MARIS
"I heard the COO is going to be present for today's presentation."
“The COO? Bakit pupunta siya rito?” “He’s present at every presentation. Kinailangan kong maging magaling today. Santos & Villareal Architects was counting on me. “Maris.” “Naghahanda na ako for the past three weeks.” May mas importante pa akong isipin. For one terrifying second, hindi ako nakagalaw. Almost the same pa rin as I remembered, except then nakaupo na siya sa head of the table, wearing a sharp clean suit, and surrounded by executives who looked at him with pure respect, no room for doubt. Yung tingin niya locked pa rin sakin, and something unreadable passed over his face. Kinilala niya ako. Napakirot ang tiyan ko. Pinilit kong ibaling ang tingin bago pa may makapansin. Tapos nakita ko si Miguel umupo a few seats away from him. Lalong bumigat yung feeling. Nasa room ako with Enzo… and my boyfriend. Naghahanap ng something to do, inayos ko yung notebook and papers in front of me, nilagay yung pen on top, then kinuha ulit and inilagay sa gilid. Kahit yung lalaking katabi niya yumuko and whispered something serious to him, yung cold blue eyes locked pa rin sakin. “This development is a priority for the Montenegro Holdings,” sabi ni Enzo, and his voice sent a bad kind of shiver through me. “Maglalaan tayo ng maraming oras at pondo rito. Ang team from whichever architectural company we end up with will work on this building throughout the entire project.” May weird feeling nung nagtagpo ulit yung tingin namin. One arm crossed over his chest, the other elbow resting on it, slowly rubbing his lower lip with his thumb back and forth. Yung lips na super familiar pa rin. Agad akong umiwas ng tingin. “You’ve added quite a few sustainability features that weren’t part of the original plan. Kaninong idea ang pagsama sa mga ‘to?” “Sustainability is Maris’ area of expertise. Siya ang—” “Is that so?” putol ni Enzo. Umupo ako nang restless while he looked at his notes before looking back at me with that questioning stare. “Can you explain why you made some of these choices, Maris? Magpapataas ito ng cost ng project.” Bakit ganyan yung tono niya? Blank for a second, pero mabilis akong nakabawi. “Sustainable hotel architecture might require a larger initial investment, pero alam ko alam niyo rin na better infrastructure means higher return on investment. Aside from things like low-flush toilets, water-saving faucets, and smart showers, yung systems na tinitingnan namin for this project include solar panels, water recovery systems, and HVAC systems that can adjust airflow, heating, and cooling depending on different factors.” Inayos ko yung notes in front of me. “Using your Cebu hotel as case study, yung estimates namin show na yung water recovery system will pay for itself in less than a year. And if we include solar panels in the hotel design, hindi lang siya makakatulong for your LEED Platinum certification, mababawasan din yung electricity consumption by up to fifty percent, and yung investment is expected to pay for itself in six to eight years.” “Interesting.” Sumandal siya sa upuan, eyes still locked on me. “Continue. Before I could say something embarrassing, uminom muna ako ng water. “Opo, of course, Mr. Montenegro. These big investments will completely change how your hotels operate, reduce the environmental impact without sacrificing comfort. Magiging aligned din siya sa future of sustainable design and it will raise your sustainability ratings.” May drop of sweat na dumaloy down my chest from how intense he was staring. “Hotels that invest in sustainable practices usually have higher occupancy rates, happier guests, and higher revenue per room compared to those that don’t. So even if the initial investment looks expensive, confident ako na yung savings will cover the cost within a few years.” “Sige,” sabi niya after a moment, then he turned his attention to Miguel. “I think we’ve heard everything we need from your team. Someone will contact you once we’ve made a decision. Thanks for your time today.” Itinulak niya yung chair paatras and stood up. Inipon ko yung pen, notebook, and papers and tumalikod na para umalis, without daring to look back at him. Habang naglalakad kami papunta sa door, dumampi yung kamay ni Miguel sa back ko, and he leaned down to whisper in my ear. “Ang hirap basahin nung lalaking ‘yon. Wala akong idea kung okay ba ‘to or not.” Yung hard jaw and coldness in his eyes sent real fear straight to my heart. May bad feeling ako na yung “whatever happened between us” that night one month ago was coming back to bite me. And bite me hard.MARISNapa-gasps ako. Of course there won’t be a repeat of that night. After all, once lang naman ako pwedeng mawalan ng virginity. Now that Miguel and I are back together, what would I need you for?”May dark na kumislap sa mata niya, pero itinaas lang niya ang kilay.“Napaniwala ka niyang balikan siya, did he? Or ikaw ang nag-convince with your newfound sexual confidence?”Nagsimulang sumakit ang ulo ko sa base ng bungo, at tinigan ko siya.“Not that it’s any of your business, but nag-apologize si Miguel at nagtanong kung pwedeng subukan ulit.”Walang sinabi si Enzo. Pumasok siya right into my personal space, ibinaba ang ulo hanggang ang mukha niya ay hovering just above mine.
ENZO“Dad’s been arrested...”Biglang lumitaw yung message sa top ng phone ko while I was checking the stocks from the hotel balcony, and as fast as it appeared, bigla rin itong nawala before I could even process it fully.Mabilis kong pinindot yung message from my brother and read it again, just to make sure I wasn’t imagining things.Dad’s been arrested.Agad ko siyang tinawagan, heart already picking up speed.“Anong dahilan?”Agad na pumasok sa isip ko na baka DUI, something reckless but still within the usual range for him.“Insider trading,” sagot ni Alejandro, voice tight.“Ano ba talaga?”Laging mapangahas si Dad. Pero insider trading? Ibang level na ‘yon ng breaking the law, the kind that doesn’t just hurt him but drags everyone else down with him.“Nakausap ko na yung lawyers. Nakakulong siya and he’ll stay there until the bail hearing tomorrow. Pero according to the lawyers, malamang hindi ito ma-approve, because they’ll treat him as a flight risk.”“Ginawa ba talaga niya?”
MARIS“Nakuha natin! Nakuha natin yung project ng Montenegro Holdings!”Yung sigaw ni Miguel ang gumising sa akin agad-agad kinabukasan.“Talaga ba?”At the same time, kinabahan ako nang husto. Hindi nasayang yung lahat ng paghihirap namin these past weeks. I would be able to participate in designing something that would be seen in major cities across the Philippines.Pero noong sandaling iyon, kumirot yung tiyan ko at the thought of working with Enzo for a long time.“Ihahanda na nila yung space for us this Monday, so doon na tayo magsisimula. May sarili akong office, pero ikaw and the rest of the team would be on the main floor.”“Sige.”“Nag-utos din si Enzo na makipagkita sa each of us privately this Monday.”Kumirot na naman yung tiyan ko, harder this time.“Pribado… para saan?”“Wala akong idea. Sagutin mo lang yung questions niya, sabihin mong you were looking forward to working with him, and ‘yun na lang.”Di
ENZO“Not a chance in hell,” ang mariing sagot konung imungkahi ni Alejandro na ibigay yung project sa Santos & Villareal Architects.“Hindi mo nagustuhan yung proposal?” tanong ni Matteo while he plopped down hard on one of the sofas in the office.“Narinig ko na napakaganda rin naman ito.” Hinaplos ni Alejandro yung document with his finger. “At based on what I’m seeing here, sila mismo yung kailangan natin.”Yung part na “sila mismo yung kailangan natin” nagpaalala sa akin nung pumasok si Maris sa meeting room earlier. The second I recognized her, bumalik sa isip ko yung night sa hotel room ko—kung paano gumalaw yung katawan niya under me, and yung sounds of pleasure niya that almost sounded surprised when I first started moving inside her.Pinilit kong alisin yung memory na ‘yon while I leaned back on the soft leather chair and crossed my ankles, trying to stay focused.“May ilang magagandang proposals naman.”“Pero wala ni isa man sa kanila ang kasinghusay ng Santos & Villareal A
MARISOne month ago pa lang…“You’re a pathetic, cowardly piece of shit, and I hate that I ever believed a word you said. You don’t deserve me, and you sure as hell don’t deserve another second of my time. Go find whatever screwed-up woman you think isn’t ‘too independent,’ because I’m done being the idiot who loved you, you snaky son of a bitch.”Hindi naman talaga ako ganito kapag lasing. Wala na akong energy left para harapin pa yung ibang gulo from other people.“Uy, another drink naman. Empty na ’to eh.” Mukhang super rich and w
