Amber’s pov

I stood in front of the mirror trying to check my outfit for the umpteenth time. This was the first time I would be meeting Adrian’s family and I don’t know why I’m nervous about it.

I guess it’s probably the fact that I have to make it believable to his cousins and uncle who he already has a bad blood with. I was still lost in my thoughts when I heard his voice from outside my door.

“You always look good Amber, you don’t have to beat yourself up about it plus it’s not a big deal” He said.

“You think so? You think they would like me ? I asked worriedly.

“They don’t have to like you, we are just going to introduce you to them, that’s all. If for any reason you feel uncomfortable, tell me.”

There he goes again, making me feel protected and when I long for more, he disappears. Shaking my head and refusing to be delusional once more, I took a deep breath and we left the house together.

****

The house was bigger than I expected. Warm and lively too, nothing like Adrian’s. Voices echoed from the dining area, soft laughter blending with clinking glasses.

“Stay close,” Adrian said quietly beside me.

I glanced at him, that didn’t sound like a command. It sounded like he was worried about something,

not wanting to think about it, I followed suit.

We stepped in together and just like that, all eyes were on me.

“Ah, there she is,” his grandmother said warmly, standing up.

It wasn’t something but she was a familiar face amidst the off looking faces staring at me.

“At least someone likes me,” I whispered under my breath.

“I heard that,” Adrian muttered.

“Good.”

His grandmother walked up to me, holding my hands.

“You look beautiful, my dear.”

“Thank you,” I said softly.

Then another voice.

“Oh, so this is her?”

I turned.

A woman, elegant and sharp-eyed looked me over like I was something to be inspected.

“She’s simple,” she added.

What did she mean? Was it a back handed compliment or an insult ? Whichever way, I decided to not let anyone take me out of character so I just decided to smile at her Instead but Adrian beat me to it.

“Simple or more natural you mean? My wife has never been the makeup type of girl but I love her that way.” He cut in.

He said this looking me straight into my eyes while smiling and I couldn’t decipher if he was just trying to play along or if he was being serious.

That was unexpected, he defended me? This is shocking. I didn’t have time to process it before we were asked to sit.

And of course, I was seated beside him. What else did I expect?

Dinner started smoothly and it was looking like the calm before the storm. Which meant something was coming.

“And what exactly do you do, Amber?” the same woman asked.

It looked like she was the mouthpiece of everyone in the table, more like, she was saying what they were scared of saying.

There it was

I placed my fork down gently.

“I work,” I said simply.

A few quiet chuckles, not the kind ones but the mocking ones.

“For him?” she pressed.

“Yes.”

“How convenient.” She scoffed.

I felt it, the judgement and the sudden assumption.

Before I could respond…..

“She works because she’s capable,” Adrian said.

Calm but enough to pass the message across and I couldn’t help but smile at my husband.

Adrian’s POV

I didn’t plan to speak but I had to. I didn’t like where that conversation was going and more importantlyI didn’t like the way she was being perceived as.

They were looking at her as an opportunist ans someone who seduced her way to that position.

They looked like her like she was trash and they were above her. Heck, she works ten times harder than any of them here except grandma of course.

She might not belong here but that didn’t mean they had to say it to her face, nobody had that right.

The rest of dinner passed in fragments, conversations I barely followed and stared I pretended not to notice.

As we stood to leave, grandmother pulled me aside.

“You handled that well,” she said softly.

“I didn’t do much.”

“Oh you did, I was scared she would run out because of their incessant questions but you handled it so well, I’m proud.”

I didn’t know why that felt like a bigger compliment than it should but if anyone had the right to talk down on Amber, it’s me and no one else.

On the drive back, she was quiet like she was trying to process everything that happened.

“You didn’t have to hold back,” I said suddenly.

She turned to me. “About what?”

“Them.”

She let out a small breath. “It’s your family plus I don’t want them thinking you made the wrong choice.”

“And you’re my wife.”

The words came out before I could stop them and for some reason, I liked the sound of wife rolling out of my tongue.

Silence filled the car and we were back to our staring contest. She looked away first and I found myself gripping the steering wheel tighter than necessary.

This wasn’t supposed to feel like this, none of it was.

And yet It was already getting harder to separate what was real from what was just part of the deal.

  • A night with my boss   Chapter 18:”Calm before the storm”

Adrian’s pov Standing outside her room, I kept pacing back and forth not knowing whether to knock or just walk past. Since the last incident, she’s been avoiding me and it’s worse since we didn’t go to work anymore.I could hear the rustling pages of a book, I guess she’s reading a book. I really don’t even know how to go over and invite her for the banquet we would be going for. She made it clear to me that she hated my guts and didn’t want to have anything to do with me but this banquet is a huge deal for me as I get to meet investors too. I knocked on her door twice but got no response and just as I was about to leave, I heard the door creak open. It looked like she had been away for months while she was just here but staying away from me. “I’m sorry to disturb you, I just wanted to give you this.” I said stretching out my hand to give her a box. It contained a gown and jewellery for the banquet tonight. She looked at the box and back at me before muttering some words. “What’s

  • A night with my boss   Chapter 17: “Bait”

Adrian’s POVI watched the footage again and it was clearly Amber’s room. The camera angle was precise and it looked like it was planted more like a device. It didn’t look like it was taken by chance or from outside, it looked like an inside job. Who would come to my house to plant a device or did my workers betray me?My jaw tightened.“Run it back,” I said. The screen flickered as the video replayed. The angle didn’t move, it was a fixed position and it was hidden well. This wasn’t Aaron. This was way too professional and well thought out to be Aaron. Aaron was clumsy, he didn’t even have the resources to be able to get this close to my house. This wasn’t some desperate ex trying to make money, this was calculated. My phone buzzed.“Sir, we’ve got movement again.”“Location?”“It’s inconsistent. He’s switching fast. Burner devices.”I exhaled slowly, forcing my thoughts into order. Burner devices? Now it’s clear, I have ruled out Aaron certainly. He’s not capable enough to use bu

  • A night with my boss   Chapter 16: “He’s watching”

Adrian’s POVI didn’t sleep a wink last night, not because of her this time but because of that message.“You really think you’ve won? Let’s see how long she stays yours.”I stood in my study, staring at the screen again like I could figure out who the coward was or the words would somehow change. Whoever this was, they weren’t just bluffing. And that meant one thing, this wasn’t random.I dialed a number immediately, and he picked up the second ring.“Sir.”“I want everything pulled up again,” I said, my voice sharp. “Calls, messages, digital footprints. I don’t care how clean they think they are, find them.”“Yes, sir.”“And increase security.”“For her?”“For the house, for the office and everywhere she goes.”“Yes, sir.”I ended the call, my grip tightening around the phone. Whoever this was, they knew exactly what they were doing. I thought about this long and hard but I couldn’t figure anything out and it was driving me crazy. I stepped out of the study just as I saw her walki

  • A night with my boss   Chapter 15: “Certainty”

Amber’s POVI stayed awake all night staring at the ceiling in my room. Sleep wasn’t forthcoming as I relayed the day’s events over and over again.I couldn’t help but think about him and the way he said those words “You’re mine.” Something about it sent a tingling sensation down my spine. The words kept replaying in my head like a song I didn’t want to remember but couldn’t forget either. I turned on the bed, pulling the duvet tighter around me.This was getting out of hand, It was just a contract.A one-year agreement and nothing more so why did it feel like something was shifting?I exhaled and sat up. Maybe I needed water or something to distract me from the excessive thinking. The house was quiet as I stepped out, what did I expect? He’s probably asleep, it’s so late on the night. But just as I got to the kitchen, I saw him. He was leaning against the counter, sleeves rolled up and a glass of water in his hand. He looked like he had been there for a while and his ruffled ha

  • A night with my boss   Chapter 14: “Our Problem”

Adrian’s POV I couldn’t sleep. Not because I wasn’t tired but because I kept thinking about her. The way she looked when I walked into that room. She looked lost and shaken, she was trying so hard to hold herself together. I didn’t like it. I didn’t like that some pathetic excuse of a man had that much effect on her. And I definitely didn’t like the fact that she didn’t tell me. That didn’t sit right with me. I stood by the window, phone in hand, replaying everything Vee had said. Aaron. The name alone irritated me. Her ex-boyfriend, Pathetic and desperate. He was stupid enough to think he could get away with threatening my wife. A slow smile formed on my lips, he picked the wrong woman. I dialed a number. “Find him.” “I want everything. Where he lives, who he talks to, what he does. Everything.” “Yes, sir.” I ended the call. This wasn’t going to take long, I trusted my sources. I stepped out, expecting to see her, but the hallway was empty. She was probably still asleep

  • A night with my boss   Chapter 13: “Not Again”

Amber’s POV“Amber, it’s time to go.”His voice came through the door again, not the usual arrogant tone but firm enough to pull me out of my spiraling thoughts.I stared at my phone, my hands still shaking. A million dollars by tomorrow, where do I get the money from ? My chest tightened just by thinking about it. “Amber?”“I will meet you downstairs. ”I managed to say, my voice barely steady.I quickly got out of bed, forcing myself to move like everything was normal. Like I wasn’t about to break down in tears. The drive to the office felt longer than usual.I sat beside Adrian, quiet, my mind replaying the video over and over again.I shut my eyes briefly, I couldn’t afford to break down now at least not in front of him. “Did you sleep at all?” he asked suddenly.I blinked, turning to him. “Why would you ask that?”“You look like you didn’t.”“I’m fine,” I replied quickly. He stared at me for a second longer than necessary before he looked away.“I didn’t ask if you were fine.”

  • A night with my boss   Chapter 11:”Peace offering”

Ambers pov After the last conversation we had concerning why I signed the contract, I made sure not be in sight. Luckily, his schedule was completely cleared because of the fake honeymoon we were on. I hadn’t stepped out of my room since today since I didn’t want to bump into him. I was cooped u

  • A night with my boss   Chapter 10: “Terms and Conditions”

Amber’s pov It was already evening before I could discuss with Vee the reason why Adrian’s grandmother came to see me and she wasn’t having it. “What do you mean she wants you to marry her grandson to change him? Does that even make sense?” She said irritated. “I don’t know what to do Vee, I’m

  • A night with my boss   Chapter 9:“The Deal”

Amber’s POV I didn’t stop running until I got to Vee’s place. My chest was rising and falling all at the same time. My mind still spinning from everything that had just happened. The kiss, the cameras and him. “Amber?” Vee’s voice came from behind me, laced with concern. “What happened? You look

  • A night with my boss   Chapter 8: “When Control Slips”

Richard’s POVI didn’t know she could be any more beautiful than she already is. The moment they walked in, the entire room shifted. Heads turned and cameras flashed but none of that mattered to me.Because all I could see was her.She walked beside Adrian, her hand resting lightly on his arm,
