Lindsay had gotten to the office early and had begun reviewing the reports Cat had left on her desk. Most of the reports were regular calls, but at least one per shift was odd. In the days she had been out of the office, there were three calls about ghosts or poltergeist activity, four unknown animal sightings, and four about strange lights. There had also been a call about an alien spacecraft complete with a crop circle, and as if that was not enough, a claim of a chupacabra eating someone’s c

Max and Lindsay looked at each other and laughed, then Max explained. “The former sheriff, whom your lovely wife took over for, would not ask for a cup of coffee. He would demand that one of us bring it to him. After a while, several people got tired of it and started spitting in it every time he ordered it. On the flip side, your lovely wife, our new illustrious sheriff, has never asked one of us to bring her coffee unless there was a reason. That reason is usually being up to her eyeballs in work and not sleeping for three days. She is one of us and doesn’t ask us to do anything that she isn’t willing to do herself. We also know that if something happens, she has our backs and will defend us if needed. For that, we will always bring her coffee without her needing to ask and most likely never spit in it, unlike her predecessor.” “That explains a lot about all of you and the last sheriff,” Wren said as he took a drink of his coffee. “It does, but yours, I spit in a few times for add

They sat and watched the lights continue to move among the trees. Most of the movements were slow and cautious, but occasionally, one would suddenly dart in a direction and jerk to a stop. Two more times, a light went into the air and came back down, cutting a tree down when it did. Finally, after about thirty minutes, she saw several vehicles coming up behind them. The lead vehicle stopped directly behind them, and they watched someone get out and walk toward Max’s window. “I’m sorry, but we need you to leave the area, deputy,” the soldier said to Max after he had lowered his car window. “Yes, sir, we were only following Agent Gold’s instructions to stay and observe until you arrived,” Max answered. “We?” The soldier questioned as he looked into the passenger seat and saw Lindsay. “Sheriff Gold, ma’am, I wasn’t aware you were here. I apologize for my abruptness.” “No worries, we are quite happy to leave this to you,” Lindsay told him. Max pulled into a driveway across from wher

He opened the department door and held it for Lindsay. When they reached his car, Max opened the car door for her. She just stopped and looked at the door, then at him. “Don’t give me that look. I know Margaret has been mean to you, so I am trying to be nice to you. Now get in the car,” Max told her. Lindsay just laughed, shook her head, and did as she was told. Max always knew how to make her laugh, and when she needed it.Max got in, pulled the car out of the parking lot, and headed toward the address Hanna had given him. He had been driving for several minutes before he said anything. “How bad has she been to you this time?” Max asked. “The first thing she said to me was that my face was disgusting, and I needed to cover it with either makeup or a bag. It has gone downhill from there,” Lindsay told him. “Wow, that is cold even for her. Now I understand why you are here this early. Don’t take this offer as anything inappropriate. I mean it as your best friend and adopted brothe

It was Monday morning, and Lindsay was pulling her car into the parking lot at the sheriff’s department. She looked at her watch and saw that it was not even 6 a.m. yet, over two hours early for her scheduled workday. It had been a night when Lindsay could not sleep, so she had decided to go to work early rather than deal with her mother-in-law. She braced herself for the questions about why she was at work so early. She also knew that Max was working, and he would understand. Max had met Margaret Gold before and had been subjected to her wrath when he had. “Morning, Hanna,” Lindsay said as she strolled into the department. “Good morning, Sheriff. Is something wrong? You are here very early this morning,” Hanna said, slightly confused and concerned. “I don’t know that there are words to describe my current situation or feelings. All I can say is that there is definitely something that is not right. I will most likely be here early and leaving late until further notice,” Lindsay tol

“Linz, we’re here,” Wren called out as soon as he opened the door.“Hi, sweetie. Mrs. Gold, how was your flight?” Lindsay asked as she stood up and walked toward the door.“It was fine,” Margaret answered, then looked at Lindsay. “That thing on your face is disgusting! Why have you not tried to cover it with something? Makeup, a bag, anything really would be an improvement.”“I will try to cover it in a few minutes. It must have gotten worse since I last looked at it. Mrs. Gold, I would like you to meet a friend of ours. This is John Lingerfelt,” Lindsay said as she introduced them. “John, this is Wren’s mother, Margaret Gold.”“It is a pleasure,” John said to Margaret with a polite nod of his head.“That remains to be seen,” Margaret answered him curtly. “In which room are you putting me? I would like to put my things away,” she said to Wren.“I will show you to your room right now, mother,” Wren answered Margaret, shooting a look to Lindsay and John that showed he was already becomi

Wren had picked up his mother at the airport, and he was happy they were almost to his house. It would only be a matter of minutes before he pulled into the driveway and would have the ability to be out of the car and away from her for a moment. The drive had been almost three hours of silence, broken only by his mother’s complaints and snide remarks. Every complaint had somehow turned into a jab at his wife. He was beginning to wonder if he should turn around, take her back to the airport, and send her home. He also knew that if he did, his mother would somehow turn that into Lindsay’s fault as well. Her visit had just begun, and he already wanted it to be over and his mother to be on her way home.“Mother, is there anything you would like to do while you are here?” he asked his mother politely.“No, and even if there were, I’m sure your wife would find a way to ruin it for me anyway,” Margaret Gold answered.“Mother, Lindsay would not ruin it. She wants you to enjoy yourself while

“Roy, are you alright?” Lindsay asked him. Roy looked at her with his brow creased. “I don’t know. I saw something, but I didn’t. I don’t know how to explain it,” he said with confusion. “Come into my office, and let’s talk,” Lindsay said. She waved to Wren, who had been watching, to join them.

The next thing Lindsay remembered was swinging at Wren when he touched her arm. She looked at him and could see his concern and fear. She had fallen asleep in her office. “I’m sorry, I’m sorry. I can’t believe I did that,” Lindsay said, leaning back again and looking at the ceiling. “It’s OK. Cat

“What are you up to, Mikey?” Little Bob asked as he walked into Lindsay’s office. “I wish I knew. I have been checking some of the game cameras in the northern part of the county, where I have been getting some reports about strange things. I can’t explain some of it, so I thought I would ask you

Lindsay was back at her desk with more reports of weirdness to read. Viktor had worked the night shift with Max and had barely spoken to her when she arrived at the office. Lindsay had the feeling that someone had spoken to him about the day before. She looked at the reports Max and Viktor had writ
