Silence swallowed the underground library.

No one moved.

No one breathed.

Kai stood like a statue, his broad shoulders blocking Lila from everyone's view.

His icy blue eyes remained fixed on the bloodied warrior.

"...Repeat what he said."

The warrior swallowed.

"The Crimson Fang Alpha said..." His voice trembled. "'Tell Princess Lila... her fiancé has come to take her home.'"

The room erupted.

"Fiancé?"

"Princess?"

"How is that possible?"

Lila felt as though the floor had disappeared beneath her feet.

"I... I've never been engaged."

Kai didn't answer.

He was staring at the wall.

Not because he was distracted...

Because he was trying not to lose control.

His wolf was clawing at his mind.

*Fiancé?*

*Another male claims our mate?*

*Kill him.*

*Not yet.*

*Now.*

*Control yourself.*

His fists clenched so tightly that the bones cracked.

Mason quietly stepped beside him.

"Kai..."

"I know."

"No, you don't."

Mason lowered his voice.

"Your eyes."

Kai looked up.

The room fell silent again.

Both of his eyes had turned completely gold.

Every wolf instinctively lowered their heads.

Their Alpha was furious.

Lila slowly stepped around him.

"Kai..."

He didn't respond.

She frowned.

"Kai?"

Still nothing.

She reached for his arm.

The instant her fingers brushed his sleeve—

His entire body froze.

The raging wolf inside him... became still.

His golden eyes slowly faded back to blue.

He looked down at her hand resting lightly on his arm.

"So..." Lila said softly. "...this calms you?"

Kai didn't know how to answer.

It did.

Her touch quieted every violent instinct inside him.

His wolf sighed contentedly.

*Mate fixed it.*

Kai silently cursed the Moon Goddess.

Mason watched the exchange with wide eyes.

"I've known Kai for fifteen years..."

Another warrior whispered, "Has anyone ever touched him like that?"

Mason shook his head.

"No."

"Not even his own pack."

Kai had always hated unnecessary contact.

No handshakes.

No hugs.

No shoulder pats after victories.

Nothing.

The only exception...

Was standing beside him without fear.

Lila didn't know that.

She simply removed her hand.

"There."

"Better?"

Kai gave one short nod.

"...Yes."

She smiled.

"Good."

His heartbeat betrayed him.

Before anyone could speak again—

BOOM!

The entire underground headquarters shook violently.

Dust rained from the ceiling.

A second explosion followed.

Then a third.

Mason grabbed the communication radio.

"Report!"

Static crackled.

Then—

"They've breached the west tunnel!"

Another voice screamed.

"We've lost the first defense line!"

Kai's calm returned instantly.

"Evacuate the civilians."

"Seal the eastern gate."

"No one fights alone."

His warriors scattered without hesitation.

Lila watched in amazement.

He didn't shout.

He didn't panic.

He simply gave orders.

And everyone obeyed.

Kai turned toward her.

"You're coming with me."

She folded her arms.

"Is that an order?"

"Yes."

"I don't like being ordered around."

"I noticed."

"I'm capable of making my own decisions."

"I noticed that too."

"You always have to get the last word?"

"...Usually."

She sighed dramatically.

"You're impossible."

"So I've been told."

Despite herself...

She smiled.

Kai looked away before she noticed the tiny twitch at the corner of his lips.

As they hurried through the tunnels, alarms echoed all around them.

The university above had descended into chaos.

Students ran in every direction.

Most had no idea monsters were hiding among them.

Kai suddenly stopped.

His nose twitched.

Blood.

Not wolf blood.

Human blood.

His expression darkened.

"They're already inside the campus."

Lila's stomach twisted.

"Students..."

"They're in danger."

Without another thought, she ran toward the staircase.

"Lila!"

Kai reached for her—

She burst onto the campus.

Students screamed.

Cars burned near the parking lot.

Smoke filled the air.

A massive black wolf chased two terrified freshmen across the lawn.

Without thinking, Lila grabbed a metal trash can and hurled it.

CLANG!

It slammed into the wolf's side.

The beast turned slowly.

Its crimson eyes settled on her.

"Oh..." Lila whispered. "...that was probably a bad idea."

The wolf snarled.

Then charged.

"LILA!"

Kai exploded out of the stairwell.

Time seemed to slow.

The wolf leaped.

Lila froze.

She couldn't move.

She couldn't breathe.

Just before the jaws reached her—

Kai threw himself between them.

The wolf's fangs sank deep into his shoulder.

Blood splattered across the grass.

Students screamed.

Lila's eyes widened in horror.

"KAI!"

For a heartbeat...

Everything was silent.

Then...

Kai slowly lifted his head.

His blue eyes burned gold.

The air around him trembled with Alpha power.

The wolf that had bitten him suddenly whimpered.

It tried to back away.

Too late.

Kai grabbed it by the throat with one hand.

His voice was low.

Cold.

Deadly.

"You made one mistake."

The wolf struggled helplessly.

"You forgot..."

Kai tightened his grip.

"...she belongs under my protection."

CRACK!

The wolf collapsed unconscious at his feet.

Every enemy wolf nearby stopped fighting.

Fear spread through their ranks.

The Alpha of Blackridge had entered the battlefield.

Kai turned toward Lila.

Blood poured from his shoulder.

His face remained unreadable.

"Are you hurt?"

Lila stared at him.

"You jumped in front of me..."

"You could've died!"

His answer came without hesitation.

"I'd do it again."

Her heart skipped.

Before she could respond—

A slow clap echoed across the battlefield.

Everyone turned.

Standing atop the university's stone clock tower was a tall man dressed entirely in white.

His silver cloak billowed in the wind.

He looked impossibly handsome.

Ancient.

Powerful.

His emerald eyes never left Lila.

Finally, he smiled.

"My princess..."

He bowed elegantly.

"I've come to fulfill the promise your father made before you were born."

Kai's entire body went rigid.

The stranger's next words struck harder than any attack.

"You were never meant to be mated to Kai Hunter."

"You were promised..."

"...to me."
