Chapter 10

His mouth hung open, he did not know what to say. He could feel his heart squeeze and a tear threatening to fall but he wiped it off with his hand.

"So no work today?" He asked, his voice shaky.

"No. It's my day off." His father answered.

"Do I'll just... I'll just head out." He said and turned around.

"Shut the door behind you." His father said.

He did. He shut the door behind him and left for the kitchen. His mother was standing over the pot that content was boiling on the burner. She had a wooden spoon in her hand and her hair was tied behind her. He walked over to where she was standing, and the smell of pasta rushed into his nostrils.

"Hey, Mom." He said.

She did not say anything. He could see her tense up, in fear. The sweat that suddenly covered her face made Fay wonder if it was because of his presence or if was it because of the heat of the cooking.

"I was wondering if I could go somewhere. I will only take a day or two. It's really just important." He asked permission.
