“So, where are you from?” I asked him as soon as I looked away from him.
“I’m from Cape Town, I think”, he said in a tone that implied that there was a lot more from the answer he gave me. “But that’s a story for another day because it’s a long one.”
I was about to answer him when Jack came around and said, “Kid, we have to move or else your dad will soon call you to find out where we are.”
“Yeah sure, let’s go.” I turned to Ashton and smiled apologetically that our conversation was cut short. He nodded in understanding and flashed a brilliant smile at me. I shuddered and looked away, dazzled. He saw that and he laughed in his mind.
“I’ll see you tomorrow at school, then”, he said that and then to Jack, “I’ll see you some other time, champ.”
“Yeah, you can count on it. Bye, kid”, Jack said.
It was getting a bit dark and chilly. Ashton jumped out of the car and he ran, no, he super-sped to his home. I stared with my mouth open at that because it was my first time seeing it.
“Close your mouth, kid, or you’re gonna start drooling”, Jack teased.
I recovered and said, “Shut up. Don’t tell me you’ve seen that before because I haven’t.”
“Whether I have or haven’t seen it before, it doesn’t amaze me that much. You seem to forget that I’m just a computer”, he said that with a laugh.
I joined him in laughing and drove out of the car park towards home. We listened to some music on our way there. I put in my One Direction CD in the player and the volume a bit high. We sang along to some of the songs together and laughed a lot until we got home.
By the time I had parked the car into the garage and heading into the house, my dad was calling me on my cell. I ignored it and appeared in the kitchen before he cut the line. When he saw us, he put his phone down and smiled at me.
“Well, I guess it’s time to go back to the wall”, Jack said with a sigh. “Thanks for the ride, kid. Sure had some fun.”
“Anytime, bud. See ya.”
He disappeared from the tab and appeared on the wall in the kitchen. I smiled at him and headed to the counter where my dad and Jay were seated.
“So, did you guys have fun?” my dad asked.
“Yep, the best time even though it was short.”
“And even more fun when Ashton joined us!” Jack added with a huge smile.
“Ashton?” my dad raised a questioning eyebrow.
“Thanks, Jack”, I said with a groan and turned to my dad. “Yeah, I’ll tell you about it over dinner. Let me get my things to my room and then I’ll be right back.”
I went up to my room and put my book on the bed along with the wallet. I’d attend to it after dinner.
I went down to the kitchen and set the dinner table. The maid had left dinner in the oven so all I had to do was set the table and put the food on the table for everyone to help themselves.
My dad and Jay joined me at the table when I was done and we sat down for dinner.
“So, where did you guys go to?” my dad asked after swallowing several mouthfuls of his dinner.
“We went to Greenstone Mall. I showed Jack around a few places including the cinema. We then went to a bookshop and I purchased one book for myself.”
“Oh, that sounds like quite an adventure for one day”, Jay commented.
I smiled up at him and said, “Yeah it was but it wasn’t a big one. We didn’t do anything particularly adventurous.”
“So, where does Ashton come in?” my dad asked.
“Well, we kind of bumped into him by the cinema. So we talked for some time before I got into the car and came home.”
“Oh, ok. Now that’s cleared up”, he said with a ‘phew’ in his mind.
We ate quietly for some time and then I blurted out the little details that Ashton had told me.
“He told me he’s from Cape Town and that he became bionic when he was seven.”
At first, they acted like I hadn’t said anything significant.
“Ok, and?” my dad asked.
“Well, the boy in the missing people’s website was around six or seven years old. I didn’t call to confirm where the boy is from but I can’t help but wonder if it’s him.”
Both of them, Jay and my dad, laid down their forks with a sound. I didn’t look up to see their expressions but I could see it from their minds. My dad was taken aback with what I had said and Jay was confused because he had no idea what I was going on about.
“Will somebody please explain to me what we’re talking about here?” Jay said.
I ran through the whole thing informing Jay about what I was telling my dad about. The moment I finished explaining the whole thing to him, his mind started tracing back to Cape Town’s news.
“I’ve heard about the disappearance of children, some from Cape Town and some from different parts of the world”, Jay explained to us. “Some of those kids were found dead but some were not found at all. So the cases were closed since they couldn’t find those kids anywhere. So, what you’re saying is that this Ashton-kid is the one from the website you saw?” he asked.
“I couldn’t be sure because of some differences that I noticed. First, the kid has stormy grey eyes but Ashton has onyx eyes. Second, the kid’s name is Joel Ashton McKenzie but Ashton’s full name is Ashton Turner.”
“Hmmm, now that is one mystery that would take some time before it is solved. All I can say is, find out more about the guy before we can take some action of calling the number on the website”, my dad said in a quiet voice that showed that he was thinking deeply.
I didn’t intrude on his thoughts but I did pick up that he was thinking more on the issue and was trying to find a solution so as to put my mind at ease. Jay was also thinking about the mystery but he was getting nowhere because there was less information concerning the background of the guy. Jay seemed to be knowing the kid but not that much because he also had a relative that went missing. He couldn’t be sure it was him but he seemed to be sure about the McKenzie name. I decided not to intrude in his thoughts anymore.
So we finished our dinner and I put the dishes in the dishwasher before heading upstairs. Jay and my dad went to the living room to watch some football game that was playing. I didn’t join them because I’m not a football fan. I went up to my room to attend to my homework and do a little bit of studying.
I jumped onto my bed and read the back of the book I had bought. The book sounded really intriguing but I’d read it later on after my homework was done.
School was dragging for the rest of the week as I was still planning on going to the mall with Jack during the weekend. I invited Mya and Brendan to come with me but they said that they already had plans. I wanted them to come so that they would meet Jack so I didn’t tell them about him. When the time came, they would get to know him.On that Friday, during lunch time, Ashton called me, mentally. I didn’t look up but he knew that I heard him.Lina, he called.Yeah? I answered. There’s something I want to ask you, but I’d rather do it verbally, he said. What is it?Can’t say. Meet me by the parking lot in two minutes, in my car, he ended.
That night, I watched movies on my laptop until the wee hours of the morning. I told Jack about the addition to our outing to the mall. He was pretty much excited that Ashton was joining us. I told my dad and Jay about my plans for the weekend and who I was going to be with. They didn’t say much about it, I knew that they would be working all day in the lab and I’d be out of their hair.I slept for a few hours and woke up midmorning. I tidied up my room and then went downstairs to help myself to some breakfast. I wanted something to make me feel energetic since I was to practise earlier that day, before going out. I found my dad in the kitchen.“You slept late last night”, he commented.“Umm, yeah. I was just watching some movies and I got too carried away with them. So I slept around two in the morning.”“Honey, you know that you need enough rest or else you&
I drove off in the direction of the Mall, with Jack. It wasn’t a very long drive but I wasn’t in a rush so I drove under the speed limit. We talked about my school with Jack, I was telling him about how it was. I described everything clearly for him so that he could try to picture it. He asked about my friends and I told him about Mya and Brendan. “Kid, don’t tell me that you only have two friends at school”, he said with a disapproving tone. “I do have two friends only. Some students tolerate me but some really look at me like I’m some kind of disturbing bug, although I’ve never talked to them. That’s one of the reasons why I always wear hoodies and keep my head down.” He considered that and took a moment going over what I had just said. I didn’t know what he was thinking about, it was annoying that I couldn’t read his mind. For all I knew, I don’t think he had a mind since he was just a computer. He was way better than a normal computer because he could rea
We watched the movie while playing around with the snacks that we had bought, and also Jack making us laugh about some of the scenes in the movie he made to be pretty funny. It was a great movie and we watched it till the very end of it. I enjoyed every moment of it, even Ashton seemed to have enjoyed it too. I had no doubt that Jack had a great time as well.We went out of the cinema when the movie had reached its end. We were quiet for a while and we looked for a quiet restaurant that we would sit in. We found one around the corner, almost on your way out in the direction of the parking lots. All the way from the cinema to that restaurant, I was feeling uneasy. I felt like we were being followed but I couldn’t be sure by who. I kept on looking behind my back to see who was following us but I just saw a lot of people walking about their business, I didn’t see anyone who seemed out of place there. When we got to the restaurant, I felt better and relaxed.
Ashton started asking questions about my family."So you live with your dad and uncle?" he asked.Even though Jay wasn't technically my uncle, this was the best way to inrtroduce him to people around me. "Yes, I live with both.""May i ask what happened to your mom?" he inquired further.Truthfully, i hated answering those questions concerning family, but I made an exception of giving answers to him."She died while giving birth to me", i paused. "I never got to know her."He kept quiet as he felt the gravity of pain in the information I had offered him."I'm sorry", he said after a moment of silence."It's okay. It was a long time ago and it doesn't as much anymore. I have my dad who tries by all means to fill whatever void is there and I'm grateful for that."I smiled to assure him that I meant what I had just said. He let it go and smiled back at me.I then asked "What about you?"He hesitate
I dashed downstairs and found Maggie still in the kitchen with Jack. They noticed me but paid me no attention. I decided to use that opportunity of them not looking at me and dashed to the hidden elevators to the lab. I got to the lab and found my dad and Jay finishing off what they were installing in the capsule. They paid me no attention as well so I used that opportunity to get to the lab computer. Ever since we found out how dangerous this situation was, I had decided to use the computer in the lab because it was the only one around the house that was so deeply encrypted that it was highly impossible to trace its location and activity.I went straight to the website and got the number that I wanted. I took the phone situated next to the computer and dialled the number on the screen of the computer. It rang twice and a female voice answered.“Hello”, the voice said.“Hi, is this the McKenzie residence?” I asked. My question brou
He was kind of whispering when he said that. I wondered what was going on but I didn’t question it immediately.“Hey, What’s up?” I asked.“So sorry for calling you so late. I just wanted to say goodnight”, he was still whispering. That made me question him about his safety.“Are you ok? Why are you whispering?”“Well, it turns out you were right when we were at the mall”, he said.“About what?”“We were being followed. They saw me with you, Kyle’s people. So now, they saw you and are probably going to try tracking you down. They bugged my phone in case I contacted you. So I went out of the house and I’m calling you with Kelsey’s phone”, he said.“So, what are you going to do? What am I supposed to do? Why would they want anything to do with me? I mean, it's not like they know anything about me.”“I don
I went up to my room and changed to my training suit. It was a suit that was compatible with the powers I possessed. When I was about to exit, the phone rang in my room. I went back to answer it.“Hello”, I said.“Hey, it’s me. Caught you at a bad time?” Ashton spoke over the phone.“I was about to go for my training session. You're okay?”“Kelsey put me in a hide-out place that she said was safe from Kyle. I don’t know why I have to hide from him, he’s my adopted father after all. Kelsey said there’s something really important that she’ll tell me later on tonight because she had to go to work. She only told me that Kyle’s not the person that I’ve always known him to be and then took off. Lina, I think I’m in more danger than I thought myself to be. I just feel that way”, he said.I heard fright from his voice. I started getting anxious again, the feelin
