"Wanna sit on the swing while we eat?" I nodded and smiled around my cup. "Sounds perfect." We ate mostly in companionable silence as we watched the birds dance around the trees. Along the power lines sat three bluejays, one sitting slightly further away than the other two. Almost as if it were ostracized from his mates. My heart fell a little at the sight. The lone bird held both a meaning for me and a message. "Liz?" "Hm?" "You know when Mykel is coming home?"

He is fascinated by their playful antics, their swinging tails, and their clever behavior. Often mimicking them and erupting into giggles. It’s contagious, watching his eyes light up as he learns something new about his favorite animals. Abel, on the other hand, has a deep affection for all the birds. He is especially fond of the cockatoos, with their vibrant feathers and lively personalities. Watching them flap their wings and squawk fills him with immense joy. Abel can’t help but be a laughing fool every time I imitate the birds, yapping and laughing alongside them, inventing all sorts of silly sounds and phrases.

Audrey suggested, and the three of them continued their outing, marveling at the chirping of birds and scurrying squirrels. They soon discovered a petting zoo with goats grazing in a nearby field! Mrs. Vargas carefully lifted Asher out of his stroller and brought him close to one of the goats which nuzzled its head against his small hand before wandering away into another part of the field. She had gone insane. A few seconds later, I suddenly sat upright. Wait… Could it be that the eggs had hatched? Zombies didn’t need food to survive, but baby birds were different. Even though zombies couldn’t feel pain, they still instinctively avoided danger like the acid rain. And yet this zombie bird had actually suppressed that instinct for the sake of its children. No matter what, the bird indirectly helped me more than once. It patrolled the estate every day and dealt with wandering zombies, saving me plenty of trouble.

“What do you want to see?” She looked like a little rabbit. Kane quickly selected Zootopia on the screen. “Huh? You want to watch that?” Aria’s eyes widened. She had actually wanted to see Zootopia, but she didn’t expect a grown man like Kane to want to watch an animated movie. Kane wrapped an arm around her waist and lightly touched her ear with his other hand. “The rabbit in the movie looks just like you,” he said with a laugh. Aria gave him a playful glare. She knew he was teasing her for bouncing around. But mischief sparked in her eyes. “The rabbit and the fox are a pair. Are you saying you’re the fox?”

Violet’s breath caught in her chest, the weight of his question pressing down on her harder than any touch. The scenary felt unbearably still, every sound, the faint hum of the wind and the cricket , the distant honks of the cars passing by, dissolving into silence. His gaze pinned her in place, steady and unyielding, as though he could see through every wall she had carefully built. She wanted to speak, to offer him the truth he deserved, yet the words tangled at the edge of her tongue like thorns. Violet realized that silence could be louder, more dangerous, than any lie.

“How’d you even find this place? It’s supposed to be off every map and then some.” Nara just grinned. “Blazewood told us.” Which, okay, sounds crazy, but her face was dead serious. “Not Kael’s mind-controlled birds. The wild ones. They’ve been watching all the weirdness. They know which side they’re on.” Right then, more of those black birds started landing on the rocks around them, staring at the humans with a look that was a little too sharp to be normal animal curiosity. You could almost believe these birds had seen centuries go by and remembered every minute.

A second one quickly joined the first one and added to the chirps. Frustrated by the noisy birds, Miko dropped her tools and looked up at them with an annoyed kind of death stare. “What do you want? Can’t you see I’m busy?!” The first bird uttered a few chirps plainly and evenly. After it was done, the second one added a few of its own, as though to confirm the first. “I dunno. Go... search for bugs in the courtyard. It’s nice to be useful, isn’t it?” The bird puffed itself up, gave a happy chirp, then floated out the open window behind Miko.

"Don't go past the fountain." Zara looked back at her over her shoulder. Grey eyes. The same grey eyes that Liora had been looking at for four years without being able to look away from them and would probably be looking at for the rest of her life with the same complicated warmth. "Mama the birds," Zara said. Like this explained everything. "I see the birds," Liora said. "Don't go past the fountain." Zara considered this seriously. Then she turned back to the pigeons.

and both parents found exhausting. “Why is the zoo exhausting?” Seraphine asked Damien after three hours of managing excited children among crowds. “We’re just walking and looking at animals.” “We’re walking while preventing James from climbing into exhibits, managing Charlotte’s boredom despite her demanding to come, and negotiating bathroom breaks every twenty minutes. That’s why it’s exhausting.” James, having discovered penguins, refused to leave their exhibit. “BIRDS! WATER! MORE BIRDS!” “Those are penguins. We’ve been watching them for fifteen minutes. There are other animals to see.”
