Lyra's POV

The dog darted off with my meat between its teeth, and I ran after it with my feet sliding on the damp ground.

“Come back here, you thief!” I shouted, but my voice came out weak. My breath burned my chest as I chased it through the narrow path behind the cooking shed. I hated how light my steps felt, not from strength but because there was nothing in me. I felt tired even before I started running.

The dog was fast, a shaggy brown thing with a tail that wagged like it was proud of itself, and I pushed harder, clutching at my skirts so I would not trip.

“Please stop,” I wheezed and hated how small I sounded.

It darted toward the open training fields, and I followed, cursing under my breath. I wanted to cry, but I kept running with my legs trembling.

When I finally caught up, the dog had stopped near the edge of the field, chewing happily. I bent low, gasping, and grabbed the meat from its mouth.

“You’re wicked,” I muttered, and my hands shook as I wiped the dirt off the steak. Then I heard the giggles behind me.

I froze and slowly looked up. I had run straight into the female training grounds where a group of girls stood a few feet away with wooden staffs in their hands, and in the middle of them stood Luna Selene Moon from the Crestwood Pack, looking at me with an amused smile.

“Well, well,” she said. “Look who the dog dragged in.”

Another girl snorted.

“Or what the dog stole from.” They laughed harder.

I unconsciously gripped my meat even tighter.

“I don’t want trouble,” I said quickly. “I only wanted to take back what was mine.

” Selene stepped closer.

“Such bravery,” she mocked. “Running after scraps like a true Omega.”

“I wasn’t…” I tried, but my voice faded.

“She’s shaking,” one of the younger girls said. “Is she afraid of us or of the dog?”

“She’s just weak,” Selene said with her head tilted and eyes full of pity that wasn’t real. “An Omega who can’t even hold on to her dinner. How will you ever belong here, little mouse?”

The girls laughed again.

I wanted to tell them to leave me alone. I wanted to say I didn’t care, but my tongue betrayed me.

“Please,” I whispered. “I don’t want any trouble.

” Selene looked me over slowly.

“You’re trembling all over. Maybe you should go home before you faint.

” Their laughter followed me as I turned away with my head down so they wouldn’t see the tears in my eyes.

I walked quickly, clinging to the dirty meat close even though I no longer wanted it. I just wanted to get away.

I was still walking down the street when the horns suddenly sounded through the streets, and people stopped talking as everyone moved to the side of the road as guards shouted for us to clear the way.

“The Alpha’s procession,” someone said.

I stepped back, almost bumping into a barrel. Dust rose as a line of riders came through the main street, and at the front was Alpha Kael Stormrunner, tall and proud on a black horse. He rode with calm strength and eyes sweeping over the people gracefully.

For a moment, his gaze landed on me, and it stayed there longer than it should have. I felt my heart jump, but then he looked ahead and passed by with his escort close behind.

When the street grew quiet again, I hurried home, clutching the meat like it might keep me safe, but my mind was all about Alpha Kael...

The moment I pushed open the door, my foster mother stood waiting with her hands on her hips and her eyes narrowed into a frown.

“Where have you been?” she snapped. “And what is that?”

“The steak,” I said softly.

Her face twisted with anger.

“You let a dog take it?”

“I tried to stop it,” I said. “I ran after...”

“You ran?” she cut me off. “Look at you. Dirt all over, hair a mess. And you still messed it up.” She shook her head. “You’re worthless, Lyra. Dumber than the dog you chased.”

I bit my lip and looked at the floor.

“If I had known you would turn out like this, I’d have left you where your last family threw you,” she went on. “At least then I wouldn’t have to feed a useless mouth.

” Her words opened up a whole world of hurt inside me, and for a moment I couldn’t speak.

“Go wash,” she ordered. “And don’t expect supper!”

I slipped past her to the small room I shared with Mira, the youngest daughter of the house. I set the steak on the table and went to the basin. My hands were still shaking as I splashed water on my face and watched as mud streaked down my cheeks, mixing with tears I hadn’t even felt.

I looked at my reflection in the cracked mirror, and a thin girl stared back with her brown hair tangled with her eyes red, and he looked like she didn’t belong anywhere.

My chest tightened, and I pressed my palm to the mirror and closed my eyes.

The door opened softly behind me.

“Lyra?” Mira’s voice came behind.

I turned to see Mira standing there holding a towel. She was the only one who ever smiled at me like that.

“Don’t listen to her,” she said. “You’re not worthless".

I wiped at my face.

“She’s right. I can’t do anything right.”

“That’s not true.” Mira came closer and wrapped the towel around my shoulders. “You had a bad day, that’s all.”

“I always have bad days.”

She squeezed my arm.

“Someone’s here to see you.”

I blinked.

“What?”

“You’ve got a visitor.”

I laughed a little, even though it sounded sad.

“You’re teasing me.”

“I’m not.” Mira seemed serious. “Come to the living room. You’ll see.”

I hesitated. No one ever came for me.

“Come on,” she said.

I followed her through the hall, still drying my face with the towel.

When we entered the living room, I looked up and gasped…

Lyra’s POV. "I have been involved in a few fights in my life and I am not proud of everything that I have done but the only thing you can be rest assured of, is the fact that you would never be disappointed when it comes to me." Lucius told me.My eyes lingered on him, watching the once confident man look like he was trying so hard not to break down in my presence and I kind of understood it but at the same time, realized that he was fighting some battles that would never make any sense to me except he came out clean. "Of course you had to. How is that affecting you now?""Badly, a whole lot of people have different perception about me and as much as I would have loved for me to remain anonymous my past is finally catching up with me and I have to be at the center of it all making sure that everybody has a hand in this no matter what." He wasn't making any sense with his analogy and even though I wanted to believe him to some extent, I kind of felt like there was a little something

Kael's POV.My wolf led me to the plains, that was the only place that I could be able to get answers for what I was looking for and how long he was going to take for me to fathom a reasonable explanation and why she just disappeared. Selene must have been a bastard for thinking that you'll be able to make me convinced to do whatever she wanted and not what I truly wanted. How on Earth does she even think that it was possible? I had nothing to lose but she had everything and the entire world too. The father was not even as popular as he wanted to preserve his legacy and I was doing this simply because my pack members decided to go on a long journey to make sure that I was not doing anything against what was already in the works. I had nothing to lose nor gain, but now that Selene had spoken about it I was willing to abandon a few things to seek that girl out. She couldn't have been really far away or else I would have found her by now. I also didn't have anything to say apart fro

Lyra's POV.My first move was to comb the entire area making sure that I was able to drag the few things out."Don't you have a whole lot of things that you have to put into place before we start fighting against somebody that we know is going to prevail one way or the other?" It just didn't make sense to me no matter how much they were trying to go about it and paint it to be the real thing. I had already discovered a better way of handling the situation but none of this was sufficient enough for me. I had more ideas running through my mind and until they were done, I had nothing to fight for.One thing that was certain was the fact that I decided to go on with the entire trip. For Camille to think that everything was fine on my end and I was not under any pressure to give them a correct prediction or else lead them to their doom, she was just the same like everybody else. Most of them had concluded that I was overreacting about certain things that I did which was okay by me and

Kael's POV. I didn't have much to think of but I knew that something had been going on that I have was not very attentive to and I needed to change that immediately before it was so late for me to do that anymore I wasn't obsessing over Selene but she had made very valid points and I needed to check downtown just to see what was lurking behind this scenes As a spy myself I knew that whenever there was a lot of count it was going to birth something more than a whirlwind. I didn't have much to talk about but I was very sure that there was even something else going on that needed to help in releasing the pains. I had nothing more to look for besides the obvious answers that I had gotten over a long time. I didn't also have what it took to be able to switch things up but I was sure that at some point I would be able to see what was going on and deal with it. Firstly there was nothing else that I needed to do that was going to help out. All I needed right now was to make sure that I h

Lyra's POV. One of the most amazing things that I had ever done in my entire life had to be the fact that I have been able to understand the difference between the different timelines and how to navigate through it without losing my mind.I was only committed to one and that needed all the time in the world just to be able to sort many differences out."So... Are you a little bit worried by what this might bring and how longMy heart was pounding so hard that I almost felt it leaping out of my chest. My hands were tight but I had only one will.I needed to live, even if that was the last thing that I did. There was basically no option for me and I wasn't going to take chances. "If she gets away, we are doomed!" Somebody yelled from behind me. I was a little bit irritated by the way they were acting but I couldn't blame them either. It wasn't entirely there fault the way things were going, they had just been conditioned to think that Selene wielded the entire power. I also thought

Lyra's POV. I didn't think that there was going to be a change in the fact, "I didn't have the right to change the mandate but there wasn't anything more the other day." "Are you sure that there's something wrong with the issues at hand or is this something else that you need to tell me?" Camille headed towards me with the intention to get more information out of me but that was not going to happen. I had already figured out that there was going to be a little bit of a mix up here and there and I was waiting to see how long it was going to take and what exactly I had to do to sort out the entire problems. I had taken a deep breath yet refused to look straight into what she wanted me to do. I was thinking about how long it was going to take for me to be able to sort out a few things but here I was, dealing with more issues than none. "Is this really a thing or...?"I took a deep breath refusing to answer my question because it was harmful to my person and I would love to have the
