(KAIRA'S POV)

His hand held a fistful of my hair and bent my head over. My eyes followed his, almost magnetic, unwilling to stray away from those cold green eyes of his. But when they finally did stray, they moved down to his perfect lips and I found myself biting mine as I waited.

Patiently. For him to bend over and to seize my lips—

RING! RING! RING!

I opened my eyes with a frustrated groan and stared at the pretty collages on the ceiling before I turned to the tabletop alarm clock and tapped it to silence.

6.00 a.m.

Mum and Tom left for the airport two hours ago. I know because I heard her come in, drop a note on my table and place a deep kiss on my cheek. I held on to her briefly for a hug before she actually left, then I rolled over to my side.

Now, with sleep out of my eyes, I realized that Mum was gone. I would be spending the next three weeks with Slade as my only family.

"I need to stop seeing him in my dreams. That makes things worse." I muttered to myself as I walked to the bathroom.

But it was hard to keep thoughts of Slade out of my mind.

Especially, that truth or dare kiss. Oh that kiss. It still feels like a dream.

I was replaying it for the thousandth time in my head by the time I was ready and in front of the mirror. A simple t-shirt, fitted pencil jeans and a pair of simple sneakers. My hair was pushed back into a low bun and I was back to being the regular Kaira.

"When did I start wasting time in front of the mirror?" I muttered to myself as I stepped out of the room.

I gasped seeing as someone was there already, waiting for me.

"Finally." Slade sighed. He had been leaning against the wall, scrolling through his phone which he put away. He ran his fingers through his hair as he straightened his imposing posture.

"I have a team meeting this morning. We need to leave earlier than usual."

It was taking me a moment to straighten my thoughts, at least to get over how perfect he looked in dark jeans and a dark shirt that looked anything but plain on him.

But I didn't stare at his clothes long enough, my eyes found their way to his thin pink lips before I could stop myself.

"Eyes up here." He snapped his fingers loudly making my eyes blink back at him.

Not up to three minutes with him and my cheeks were burning already.

"Good morning." I said smoothly and started walking away.

"The dining room is this way, Makaira."

I stopped. It wasn't that I was taking the wrong direction, it was just the way he called my full name. Like it was his to call. Anyhow he wanted.

I turned around without another word and followed him this time. Past the wide hallways, down the massive stairs, through another set of hallways and then the large dining room.

"So, what do you want to have?" He asked casually, like we were old friends.

"Whatever's on the menu." I answered with a shrug, not wanting to be the weird one.

But to my surprise, Slade chuckled. A genuine chuckle that almost made my eyes pop out.

"You have to start acting like a Horton now, Makaira." He pulled out a chair and looked expectantly at me to get seated. "You create the menu, Makaira. You can have whatever you want."

"I'm not a Horton." I corrected and pulled a chair for myself. "And I find it odd that you're saying a lot of words this morning."

He sat down after I did. "Why? Because of yesterday?"

"Yesterday?" I repeated.

"The wedding? The kiss? You jumping into the pool? Our parents in each other's clothes on the stairs…"

"Oh my goodness, please stop talking." I pleaded, not wanting to hear anymore. "I didn't jump into the pool. Someone pushed me."

He didn't reply, he was typing away at his phone.

"Pancakes and eggs for you." He said, putting his phone away.

Within minutes, two house staff wheeled in silver-covered platters.

Slade and I ate in silence and I barely noticed because of how wonderful the food was.

Only when we were back, walking towards his car did I remember the tension he brought close to me.

"I'll be the one to take you to school and to bring you home." He announced as he opened the door for me to get into his sparkling white Jeep Wrangler.

I sighed deeply. This morning, I felt too weak to argue about anything. I just wanted to get to school and away from Slade. As fast as anything.

I got into the car without giving him a reply.

When Slade got into the driver's seat, I lost my breath. The car was big with sufficient space for us and I was tiny enough to stay on my other end.

Why then was his scent suddenly filling up my nostrils? That cologne that seemed to have been made specially for him. So minty, so cool, an underlying scent of musk.

"Makaira."

I jerked my head to him. "What?"

He stared at me weirdly for a moment, then inclined his head. "Your seatbelt."

It took a second for me to break away from those striking eyes of his and as I fastened my seatbelt, I remembered the dream I had. About him. So promising and yet nothing compared to that kiss yesterday or the one at the lake house.

"You are different this morning." He observed, adjusting his rearview mirror.

"So are you." I cleared my throat. "Any reason why?"

He turned to me and I saw a flash of smirk on his face. "I'm warming up to my stepsister."

I flashed him a glare. Something about the word stepsister made my stomach clench.

I rested back in the seat, ready for the longest drive in my life.

  • A Bully For A StepBrother.    The First Time In Years

(MAKAIRA'S POV)I didn't sleep that night. Not a single wink.Every time I closed my eyes, I saw Slade's face. The way he'd looked at me when he said those words. You're mine. The way his voice had cracked just slightly, like he was admitting something that scared him.I tossed and turned, clutching the teddy bear to my chest like it was some kind of anchor.Dream of me?What had possessed me to say that? I'd typed it before I could stop myself, my fingers moving on their own accord. And then I'd spent the next hour staring at my phone, waiting for a reply that never came.He said he'd dream of me.At least, I thought he did. He hadn't actually typed it. But he hadn't denied it either.I groaned, pressing my face into my pillow. This was insane. I barely knew him. He'd been cold and distant and sometimes downright mean. But then there were moments—fleeting, fragile moments—where I caught a glimpse of something else. Something tender. Something raw.And it made me want to know more.--

  • A Bully For A StepBrother.    Carnival Confessions.

(MAKAIRA'S POV)I didn't know what had come over Slade. One moment he was complaining about boredom and checking his emails, the next he was squaring up to this Harry guy like he was about to start a fistfight over a stuffed bear."Step back." Slade's voice had been cold as ice, his jaw set in that rigid way I was starting to recognize meant he was holding something back.I opened my mouth to say something—to tell him it was fine, that I didn't actually care that much about the toy—but the words died in my throat when I saw the look in his eyes.He was furious. Not at me, I realized. At Harry. At the way Harry had looked at me, the way he'd kissed my hand, the way he'd called me beautiful."Slade—" I started, but he wasn't listening. He was already at the counter, slapping down money for the game. The attendant, a bored-looking teenager with acne and a nose ring, perked up when she saw the cash."Three rounds each," Slade said without looking at her. "We'll see who gets the highest sc

  • A Bully For A StepBrother.    The Challenge.

(SLADE’S POV)Life can be a bitch you know! After the first day I set my eyes on Makaira five years ago, I didn’t see her until the first day school resumed after the Christmas holiday. My dad had invited some kids from my school to celebrate Christmas with us and so I automatically assumed that she was one of the kids.I should have found out more about her but she provoked so much emotions from me that I didn’t want to know anything about her. Not even her name. Maybe if I had done my research, I would have noticed the same surname she shared with Mrs Shanice. And maybe I woukd havw not been too blind ans stupid to ignore the striking resemblance they shared. Maybe I would have not been such a jerk and a terrible person to her.If I had known that I would have a shot at being so close to her, then maybe I wouldn’t have been such an asshole—“That was so great!!” Makaira exclaimed as we feel in to step with each other. We had just finished a ride at the Ferris wheel, an experienc

  • A Bully For A StepBrother.    A Fair!

(SLADE'S POV)"A fair!!" She exclaimed, eyes widened as she peeked through the window at the huge iron gates."More like a VIP preview night." I corrected. My attention was on my phone, where I was going through my itinerary."Even better! Because now we have a lot of rides to ourselves." She was craning her neck even harder now. "And I think I see older people.""Probably. Our parents were the ones invited." I couldn't keep my eyes on my phone for long, I had to steal a glance again and I was disappointed because I couldn't see those sparkling blue eyes but at least she wasn't so sad anymore. Her excitement was palpable, it has been since we got here and she realized that we are here for the exclusive launch of a fair."What are we really waiting for?" She asked, her body almost out of the car.A couple of knocks on the window interrupted my answer."That." I said with a sigh as I slipped my phone in my pocket. "Are you ready?""I've been ready since we got here! I love fairs so much

  • A Bully For A StepBrother.    An Amazing Day.

(KAIRA'S POV)"I'm not a Horton." I said to myself, my teeth gnashed against each other. But the person who stared back at me in the mirror looked very much like a Horton.A beauty team had just finished with me. Light makeup, perfect hair pinned up, a beautiful beige crop top over the classiest pair of high-waisted denim jeans I had ever seen.Slade was right, we didn't go home. We went to a hotel and I got ready in a beautiful suite that looked like it belonged to a princess.I couldn't deny that I looked pretty but everything wasn't sitting right with me."I'm not a Horton." I repeated to my reflection in the mirror.I kept my eyes shut trying to suppress the emotions that were building inside. Then I grabbed the little pink purse and stepped out of the door. But Slade was standing right there so I doubled back and missed my steps because of the heeled glass slippers I was wearing.I was reaching for the doorknob, to grasp it for a little stability but I missed it and would have cr

  • A Bully For A StepBrother.    Not Over, Pauper!

(KAIRA’S POV)I have lived in PineCrest for thirteen years, which means I have also had the privilege (thanks to Tom Horton) of going from PineCrest elementary to PineCrest high school. I kid you not, despite all these years I have made no friends. Literally, none at all. The most attention I get is when I am getting bullied or being laughed at. The only people I am cordial is some of my teachers, and of course Mrs Skye, our ink club matron. That being established, you know how antisocial I am in school so I kid you not when I say that I have no idea who the angry but pretty brunette, holding my phone is.Her almond eyes looked me over like my presence deeply disgusted her.“Who the hell do you think you are?” She greeted.I frowned, unsure of what to say. She leaned forward. “It doesn’t matter that your cheap mother found her way in to the Horton family, you will always be a charity case.” She laughed. “Slade already made it clear to us all.”My heart sank. The fact that she invol

(KAIRA'S POV)Slade put me down immediately and draped his jacket over my shoulder. (KAIRA'S POV)Slade was torturing me with silence. • A Bully For A StepBrother.    The Beautiful Nightmare.

(KAIRA'S POV) The large iron gates opened, and I felt the familiar weight of panic settle behind my ribs. (KAIRA'S POV) "Mr. Horton, your project partner is… Miss Jin." Our English teacher, Mrs. Reed, announced. My stomach sank, and a heavy weight transferred to my chest. Of all the people in PineCrest High, it had to be Slade Horton. Football captain. Sole hair of Horton Empire. Most popular an
