Chapter 3

I've got a tail, but not the wagging kind

Two in the morning several weeks later and I'm dressed in a black cat suit and barefoot. I slunk around the large country estate searching for my two targets. I jumped up onto the balcony on the second floor of the house and checked the door if it was unlocked. I kneeled and picked the lock. It opened easily. I slipped inside and my mouth is covered by a large hand and I'm pressed against a warm body.

"Don't scream, it's me, Cassian, this house is bugged and full of booby traps," he whispered harshly.

"Did you follow me here," I mumbled sourly and turned with my face pressed against his firm chest. I breathed in deeply and was impressed with his manly scent.

"No, I followed Everett who apparently has been tailing you. Who is your hit," he asked me.

"The couple that live here and should be asleep together in the master bedroom," I replied rather miffed. Cassian held my hand and pulled me along the darkness and twisted and turned expertly through the darkness.

"Can you see the booby traps and how did you get in here, " I questioned rudely and he told me yes and the back door was unlocked. We headed together to the master suite and I pulled out my earbuds and my cell phone. I played my Metallica playlist and we slipped inside the large room. I broke free from Cassian and flipped into the air and landed on the two sleeping persons on the bed piercing both of their carotid arteries. I felt the warm sticky blood oozing from their wounds and my tummy rumbled. I twisted my upper body and sank my teeth as Cyanide pounded in my head. I drank deeply and didn't see Cassian grinning down at me from above. He had used his claws to hang upside down from the ceiling. I felt a piece of plaster hit the back of my head and looked up at him blankly to see his blue eyes glowing down at me. I felt the heart about to stop from the one I was drinking from and jumped off the bed and ran towards the balcony. I stopped suddenly when I heard a tiny heart wrenching sound.

"Mommy," a little voice said.

"Oh fuck," I cursed and Cassian fell to his feet beside me.

"Go on I will kill it," he said firmly and I nodded as I started to run but then paused again as I looked at the little girl's confusion. I rushed towards the child and scooped her up before Cassian reached her.

"You can't keep her Hera," he growled forcefully and I squeezed her more tightly to myself, I removed my earbuds and pocketed them with my cell.

"Kill her and be merciful," he growled and edged closer. I looked out the balcony and back at Cassian getting closer.

"I won't harm children," I growled angrily and ran out the balcony and fell two stories to my bare feet. I could take the child to the police station and leave her there, they would never find me since I can alter what humans see of me. I started to run towards the road. I was far out in the country and would have to run for several miles. I ran for thirty minutes and rested against a telephone pole. The tiny girl had stopped crying.

"What's your name, honey," I asked her and she said Megan. I nodded and patted her brown hair.

"I'm going to take you to the police and make sure no one hurts you, okay," I told her and she nodded.

"My parents got hurt," she mumbled and I said yeah, sorry. I heard a branch break and looked behind me quickly. A tall handsome white blonde haired man with bright green eyes was looking at me curiously.

"Are you Everett," I mumbled sourly and he tilted his handsome face and grinned.

"You know my name, that's flattering," he chuckled and stepped closer.

"Wait sir, I will gladly fight you if you allow me to transfer this child to the police," I told him in all honesty. He stopped and rubbed his chin.

"Alright, deal, I'll help you, climb up on my back and I'll carry the child in my arms," he stated firmly.

"Really, I kinda thought you would just kill the child and go after me," I mumbled softly and he furrowed his brow.

"I don't hurt children, you must have been misinformed," he stated, truly insulted. I shrugged and watched him kneel down before me. I let Megan walk towards his arms as I climbed up onto his back.

He turned to me and smiled.

"Hang on tightly to me," he told me and I wrapped my arms around his neck and laid my head next to his neck. Everett held on to Megan and burst across the fields. He stopped a moment to gain his bearings and shot off once again. I had to keep my eyes closed from the wind blowing in my face. He stopped again and we were on the outskirts of a tiny town. He told me to hop down and I did.

"I'll come with you to the sheriff's office, it's up ahead a couple blocks," he said softly and lifted Megan as I walked next to him.

"Are you in a vampire clan, Everett," I questioned him curiously. He glanced at me and chuckled happily.

"Of course, I'm in a clan, my last name is Acheron," he said with a grin. My eyes widened and I gasped.

"Your father is head of the southern clans, wow, you're a big deal, why are you out here in the middle of nowhere," I questioned. Everett looked at me and his eyes glowed and he chewed on his full bottom lip.

"Your father asked my dad to send me to um, check on you to make sure you were doing well," he mumbled oddly. My brow furrowed and I growled angrily at him.

"Why in the fuck would my father care what I've been up to," I mumbled sourly.

"You're his only child and his little girl, he's worried that you won't find love before growing more bitter as you age," Everett told me and I scowled more. I rolled my eyes as the three of us continued down the dark road.

"I'm not alone, I have Flora and Pudge," I clarified.

"Pudge is your boyfriend," he asked me and I chuckled.

"No, Pudge is my dog and my fur baby," I replied. He grinned slightly and nodded.

"He's your pet and Flora is your familiar, correct," he stated and I nodded.

"So you weren't hired to kill me and Cassian," I asked him and he looked at me oddly.

"I don't know this Cassian, you speak of," he mumbled. A huffed and wondered if that sexy asshole lied to me, well obviously he had. I frowned at my thoughts because I was attracted to the blue haired man. I kicked at the ground as we continued to walk. Everett looked down at me and smiled, as he brushed his fingers down my cheek. I backed away from him as we reached the Sheriff's feeling uncomfortably with him taking his leave with my person. He looked a little dejected but didn't say anything about it.

"I'll take the child in and explain everything since my gift is persuasion," he told me and headed inside with the sleeping little girl. I stretched my back and looked up at the clear night sky that was full of stars.

An arm wrapped around my waist and I'm lifted off the ground. It was Cassian. I recognized his scent. I relaxed and let him carry me to wherever he was headed.

"I can't believe that you were consorting with the enemy, Hera," he said in disbelief.

"Well I can't believe that you were going to drain that sweet little child," I snapped back and he frowned.

"I kill the children because I don't want them to survive without their parents, but you wanted her to live and I eventually would have respected your decision," he told me and pulled me against himself. I grinned slightly because he was compromising with me.

"You are Cassian Aeron, the Slaughter Assassin, correct," I mumbled softly and he exhaled deeply and nodded his head.

"I am and much more and have worked for several centuries to prove my claim," he replied. I grabbed a tree branch and pulled myself away from him.

"Prove what Cassian," I asked him curiously and he smiled and jumped up next to me.

"I want to prove that I'm the true clan leader of the Eastern Clans, not Laslo Sagan," he growled forcefully and earnestly. It truly felt like what he claimed was true.

"In order to become a leader you must take a wife and breed her, then you both must fight your way to the leader spot, making a claim doesn't change that obstacle," I mumbled softly and frowned upon seeing him grinning like a twat.

"You're not a part of any clan, they will kill you and mark you as a rogue, you need a clan's backing crazy man," I snapped and shook my head at him. So beautiful yet so stupid. He jumped on the branch above me and offered me his hand to pull me up. He lifted me easily and I sat next to him.

"Would your father sponsor me," he asked roughly and I gritted my teeth.

"Cassian, I'm not close with my father, after my mother died and he punished my older brother, I basically disowned him. I'm only forced to go to his birthday every year, which reminds me I need a guest," I grinned slightly and eyed him.

"Come with me to his birthday party and tell them you are in the Eastern Clans and I will see if I can get my uncle Eilif Federick to sponsor you, okay," I asked him curiously and he nodded happily at me. His eyes were glowing and he looked so handsome. I cleared my mind of my odd thoughts and looked out across the land. I thought about my father's necklace and wondered if Cassian had his father's amulet.

"Don't you have your family's amulet, it's what will clench your claim," I told him and he eyed me sadly.

"That's what I've been searching centuries for, my father's necklace disappeared soon after his death and apparently no one knows where it went," he growled bitterly. I ran my hand down his arm for comfort. I understood his frustration.

"I think that I will slow my roll for a while and help you, I like treasure hunts," I told him with a grin. He looked down at me and smiled.

"I'd like your company and your skill will be useful for where we would need to go," he chuckled and I chuckled internally. Why in the hell am I doing this for a complete hottie I hardly know? What happened to staying alone, it meant never having to apologize or caring what another person is feeling, I tell myself and am gritting my teeth and scowling. I feel Cassian poking my cheek and glance at him with lowered eyelids and a sneer on my mouth.

"Are you bipolar, cuz one moment you're laughing and the next you're ready to gouge eyes out," he asked me when I bit his finger.

"Ouch," he yelled as I spit the tip of his finger out of my mouth and sighed as it fell down through the limbs of the tree.

"You'll heal," I growled softly and stood up on the branch hearing the light breathing below us.

"Everett's below, he's watching me for my father, so your Intel was way off, plus he's not an assassin," I mumbled sourly and  ran across the limb and started jumping across the treetops. Cassian frowned and chased after me and I chuckled internally calling him a good pet. Cassian frowned and shook his head.

"He's an assassin Hera, a very prominent and professional one who can even persuade vampires and obviously he's smitten with you if he didn't kill you outright," he yelled out, causing me to look back and stop on the branch.

"You're very positive of the words you are saying," I mumbled bitterly and glared at Cassian.

"Yes, you're a very stunningly beautiful woman, for that I am very certain," he stated and I rolled my eyes.

"I was referring to Everett and the information that you read about him," I sighed. He nodded and I could hear the man in question moving up the tree limbs.

"He's almost here," Cassian growled and I shrugged. Cassian frowned and jumped up further just as Everett landed on the branch before me. I looked up at the blonde and could see blood smeared on both of his pale cheeks.
