CAROLINE

A Few Hours Earlier

I stared at Alex, annoyance flickering across my eyes. "Why the hell didn't you think it important to notify me that you and Essence have gotten divorced?

Alex sighed, like the victim he always pretends to be. “It didn't occur to me, okay? Things have just been so chaotic since what happened with Vesper. My mind hasn’t exactly been clear. Besides... I don’t believe my relationship with Essence is really over. This is just temporary. A misunderstanding.”

I blinked. “She’s married to someone else, Alex.”

He actually had the nerve to smile a little. “Yeah. It seems that way. But trust me, it’s not what you think.”

And as if on cue, out waltzed Remi Vanguard from his room like a bad decision in heels. She didn’t even look at me. Just tossed her hair, told Alex she was heading out, and left.

I snorted. “You’ve got to be kidding. She’s still here? You’re still letting that.....” I stopped myself. “You know what? Maybe I should be happy for you. You

  • A Whole New World   CHAPTER ONE HUNDRED AND TWO

ASHER When mummy walked into my room, I suspected that something was wrong. She didn’t smile. She didn’t joke. She just walked in quietly and sat down beside me on the bed like someone who had made up her mind. I slowly sat up and tried to act innocent. "Mummy, what’s the matter? Did I do something wrong?" She turned to face me, and her voice was calm. That kind of calm that scared me more than shouting. "Asher," she said, "I want you to tell me the truth. What really happened between you and Danny earlier?" I blinked fast, trying to read her face. Did she know? I swallowed and said, "Mum, I already told you. Danny poured water on me and pushed me. He... he’s jealous of me because you gave birth to me and not him." "Is that so?" she asked, and her voice had an edge now — like she already knew I was lying. I nodded slowly, hoping she’d just believe me like before. But then she pulled out her phone and turned the screen toward me. My stomach dropped. I stared at th

ESSENCE I turned back to Asher. His bottom lip was still trembling. “I know that wasn’t nice,” I said softly. “But he’s sorry. Please forgive him.” Asher gave a long sigh and looked away before whispering, “I forgive you.” I breathed out. “Danny, help him up.” Danny hesitated but then stretched out his hand. Asher stared at it for a moment before grabbing it. Danny pulled him up, a little clumsily, but the effort was there. “Now hug,” I said. They gave each other the kind of hug only boys give—awkward, stiff, but still meaningful. I stood beside them. “Listen,” I said, “this is your home. Both of you. And I know it’s going to take time to adjust, but I need you to learn how to love each other. You’re brothers now. That’s a forever thing. You don’t get to quit on forever.” Danny nodded. “I understand, Mum.” I pulled them both into a hug, ruffled their hair, and gave myself a mental note to bribe them later with ice cream and video games. As I left the room, I did

ESSENCE The next morning at work, I couldn't wait to spill everything. As soon as Sky and Hailey walked into the office, I dragged them into the meeting room and shut the door like we were plotting a coup. “Okay, so… you guys remember that contract we got? The one that made us scream like goats in labour?” Sky raised a brow. “You mean the 500-million-naira design deal from Anderson Corporation? Yes, Essence. I remember. I have not been able to sleep since I saw the zeros.” I nodded, pacing as I spoke. “Well, Lucian said I shouldn’t sign it yet. He said Jason’s uncle, Thompson might be involved. Apparently, he’s the biggest shareholder in that company. He wants to investigate first.” Sky groaned. “Ugh, Essence. I get that your husband is fine, rich, and all-knowing. But we have lawyers too. Our company has lawyers. If there’s anything shady in the contract, they’ll flag it.” I folded my arms. “He’s not saying we shouldn’t sign it forever. Just that we hold off for one week

ESSENCE I must have zoned out for a while because suddenly, I noticed both Sky and Hailey staring at me like I’d started levitating in my seat. “Hey,” Hailey said, narrowing her eyes. “Where’d you go? You’ve been quiet for the last two minutes. What’s on your mind?” I blinked, smiled a little. “Nothing bad,” I said. “I’m just thinking… too many good things are happening to me at once. It’s almost scary.” They both looked at me like I’d grown another head. “I mean,” I continued, “I finally sorted out the whole mess with Asher. I get to have him three times a month now—every weekend. Danny’s flying in today. Lucian’s still in my life and somehow not tired of me.” I paused, chewing on the edge of my thoughts. “And I don’t know,” I admitted, “sometimes I just sit with all this goodness, and I start wondering... do I even deserve it?” Hailey reached over and squeezed my hand gently. “Of course you do,” she said. “What are you talking about? Essence, you—more than anyone I

  • A Whole New World   CHAPTER NINETY EIGHT

ESSENCE I stared at Sky like she had just announced she was quitting her job to become a nun. “You what?” I blinked hard. “You dropped the charges? Against that girl?” Sky was leaning on the edge of my desk, arms folded, eyes low, and lips tight in that way she always did when she knew she was about to get dragged. But this time, she didn’t even try to defend herself. “Sky,” I said, leaning back in my chair, arms crossed, voice sharp with disbelief. “She attacked you. At your own company. In front of your staff. While cameras were rolling. And now people online are calling you everything but a child of God. Why—why on earth would you let her go?” Nothing. Not a word. I turned to Hailey, who was watching the whole thing like she’d tuned in for a live season finale. Her eyes widened, and she mouthed, “Is she okay?” I shrugged. “Well,” I said finally, “this is definitely a first. I never thought I’d live to see the day Sky had no comeback. No savage clapback. No middle f

SKY I laughed. Not the kind of laugh that bubbles up from joy or amusement. This one was sharp and bitter. It scraped my throat on the way out. “You actually expect me to believe that?” I said, shaking my head. “Wait, let me guess. Are you still hanging around because you think I’m hiding the other fifty percent of your dad’s property somewhere under my bed? Hoping maybe I’ll slip and hand it to you in my sleep?” He opened his mouth, but I didn’t give him the chance. “I told you already—I gave it up. Every damn thing. To charity. I have the paperwork to prove it. So if that’s what you came here for, you’re wasting your time.” “I know,” he said softly. “I believe you. I trust you, Sky.” The words dropped quietly between us, like a pebble tossed into a still lake. I didn’t believe him. He rubbed the back of his neck, then looked up at me. “I won’t sit here and pretend like my relationship with my dad was perfect. It wasn’t. But I do regret it. I regret not being there w
