Day 1

“Good morning sleepyhead” Kara greeted me as I walked into the ER prior to my morning shift while I yawned. “Had a rough night”? She asked.

“Just, some trouble sleeping” I shrugged. She narrowed her gaze and eyed me suspiciously before leaving to get settled. In our duty, it was almost impossible to not be able to fall asleep. We are usually so exhausted that we barely have any time to do anything else. We had rotation every other month, and the first few days were invested in training.

“Interns” A call from the station distracted us, and without even changing I hung my apron hurriedly and ran to respond. “I am Dr. Naya Winter. I'm on call on tuesday. I’m a general Surgeon. You are starting this week"? She asked them. Both the interns nodded at their mentor. “Introduce yourselves” She ordered.

“I am Kara Louis”

“I am Chance Lopez”

“Kara and Chance, got it.” She nodded. “Anything minor, you call either of them” She directed towards the first and second year residents from her department who were also on call here with her for the day. “Anything major that needs immediate major surgical intervention, call me” She instructed and left them all by themselves.

“Let’s get started,” Chance sighed. Since they were still on training, they had a few days of day duty before a full 24 hour shift. They needed to learn every skill that was useful from day 1. It’s only been two months since their internship began, so they were quite new to this whole thing, and not just the ER department.

After a morning shift of relatively fewer patients, most of them with minor to moderate injuries which needed dressing and a tetanus shot, Kara and Chance decided to take a break. Not that they had to do much, since they were still in the process of learning, but it was still exhausting as hell. Since their practical load was less, all the talking was left to the two of them. In between the conversation, Kara decided to bring up the evening of the day before. “How did it go with Dr. Tyrant yesterday”?

Chance who had just engulfed a giant gulp of water spat it out. Luckily it landed on the ground and not on someone esle's face or body. “What do you... mean”? Chacne mumbled between his coughs.

“He called you right”? Kara frowned. "He said he wanted to meet you" She tried to jog up his memory.

“Just…. wanted to give me some files on the cases I worked on,” Chance shrugged.

“I worked there with you too, why didn’t I get anything”?  Kara raised her brows followed by a suspicious frown.

“You actually did. He gave me yours as well since we are partners.” Chance informed her.

“Fair enough. But you know that I can tell you are hiding something, right”? Kara, putting down her sandwich, looked directly at Chance. “I have known you since high school, there is no way you would almost mess up i.v and i.m just like that, especially with Tramadol. I know we are just getting started but no matter how sleep deprived you are, you never do anything this silly. What's going on?” She asked again.

Chance took a moment to consider, “Fine, I’ll tell you, just promise me you won’t judge me”?

“Yeah, I am not making any promises” Kara shook her head. She knew her friend well enough and how much stupid stuff he is capable off. “Come on, just tell me already” She groaned. Chance took a final deep breath and explained how things went down earlier the day before, “Who knew you can trade sex favours” She teased her friend while laughing out loud.

“I didn't think he would agree”!  Chance whined as well. “I was just trying to mess with him. Like he did with me in the last month. I honestly expected him to have an outburst and storm out or something”.

“Well, if you don’t want to do it, you can always back out,” Kara shrugged. “You are not the one who has to go through with it” she reminded him.

“I know that, but I don’t wanna lose face.” Chance huffed "I already have lost enough in the past month". he groaned. "Kara what am I gonna do?"

“Then get on with it. You haven’t got laid since you broke with Jess anyways” Kara shrugged. “That was like what, 2 years ago”?

“I haven’t been in a relationship since her, who said I didn’t get laid” Chance pouted.

“Did ya”? Kara challenged, raising an eyebrow.

After a brief pause, Chance mumbled, “No”

“Look, with our current lack of time it’s not possible to be in a relationship. Jess broke up with you during our finals specifically for that reason. This way you get to have no relationship, and get laid. Just take it as a win” Kara shrugged.

“I guess” Chance groaned. It was easier said than done anyways. Suddenly he received an alert in his phone, [RTA, report ASAP] (A/N: RTA- Road Traffic Accident)

Both Chance and Kara ran towards the ER and found an unconscious kid on the bed who had multiple bruises, and with parents who had worse bruises than him. “We, we didn’t see the truck” the man, assuming it was his father, gasped. “He passed out, and didn’t wake up”.

“Did he hit his head”?  Chance asked the man.

“I dunno, he was in the back. We were….” He struggled to speak.

“We got this” Chance nodded and asked one of the nurses to page Dr. Winter. “Get an MRI of the head,” he asked another nurse.

“You ordered an MRI? History of head injury?” Dr. Winter asked as soon as she arrived.

“They don’t know, but it appears likely,” Chance answered.  Dr. Winter examined the boy as thoroughly as she could. The kid’s vitals were stable, so things were under control… for now. “Call OS” Dr. Winter asked.

“What”? Chance deadpanned.

“He dislocated his shoulder, we need to fix it.” She explained after taking a proper look at his shoulder joint. “Don’t send interns” She asked before chance could dial one of his friends. The only other person whom he had on number was Dr. Tyson. Reluctantly, he dialed.

“What”? In a Casual way he answered.

“There is a kid with a shoulder dislocation, Dr. Winter asked me to call OS” Chance answered. “No interns” He added as to justify calling him directly.

“Is it anterior”? Dr. Tyson asked.

“What”?

“The dislocation” Dr. Tyson snapped. Usually Chance wasn’t this disoriented, but somehow his anxiousness was about to take over him. He hated that.

“We don’t know for sure,” Chance answered honestly.

“Get an X-ray done. I’ll be done here soon then I will head out there.” And Dr. Tyson hung up after that.

The X-Ray reports arrived before Dr. Tyson did. Chance tried his best to interpret it, given his experience of the last month in the department. But he knew it felt different. This X-Ray wasn’t like the ones he witnessed. Upon Dr. Tyson’s arrival the first thing he asked Chance after looking at the X-ray was, “Does the Kid have seizures”?

“I dunno,” Chance admitted honestly.

“What do you know”?! Dr. Tyson snapped at him, just like he used to back in his department. “You are an intern, go get the necessary information”! He huffed. Chance biting his inner lip went to talk to the parent’s of the kids. The whole way he kept cursing Dr. Tyrant in his head. His shift in emergency had been hectic enough without Dr.Tyrant's traumatic yelling.

Kara and Dr. Winter arrived right at that moment, “Can’t you fix it”? He asked Dr. Tyson.

“It’s a posterior dislocation. There is a chance this kid has seizures” Dr. Tyson informed her.

“That could explain why he is unconscious,” She pondered. “His MRI is clean anyways”.

“Yes!! He has seizures. He is a diagnosed epileptic for the past year” Chance came running and informed everyone whilst trying to catch his breath. “And here is the list of his medications” He handed them an old prescription. Chance was a bit pissed at the parents for not informing earlier, but they are scared for their son, so it was understandable as to why they missed out.

Turns out the kid passed out after having a seizure. It wasn’t uncommon, but due to the accident the parents couldn't help but panic. Taking advantage of his unconsciousness his shoulder was fixed by Dr. Tyson who was assisted by Chance due to his experience. The kid woke up an hour after his admission. By the time he gained proper consciousness, it was found that he couldn't even recall the accident happening, suggesting that his seizure took place before the accident.

His parents were treated and the kid was referred to the neuro department. Before, Dr. Tyson left and approached Chance from the back and mumbled, “So, the deal is still on”?

Pressing his tongue against cheek, Chance recalled the outburst a moment ago. “YEPP” He huffed. “I’ll see you tonight” Chance gave him a sarcastic smile before he was called away.

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
After a long 12 hour shift, Chance could barely feel his muscles. So much running around, so many emergency cases… he was drained on his very first day. Why? Why did he have to choose medicine of all people? Right, he wanted to follow in his father’s footsteps. He was about to doze off when he heard a beep on his phone. [When and Where?] From Dr. Tyrant. Yes, that’s how he had saved his number.
He was about to cancel, but instead he invited him to a bar. After freshening up and a two cups of strong coffee he headed out. At the bar, after looking around he finally spotted the guy he was looking for sitting while laughing with the bartender. ‘This guy can smile?’ Chance found himself wondering.
Without his signature glasses and his hair pulled nice, Chance had to admit, Dr. Tyson looked hot. “You dressed up,” Chance commented as he took the seat next to him. All he wore was a sweatshirt and a pair of Jeans.
“And you didn’t” He snorted. “Are you even up for it?” Dr. Tyson teased.
“Of course,” Chance replied with confidence. “If you had a hectic day like me you would understand” he shook his head.
“You do realise I too used to be an intern once right”? Dr. Tyson reminded him.
“Is that why you were so hard on me? Cause your residents were hard on you?” asked Chance.
“No”.
Chance waited for Terence to explain himself but he didn’t. "Besides, who cares what we're wearing. We should be taking our clothes off" Chance smirked.
"In here?" Dr. Tyson mused at Chance’s courage.
"I got us a room upstairs," Chance smirked. "Thanks to my buddy Barry here" he nudged his head towards the bartender. “I am not trusting you with my address” Chance tilted his head in response to which he received a seductive smirk. "Let's go".
Chance led Dr. Tyson to his room and even though he appeared confident, he was spiraling. He has had one night stands before, but those were the times he was drunk. Chance did consider getting drunk first, but considering how much he trusted Dr. Tyson (none By the way) decided it was better to stay on alert.
As soon as they entered the room Terence snuck incredibly close to Chance and whispered seductively, “Now what”?
Chance pushing aside all his thoughts slammed his lips on Terence while slamming both of them on the door. They made out for a while and Chance definitely didn’t miss the momentarily smirk on Terence’s lips. The kiss tasted like the wine that Terrence was drinking earlier and while that was not enough for getting him drunk, the kiss definitely felt intoxicating. Chance couldn't stop himself even if he tried.
“You are a kisser” Dr. Tyson commented when they finally pulled away to catch their breaths.
“Yeah.. how can one have sex without kissing?” Chance scoffed to which Dr. Tyson simply raised his eyebrows.
“That was good, let’s see how far you can go” Dr. Tyson smirked.
“Challenge accepted, Dr. Tyson” Chance smirked back.
Dr. Tyson cringed as soon as he heard that, “We are not at hospital. Feel free to call me Terrence”
“Terrence it is” a devious smirk crept up on Chance’s face until Terrence dragged him to the bed.
