Lindsay arrived at her house, not even remembering the drive she had just made. She threw the car into park and got out, leaving the door open, with Wren following close behind. When they reached the porch, they could see wet footprints covering it. There were handprints on the glass in the door and around it. They smelled that unmistakable odor they had come to know and knew what it meant.

“What happened?” she asked as she went inside. Dillon grabbed her and hugged her so tight she could barel

“There was an incident when I tried to tranquilize it,” Wren told her sheepishly. “We have no idea what it is or if it is dangerous. The sheriff and I will be here if you need us, but this is your operation. I want to see how you do on your own,” Wren told Izzy. “Yes, sir. Give me a minute to formulate a plan, and I will take care of it,” Izzy said with a smile. “Maybe I will have the same luck with this little thing that the sheriff has had with a few things.” “Please be careful. These things have a way of looking harmless but can be deadly,” Lindsay told her. “Oh, believe me, I know. I have watched all of the footage from Max’s dash camera. I don’t know how anyone can get into the trouble he gets into,” Izzy said with a soft giggle. “If you have watched those, you know what NOT to do,” Lindsay told her. “Oh, most definitely. Let me grab a few things, and I’ll take care of that little guy,” Izzy said. Izzy walked off the porch and to the van she had driven. She took a black ca

Wren stood up and tucked the blanket around her before kissing her on the head. He turned and went inside to get dressed before his team arrived. Lindsay sat absent-mindedly, keeping track of where the little creature was as she thought about what had happened earlier in the day. She was thankful that things had not been worse. After a few minutes, Wren stepped back onto the porch and walked over to her. “Well, at least it didn’t go very far. I have to get something out of my car,” he said, then kissed her on the head again. He walked to his car in the driveway and opened the trunk. He pulled out a large black case and a small black bag. As he walked back onto the porch, Lindsay looked at what he was carrying and laughed. “Tell me you are not going to shoot that little thing,” she said. “It’s only a tranquilizer gun. I think I need to knock it out to make sure it doesn’t take off into the woods. It is a nice night, but I don’t want a full-scale search,” Wren told her. “If it star

Wren woke up and rolled over. When he did, he knew Lindsay was not in bed with him. He sat up, looked at her side of the bed, and saw Crook lying on the bed where Lindsay should have been, sound asleep. Wren got up, picked up his phone, and tiptoed through the house looking for her. After not finding her, he walked to the couch and picked up the blanket on the back of it before going out onto the front porch, where he found her sitting in her usual spot. “How long have you been out here?” he asked as he sat beside her and placed the blanket over both of them. “I don’t know. All I can tell you is a while,” Lindsay answered him. “I’ve been watching one of your little pets from the base.” “What are you talking about?” “Look in the field. See the white cow closest to us? Look ten feet to the left of it. See that little thing walking around?” “I see it, but I have no idea what it is, do you?” “Why are you asking me?” she asked, then pointed to the two pairs of binoculars sitting on t

“Tell me exactly what happened,” Wren told Lindsay after seeing the bandage on Big Bob’s neck. “We were having our meeting. I started to feel like we were being watched. We were packing everything up, and we heard a growl. We stopped what we were doing, and there was another growl. Just after the second growl, I caught movement out of the corner of my eye, and before I could do anything, Big Bob hit me from behind and pinned me to the ground. I felt it hit him and could hear yelling and gunshots, but I couldn’t see what happened.” “OK, let’s go make sure the guys are getting packed up and that Izzy hasn’t made Randy hide in the car with the doors locked. She is a lot like her big sister and seems to delight in tormenting him.” “Oh, you will have fun with that,” Lindsay laughed.Lindsay and Wren turned and walked toward where Little Bob’s car was parked. They waved to Max and Big Bob as they left the river access in Big Bob’s truck. Little Bob had everything packed and was leaning a

The blonde-haired woman looked at Randy and then at the rest of the group, waiting for Randy to introduce her. When Randy did not, she introduced herself to the group. “Since Randy doesn’t seem to think he needs to introduce me, I’m Izzy Dyatlov. Agent Gold just hired me and told me this would be a good call for me to start with,” she said. Lindsay smiled at her and said, “I knew that Agent Gold was interested in hiring you, but I wasn’t unaware he had. I want to say welcome to the area and good luck with all of this. I’m sure Cat and your brothers have filled you in on the things happening around here.” “Yes, they have, and so has Agent Gold. I also know who all of you are. If you don’t mind, I will get started on Big Bob while Randy gets to work on that thing over there,” Izzy said as she pointed to the creature lying in the sand. “Sounds good to me,” Lindsay said. “I think I will go up by the road and wait for Wren. Little Bob, you want to help Izzy if she needs it?” “Sure thi

“Are you alright?” Wren asked as soon as he answered her call. “I’m fine. I had the wind knocked out of me by Big Bob, but that’s it. Is Randy on his way here? Bob’s hurt and it is more than I can treat. He will need some stitches,” Lindsay told him. “Randy is on his way now and should be there in a few minutes along with my new employee. They will get Big Bob put back together. They might even make a few improvements to him,” Wren said. “That is a nice offer, but I like him the way he is. How long will it be before you get here? “Not long, only a few minutes.” “Good.” “I know you aren’t injured, but are you alright?” Wren asked. “I don’t know yet. Bob got hurt because of me. If I had seen it, he wouldn’t have needed to do what he did.” “Don’t think like that. You are out there because Little Bob asked you to be there. It wasn’t your idea, so blame it all on them, not yourself.” “You and I both know that isn’t going to happen. I am going to go back and check on Big Bob. I wil

Andy pulled out of the parking lot first, followed by Big Bob and Annie. The call was a few miles out of town and took several minutes to arrive. When they did, they were all confused. The club was completely deserted, and the house from which the call had come was dark. They parked in the club's l

“Time to get to work, Annie. Let’s go grab a couple of things out of the car. If this thing really is here, we will need to let Agent Gold know. Before we call him, we have to see if we can safely find it,” Big Bob told Annie. “Do you think this woman is telling the truth?” Annie asked as she foll

“Are you two ready for tonight?” Lindsay asked as they walked into her office. “I think so,” Andy answered. “Is she still riding with Big Bob?” “Yes, she is,” Lindsay answered. “If you never see her again, that means I couldn’t take it anymore and left her in the woods,” Big Bob said, smiling.

Lindsay looked at the clock on her office wall. It was almost 3:30 in the afternoon, and she was waiting for the evening shift to start arriving. Today was the day that Annie would begin training on the same shift as Andy and Big Bob. She knew Big Bob could handle it, but she was worried about Andy
