Kiara stopped mid-step and turned to her, brows raised. There was something in her look that felt too sharp, too sudden.
“Mermaids?” she repeated, her tone dipped in disbelief. “You mean the water spirits from children’s tales?”
Serena shrugged, trying not to seem too eager. “Or sirens. Have you ever heard of them being real?”
Kiara narrowed her eyes at her, suspicious now. “There’s no such thing as sirens or mermaids, especially not around here. This is a wintry forest, Serena. Not a coastal village.”
