Chapter 22: Escaping The Rogue

MARE:

I scream, but the surge of water into my system shuts me up. I'm plunged beneath the surface again and all sounds drown out. The water is dark around me and the deeper I go, the lesser my eyes work.

I struggle to swim up again, but the force pulling me down is great. It's worse because I can't figure out what it is. I thrash my legs violently and when my head shoots over the surface, I suck in as much air as I can.

The metal door is just an arm's stretch away. I pluck out the key from beneath my tongue and shove it into the lock, begging my luck to shine this once.

I can't just break it open, because then he'll know.

"Come on." I mutter into the deafening silence surrounding me. "Come on."
