are you hurt anywhere?” asked Zia with a worried expression all over her face. She faced him.

And before I could talk myself out of it, I bent down, unlatched the cage, watching as the birds flew with renowned vigor out of the cage. Ezekiel shot to his feet. “What the fuck do you think you are doing?!” I hit the cage, making sure every bird got out. “Stop it!” he barked, stepping closer. “You don’t get to touch my shit!” “They’re not your property,” I said, heart racing. “They’re birds. Wild creatures. You shouldn't keep them locked up.” “Are you mad?” Ezekiel stood there as he tightened his jaw and his fists clenched at his sides. When the last bird disappeared into the trees.

And, after looking at birds and reptiles and endangered animals from all over the world, Billie found herself relaxing and, strangely, beginning to enjoy her day. Theo chattered excitedly about the plans for the day, his imagination running wild with possibilities. After breakfast, Mama Hazel and Theo set out on their next adventure. They visited the local zoo, where Theo's eyes widened in wonder at the sight of exotic animals from far-off lands. He giggled at the playful monkeys, marveled at the majestic lions, and clapped his hands with delight as he watched the colorful birds flutter by. Dobah was about to ask a question, when he heard the shriek of a bird from above. Startled, he stopped his words, and looked up, aware that he was not the only one that had been surprised by such a loud shriek. Two white little birds. Cute things if he must admit. The birds were playing with each other, females he was sure. He couldn't help but wonder what two female birds were doing together on a high window pane. Shouldn’t there be a male to play a mating dance with them? The birds also were of the same breed with the same markings.
