VENUS

“What?!” Is he joking?

I look at his aloof face and find no trace of a lie in it. He is serious.

My heart beats rapidly in my chest. How will I fight the Alpha King?

Sydney throws a sympathetic look towards me. I’m dead.

Rowan and I make our way to the sparring grounds. The moment my feet step inside the chalk circle, my nerves coil like a tightened spring. Rowan stands across from me.

“Don’t worry, pup,” he says, his voice relaxed yet firm. “Last five minutes against me. Stay on your feet and I’ll let you stay in the camp.”

A flicker of hope sparks in my chest. This is it. My chance to prove him wrong.

I nod silently, then begin stretching, loosening my limbs. I may not have a wolf, but I have trained well.

I can do this.

But then he takes off his shirt, and I immediately regret having eyes.

My mouth falls open as sunlight kisses every sculpted inch of his chest and shoulders, and a wave of heat floods my core.

No man that old should look that good. It should be illegal.

VENUS“Look. You can’t train in the camp right now but I spoke to Rowan and he has agreed to train you separately.” Bronze explains. I stare at him in disbelief. “You spoke to Rowan?” I repeat slowly. The doubt in my voice is almost impossible to hide. I shift my gaze to the man in question. Rowan looks nonchalant as usual. Also extremely bored, as if he does not want to be here. Rowan leans back in the chair, arms crossed lazily over his chest, his expression unreadable as ever.“Don’t get it twisted,” he says coolly, not even sparing me a full glance. “I won’t be the one training you. I don’t have time for that.”My stomach dips. I try not to show the disappointment on my face. For some ridiculous reason, I believed that he’d be the one training me. I could literally imagine him taunting me for my sloppy moves.I cross my arms over my chest, keeping my expressions neutral. “Then who’s training me?” “People who work under me.” He replies, his face unreadable like a stone. I raise

VENUSBefore Rowan can respond, Nile cuts in with that dry, indifferent voice of his. “She’s under suspicion until proven innocent. Camp protocol.”Sydney glares at both of them with enough heat to start a wildfire. If looks could kill they’d both be dead. Alex seems to be equally pissed as he stares at Rowan. Like he wants to say something but is holding back. I place a hand on her arm and gently squeeze. “It’s fine,” I say quietly, even though it’s not. I just don’t want to create any more chaos. Simon’s words echo in my head. “Can we even trust her now? She’s not who she used to be.” It’s obvious people don’t trust me. I can’t do anything about it now and arguing won’t help. So I turn and walk away, leaving the weapons stand, the crowd, the field and the stares behind me. I keep my head down the entire way back to my room, but my chest aches with each step, my breath coming shallower.Once I’m inside, I close the door and sit on the bed. My fingers grip the bedsheet as I stare

VENUSThe shrill cry of the alarm drags me out of sleep. I blink groggily, the ceiling unfamiliar for a second before my mind catches up. I'm in Sydney’s room.My arms are tangled in a blanket and when I shift, I realize I’ve been sharing the bed with Sid. She’s still fast asleep beside me, her face buried in the pillow, looking more like a sulking child. Across the room, Alex snores lightly on the guest bed, one arm draped over his face. I don’t even remember lying down. At some point last night, exhaustion must have knocked me out cold. The clock blinks. 5:15 AM.I groan and gently shake Sydney. “Time to get up. Training.”She mumbles something into the pillow and tightens her grip on the blanket like it’s a lifeline. “I just want to sleep for ten more hours…”I get it. I really do. The exhaustion we feel isn’t just physical. It’s deeper. Mental. Emotional. The weight of what happened with Rimi still lingers like a dark fog around us.I sit on the edge of the bed. “I know. But if w

ROWANThere it is.I keep my expression unreadable.“Hmm,” I murmur, watching her closely. “That’s not how I saw it.”Her smile falters, just slightly.“I’ve measured Venus’s strength personally,” I say. “She’s not weak. She just hasn’t shifted yet. Her combat skill is solid. You’re implying my judgment is flawed, Olivia?”Her lips part and she blinks rapidly. “No! Of course not. I trust your judgment. Completely.”I hum again and tilt my head slightly. “Good. Then you’ll also understand that I let you walk away from the arena that day because you covered your tracks well.”The color drains from her face. She tries to recover quickly, straightening and laughing softly. “I—I’m not sure what you’re talking about.”My eyes narrow, voice turning cold. “You used your power during a weapons match. You suppressed your wolf’s presence to push it against her and throw her off balance. You cheated.”Olivia’s jaw tightens. “Did Venus tell you that? Of course she did. That girl’s bitter she lost,

ROWANI return to my desk, lower into the chair, and lean back with a slow exhale. My eyes fall on the dim fire crackling across the room, its soft light flickering against the shadows. It’s too quiet for the storm that’s brewing in my head. That message. It wasn’t just a threat. It was a provocation.A test.It could be from one of my enemies in the camp. Someone who's starting to piece things together. Someone watching from the outside, noticing that Venus seems to always land under my protection. That I tend to show up at the right time, interfere when no one else does. They’re watching. They’re calculating and now they want to confirm their suspicions. So they threaten her. To see what I’ll do.I don’t give in to mind games. I never have. But this... This is different. It’s Venus. That damn girl keeps getting herself into the kind of trouble that forces me out of the shadows. I had distanced myself, diverted my attention for a reason. Let the pack believe she meant nothing to me.

ROWANThe office smells like old books and pinewood. The fire crackles in the hearth, but I barely notice it. My hands are clasped, elbows resting on my knees as I stare into nothing, the image of Venus’s trembling form still fresh in my mind. The photo of hers walking with Rimi and that message on her phone makes my fist clench. That message is etched in my head. “You can be next.” A muscle ticks in my jaw.The door bursts open.Bronze walks in, his expression impatient. “What’s the matter now?” he demands. “I’m busy with the crime scene. You could’ve waited.”I rise slowly, my movements precise and fairly controlled. “I can see that,” I say, voice even. “I can also see that you’re completely incapable of protecting Venus. Which is impressive, considering how confidently you claimed she’d be safe in your camp.”His brows snap together. “What the fuck are you talking about?”“She’s been getting threats,” I reply coldly. “Someone’s been watching her. Following her. Do you call that
