While the doctor explained that in some cases, although uncommon, one baby could "hide" behind another and that only ultrasounds performed after the twentieth week could provide a more accurate assessment of whether the pregnancy was a single fetus or not, I felt a sudden chill spread through my body, along with a deep sadness.

But as much as I was sad, I also felt determined that regardless of what Brian thought about our babies, I would always put them first, and if things didn't turn out as perfectly as he wished, it was his problem!

"Is something wrong, Charlotte?" Brian suddenly asked, pulling me out of my thoughts.

"No," I lied.

He approached me, holding my face so that he could look at me more directly while using his other hand to brush away some strands of hair that had fallen onto my face.

"Are you sure?" he insisted.

If he had asked that just once, I would have been able to control myself, but when he asked again, holding my face so lovingly, I couldn't hold back
