Chapter Twenty-three

She was sitting at the spot he took his bag from. She saw him before he reached her.

He took off his cap and scratched his head as he stood above her. She looked up from her phone and dropped the soda can she had been sipping from.

"That's funny and cute." She smiled, the lights in the area made her milk-brown eyes glow, and it accentuated the highlights of her caramel-brown hair. She was the cute one.

"I know, I think I'm still one of those guys living the high school life in their heads." He said.

Serena chuckled, " You want to sit?" She rubbed the small space on the metal chair.

"If you can share?" Melvin twitched his shoulders.

She moved a bit for him to sit. Somehow, she'd assumed she'd feel currents, maybe sparks, or butterflies swarming her belly with the kind of proximity she now had with him.

Their arms were brushing each other and she felt calm, cool, and collected, no butterflies, nothing to make her think she might erase any feelings she had for a partially non-existent J
