Chapter 1 Chaos: The day I lost everything…

“Amber!!! Get your ass out of that bed!” Vee said, dragging my legs.

I groaned, dragging a pillow over my head.

“Your job is the only thing keeping us afloat for now, and you are not about to lose that job because of your reckless sleeping habit,” Vee, my best friend shouted.

Okay, maybe she had a point.

Yawning, I sluggishly got out of bed and shot her an annoyed look.

Yes, I have a bad sleeping habit, but she was being dramatic.

“Alright, Vee, I’m awake. I’ll just freshen up,” I mumbled.

“Better,” she said.

I could still hear her voice from outside my room, and I just shook my head.

One minute she’s my best friend, and the next she acts like a mother who would whoop my ass if I misbehaved. If Vee didn’t drag me out of bed every morning, I’d probably be homeless by now.

“Vee, I’m leaving. Take care of yourself!” I called as I hurried out of the house.

I got to the office, hoping the supervisor wasn’t there yet then I saw people gathered at the notice board.

Wondering what was going on, I moved closer and saw Sarah, one of the best employees moving out with a packed up bag. She saw me and gave me a sad smile.

Walking past her and wondering what that was about, I saw the board.

LIST OF LAID OFF EMPLOYEES.

My heart started thumping so hard, I thought it would jump out of my chest, hands trembling.

I scanned the list and there it was.

Amber Peters. Number five.

“Why”? I asked no one in particular. I could feel my eyes become blurry, I wrapped my arms around me as if trying to comfort myself.

“I heard the company is running low on funds. They can’t keep everyone anymore,” John, one of the laid-off employees, said quietly.

“It doesn’t make sense. There has to be something that can be done, right?”

Without waiting for an answer, I stormed toward the manager’s office.

“Miss Amber Peters, don’t you know how to knock?” he said.

“I’m sorry, sir. I just saw the list. Why am I on it?” My voice came out tighter than I intended.

“I’ve devoted everything to this office. You can’t just lay me off like that.”

“So because you were devoted to the job you were being paid for, does that mean you co-own the company?” he snapped.

“You only did your job, Amber. Stop whining. You’re not the only one we laid off, there are other people who were better than you too.

“Sir… is that all you have to say?”

“Well…there might be another way to keep your job.” His eyes dragged over me slowly.

“If you’re willing to cooperate, of course.”

I froze.

“What do you mean?”

He stepped closer.

“You’re a smart girl, Amber,” his voice dropped.

“I’m sure you understand how these things work.”

My stomach churned.

His hand lifted to her face, too close.

“Spend some time with me, and your name disappears from that list.”

“You disgusting pig.” I shoved him away. “Even if you were the last man on earth, I would never touch you.” And yes, keep your damn job. I don’t need it, asswipe.”

I slammed the door behind me.

I sounded brave but I knew if I spent any more second here, I would break down.

I grabbed my things and left without saying goodbye to anyone.

I didn’t want to go home plus I didn’t have any friends except Vee of course.

Calling Vee wasn’t an option, she would be at her interview by now.

“I could really use a hug right now and if anybody could help me, it would be my boyfriend, Aaron.

So I headed to his place.

*****

Loud music blasted from inside his apartment. Not wanting to waste time outside, I used my key.

The moment I stepped in, the smell of weed hit me. Bottles of alcohol were scattered everywhere.

Then I heard it. Voices from the bedroom.

My stomach dropped.

“Aaron…?”

I pushed the door open. I froze.

I saw a woman with her legs raised up while my boyfriend rammed into her with much gusto. Even with the music so high, her moans were all I could hear.

“What the fuck, Aaron?” I shouted.

They both turned. He looked shocked for a second… then annoyed.

“What are you doing here? Aren’t you supposed to be at work?”

I blinked. “Is that what you should be saying to me?”

“You should have called first, Amber. Then you wouldn’t have seen this.” He said

“Called first? I laughed hollowly.

“Should I have asked permission to see my boyfriend cheating?

You don’t even have the dignity to apologize, but you’re trying to blame me?” I queried.

“Don’t start, Amber. Stop overreacting and try to understand where I’m coming from.”

It was bad enough that I caught him in this position but he wasn’t even moving. The woman stared at me with a smirk on her face, she was enjoying this.

I blinked again. “Understand what?”

“You pushed me to do this”

"I pushed you? We could’ve talked about whatever this is, Aaron.”

He looked at me, and for the first time, I couldn’t read his expression.

Thankfully he had the decency to cover himself although I believed the only reason he untangled himself from the woman was because I had ruined the mood.

“Amber, just go. I’ll check on you later. I have a guest.”

“What do you mean? Are you chasing me out?”

“I’m done with whatever this is. I can’t continue anymore, so just leave. You’re making my guest uncomfortable, I don’t appreciate that.”

“I won’t leave, I’m going nowh…”

The words died in my throat as he suddenly appeared in front of me and shoved me out of his apartment.

I stumbled outside, the music fading behind me. The night air was cold but it couldn’t cool the fire in my chest.

I was so stunned at his behavior that I could only crouch down to cry my heart out.

Two years.

Late-night calls, promises, plans that suddenly meant nothing.

And just like that… it was over.

All for what, sex.

When things got rough, I stayed, even when Vee had repeatedly warned me. I didn’t listen. I was in love or so I thought.

And now… this.

I laughed.

The sound echoed down the road, hollow and strange.

I was jobless, probably homeless soon, and my boyfriend, gone.

I stumbled to the nearest bench, hugging my knees to my chest. The world felt impossibly loud, the music from Aaron’s apartment, the distant sirens, the honking cars, all mocking me.

“Great… just great,” I whispered to the empty street.

My voice cracked.

“What a day.”

I felt something vibrating in my pocket and realized it was my phone. Looking at my screen, I could see several missed calls from Vee which I had missed because of that scumbag.

I immediately picked the call and her angry voice came from the other side of the phone.

“Why do you have a phone when you don’t use it?”

Vee screamed.

“I’m sorry Vee, I just had a lot.”

Well, hurry up! There’s a job offer for you.

  • A night with my boss   CHAPTER 23: “Fragments”

Adrian’s POVThe doctor adjusted his glasses as he examined Amber once more. A small flashlight moved across her eyes before he finally stepped back.“Her vitals are stable.”I sighed out in relief as I strode towards her side. “But…”I stopped in my tracks and turned towards him“The headache she experienced wasn’t unusual.”I furrowed my brows in confusion.“What do you mean?”He closed his notebook.“When patients with selective retrograde amnesia encounter something emotionally familiar, their brains sometimes try to reconnect those memories.”“So, are you saying she remembered something?”“Perhaps, it could’ve been a memory or it could’ve been a feeling.”I rubbed my temple in frustration “And if it happens again?”He looked directly at me.“I know you want her memories back as soon as possible, Mr. Volkov, but recovering too much too quickly can overwhelm the brain.”“So what do I do?”“Nothing, don’t force it.” He smiled faintly. After the doctor left, I remained standing out

  • A night with my boss   CHAPTER 22: “Echoes”

Adrian’s POVThe doctor’s office smelled strongly of antiseptic, but somehow it couldn’t drown out the thoughts racing through my head. I hadn’t taken my eyes off Amber since she’d opened them. She remembered Vee. She remembered her childhood. She even remembered her university days. But me? I was a complete stranger. The doctor closed the file in front of him.“Mr. Volkov.”I looked up with concentration. “Your wife has selective retrograde amnesia.”“What does that even mean?”The doctor folded his hands together.“Traumatic events affect everyone differently. Sometimes the brain locks away painful memories as a way of protecting itself.”“So what am I supposed to do?”He gave me a look that spelled out pity before answering.“Nothing.”I frowned in disbelief. “Nothing? So that’s it?”“You don’t force memories back. Don’t overwhelm her with photographs, stories or reminders. Let her remember at her own pace.”“And if she doesn’t?”“Then you help her create new memories.”I stared

  • A night with my boss   CHAPTER 21: “Forgotten”

Adrian’s POVThe room was silent, the kind of silence that was deafening to the ears, the kind that made it difficult to breathe. The old butler stood in front of me with his head bowed, his hands trembling by his sides. He knew why he was here and damn right, he should be scared. I looked at him for what felt like forever, waiting for him to deny it, to tell me there had been a mistake.Instead, he stayed quiet.“So, it’s been you all along.”I heard myself speak in a tone softer than expected. Maybe because I was still too shocked to believe he could do something like this to me.“You saw me rack my head and grow frustrated every time I tried to find her and yet you didn’t feel pity for me.”He slowly nodded, then muttered “I’m sorry.”I let out a dry laugh. “Sorry? Sorry for what exactly? The betrayal or that you were caught?” “For how long has this been going on?”“…Three weeks.”Three weeks. It started with the threat messages sent to Amber then me. Now it makes sense of how h

  • A night with my boss   CHAPTER 20: “One Step Behind”

Adrian’s POVThe convoy tore through the empty streets, sirens cutting through the silence of the night. I sat in the back seat, my gun resting on my lap while my eyes stayed fixed on the tablet displaying the abandoned warehouse.“Five minutes out, sir,” the driver announced. My mind replayed the call over and over.“It’s coming from inside your old properties list.”Whoever they were, they knew my past. Which meant they either knew me or someone close to me did.“We’re here.”The SUVs came to a halt outside the old warehouse. The building looked exactly how I remembered it, abandoned, forgotten and lifeless.I stepped out first. “Spread out,” I ordered. “Make sure nobody leaves this place.”My men moved immediately. I pushed open the warehouse door, gun raised. The hinges groaned loudly. There were no voices or movement. It was just abandoned crates, broken furniture and years of dust.“Clear!” I heard one of the men shout from upstairs.Another voice echoed from the back.“Nothing h

  • A night with my boss   Chapter 19: “No Way Back”

Adrian’s POV“FIND THAT VAN NOW!”My voice echoed through the room, sharp enough to make everyone get to work immediately. “Plate number, sir?” “Zoom in,” I snapped. The footage was zoomed in, blurry but not useless.“Enhance that frame. I want every digit and every scratch on that vehicle.”My chest felt tight like something was pressing down on it. What was this feeling? Fear? No, I'm supposed to be composed in this situation and not let them see me falling. But this, this was something i never imagined would happen. I watched the screen again and again and I couldn’t help but notice how they rough-handled my woman. The way they grabbed her and the way she struggled to break free. My jaw clenched, whoever did this to her was going to pay and that was my vow.“Sir, we’ve got partial plates,” one of my men said quickly. “Tracking traffic cams now.”“Do it faster.”I ran a hand through my hair, as I paced back and forth the room. This wasn’t random, It was too clean like it w

  • A night with my boss   Chapter 18:”Calm before the storm”

Adrian’s pov Standing outside her room, I kept pacing back and forth not knowing whether to knock or just walk past. Since the last incident, she’s been avoiding me and it’s worse since we didn’t go to work anymore.I could hear the rustling pages of a book, I guess she’s reading a book. I really don’t even know how to go over and invite her for the banquet we would be going for. She made it clear to me that she hated my guts and didn’t want to have anything to do with me but this banquet is a huge deal for me as I get to meet investors too. I knocked on her door twice but got no response and just as I was about to leave, I heard the door creak open. It looked like she had been away for months while she was just here but staying away from me. “I’m sorry to disturb you, I just wanted to give you this.” I said stretching out my hand to give her a box. It contained a gown and jewellery for the banquet tonight. She looked at the box and back at me before muttering some words. “What’s

  • A night with my boss   Chapter 17: “Bait”

Adrian’s POVI watched the footage again and it was clearly Amber’s room. The camera angle was precise and it looked like it was planted more like a device. It didn’t look like it was taken by chance or from outside, it looked like an inside job. Who would come to my house to plant a device or d

  • A night with my boss   Chapter 16: “He’s watching”

Adrian’s POVI didn’t sleep a wink last night, not because of her this time but because of that message.“You really think you’ve won? Let’s see how long she stays yours.”I stood in my study, staring at the screen again like I could figure out who the coward was or the words would somehow change.

  • A night with my boss   Chapter 15: “Certainty”

Amber’s POVI stayed awake all night staring at the ceiling in my room. Sleep wasn’t forthcoming as I relayed the day’s events over and over again.I couldn’t help but think about him and the way he said those words “You’re mine.” Something about it sent a tingling sensation down my spine. The wo

  • A night with my boss   Chapter 14: “Our Problem”

Adrian’s POV I couldn’t sleep. Not because I wasn’t tired but because I kept thinking about her. The way she looked when I walked into that room. She looked lost and shaken, she was trying so hard to hold herself together. I didn’t like it. I didn’t like that some pathetic excuse of a man had tha
