Chapter 1

ONE

Rowena’s POV

‘A daughter of a murderer! No man can ever love you.’ Those words still sting as much as they had the first time. It’s been two years since my father’s execution. He was a drunkard during his lifetime and never ran out of money for a bottle. Not only did he make a name for himself but for me too.

Without even having to try, my father successfully turned my life upside down. Technically, my demised mother was just a mistress to him before she died in vain. As an illegitimate child, I have since then learnt to act oblivious to the pack’s hatred towards me.

Then Sèbastien happened. My mate came and healed the grievous memories. We met and he showered me with the love I couldn’t even give myself. Sèbastien was all I could ever pray for. When he told me he was ready to start a family with me, it felt surreal.

I've known him ever since my father died and it didn't make any sense one of the biggest influential pack's Alpha would want me as a mate. But he did. Infact I can see it from the way he looks at me that we both love each other deeply

Fast forward to toda, side by side with my mate, Sébastien, the Alpha of The Blue Moon pack, I will be declared as his mate, and crowned the Luna. In short, I never thought this day would come.

I took a breath and stared at myself in the mirror. My reflection did not look like me. I mean, this was not the same face I see everyday in the mirror. I looked different, and might I added, beautiful.

"My lady. The Alpha think this would go well with any dress of your choice." Voice of Kiara, my personal maid, pulled me from my trance and I turned to see her take a jewelry box out of nowhere and drop it on the table.

"Is it new?" I asked and she nodded, her eyes glistering with admiration.

"He just had them deliver it from the most popular jewelry store in the pack. May I put it on you?"

"Yes, please." Soon enough I was staring at the pendant on my neck in the mirror. I blushed as I imagined my mate's reaction.

Memories of the time spent together with my father, most especially my mother's rushed into my mind. Will my mother be happy for me from the world beyond? How much proud of me would she be? Despite how much she loved me, it's a pity she didn't get to spend more time with me.

Even though she's gone, I'm grateful she was the right woman to birth me and the best I could ever have.

"Now, I'm ready." I mumbled, failing to keep my nervousness in check. As Kiara led out out of the chamber, a frown appeared on my face as I stepped out of the dressing room to see he had left. But I did not mind. All of this will be worth it, I hope.

I took a light step into the hall, acknowledging the greetings of the servants as I passed them. My hands were sweating, and suddenly I wished to go back to the chamber but I took a deep vreath. I wish I had either one of my parents here with me.

The party seemed to be kicking off in full effect. And thankfully, I did not have to look further before finding Sèbastien, seated on his throne among his fellow Alphas.

“Baby, do you miss me?” I asked my mate, lifting my dress up to seat beside him. He was engrossed staring ahead that he didn’t even notice me by his side.

"You look stunning, my lady." He said and I barely smiled. His reaction was the same as I thought of it to be when he finally took me in the dress I was wearing.

"You're gorgeous, in fact." He took my extended hand and kissed it before he looked ahead again.

I resisted the urge to not look the direction. It was too late. My heart gnashed with jealousy.

It’s Olivia, his childhood best friend. She’s on the dance floor with many other pack members, swaying her hip to the sensual beat. I began to doubt my presence when she kept glancing in his direction bashfully. Either she was entirely oblivious or chose to ignore me.

I knew I was probably crazy when I looked over to Sèbastien and saw the lustful gleam in his eyes.

He assured me he was over her, at least I thought he was. But then I would catch him gawking at her, if not in a corner speaking too closely with her.

It had been weeks since Olivia’s return to the pack.

As much as I tried getting it out of my chest, something had definitely changed. He rarely became intimate with me. I can’t remember the last time we slept on the same bed. Not when he wouldn’t even come home for dinner.

"Tell me how much you love me." I suddenly said.

"I do love you." He replied softly and I smiled.

"How much?"

"Rowena, I'm about making you my Luna." He chuckled, bringing my palm to his lips once again. "Because you're the best mate I can even get."

"Yes, together we're unbreakable." I agreed.

"Shall we have this dance?" He asked and extended a hand out to me. His face lightened as I met his hand with one of my own and together, we made our way to the dancefloor as the music began.

My eyes were on him the entire as we dance, moving our bodies with the music. Just when I thought his eyes were begining to wander to Olivia again, one hold of my hand and then he swirled me around before he grabbed at my waist to pull me close.

"I can assure you, I'll make today the best day of your life." he stated and I smiled.

“Go back.” Sèbastien spoke all of a sudden, clearing this throat and looking so nervous.

My hand involuntarily hung in the air, taken aback. I quickly shifted away from him, willing myself to try and understand what he meant.

“W—what?” I stuttered, watching him rise to his feet to peer down at me.

His words unexpected, I almost contemplated looking behind to see whom he was speaking to, but his eyes rested solemnly on me. Those eyes that were often filled with sparks when he looked at me were now occupied with guilt.

The party was going well. As much as it hurt, I didn’t try stopping him from ogling Olivia. I know how important the party is. How the slightest mistake could make everything go wrong.

Today was my day. I won’t have jealousy snatch it from me.

“Rowena. Please go back in there and change. I need to confirm something, do you hear me?” He days low enough for me to hear and I could have sworn the temperature dropped the moment the whole pack turned their eyes on us.

My heart ratcheted in a thunderous beat. My throat is suddenly burning with panic. The music has stopped. Olivia, the sole cause, stood at a short distance, a sly smile on her face.

I won’t be a weakling and give in to her deceit. The moon goddess did her part by blessing me with a mate. Now it’s my turn. I was going to do anything to make this marriage work.

“Why?” I broke into a smile and asked Sèbastien. I tried holding his hand but he backed away. He’s so hellbent on disgracing us in front of his pack members. Was Olivia better than me? Was she enough reason for him to shun me this way?

I have no one other than him. Was it that hard for him to see?

“I'm sensing smell like that of my mate and need to go to her. Now will you go inside?” A long sigh escaped him as if he knew this was going to happen. My body shuddered, but this time I didn’t sweat it. When I turned and Olivia locked eyes with me, I became tempted to stay.

I stood rooted on the spot, matching her challenging gaze. Until I became done for. Sèbastien grabbed me by the arm, not stopping until he had pushed me to a corner.

He ran his fingers in his hair before he cleared his throat and said, "I know how much you want this ceremony but think about me too. I know you're my mate but I'm sensing another. Remember you said you will do anything for me, Rowena. I think it's Olivia, I need to go and meet her_"

“What are you talking about, Sèbastien? You assured me I was the one you want, and that she remains your best friend. You told me there was nothing between you and Olivia, Sèbastien!” I cried out and shook my head in absolute terror.

“That was then. Now, something else is occuring and a new mate scent is coming from her. With us we might have made a mistake Rowena, please understand. Don't you love me?" He let go of my one hand and I could literally see my world crumbling down to the ground.

"Pardon?" I looked up at him, not quite believing what he's saying. “W—what about the promises? What about me, huh?”

My heart constricted with pain, still I held on to the little hope I have left.

Sèbastien has an addiction toward alcohol. This could be one of his many gibberish. I know him, and I know of how tight he held me close to his heart.

I might seem the biggest irredeemable idiot. He has me etched between his middle finger.

I watched him silently, because I know that was the best way to encourage him to speak. And he did. He spoke what broke my heart.

“Believe it or not, I regret it. I regret ever having to break your heart this way but I'm with no choice.“ Strange enough I found myself following his words but Sèbastien didn’t think twice before hitting me with the reality.

This better be a nightmare. The man standing before me wasn’t the sweet loving and understanding man I knew. The Sèbastien I knew was the one who stood by me when the rest of the world turned their backs on me. Strange enough, I never expected him to react with such rage on our happy day. This new reality was frightening for me.

“Think once again, Sèbastien. Is this truly what you want?” I asked at the verge of tears.

“I have, sweetheart. Each time, I end up with a million reasons why I should go for Olivia instead. Remember you're unable to give me an heir, so if you truly love me, please give me your support Rowena. Although I love you, I... it's just a decision I have to make.” Sèbastien suddenly crouched down in front of me and knee, making me sniff back my tears.

I must look like an abandoned kitten. Like some dirt he’d been waiting to get rid of. I'm a second option and that makes me want to run into a hole and die of shame.

We have been mated to each other for two years now without a child. I couldn’t bear him child and once again became a subject of penury and ridicule to his pack. Even though our mate bond has been on the verges of collapsing, he was patient. With me. With us.

Passing of days and it’d be me crying and looking up to the moon goddess. I begged her for a child to call our own. At least one child essential for my mate to secure his father’s throne. I devoted myself to prayers. Years passed, and I’m still as empty and the same barren I was.

Do I have him to blame? Perhaps more patience. I want to get pregnant too. I believe the moon goddess is working it out. I—

He closed up the gap between us and I flinched as fresh tears rolled down my cheeks.

“Now please go back inside. That is if you desire for me to be happy." He sounded apologetic but I said nothing when I couldn't take it anymore, I turned the direction of the hall. I don't care, I want to be annouced his mate_

"Rowena!" He caught up with me and turned my body around to face him, "This is if you love me." He looked into my eyes for the first time since the confession and all I saw was a sea of shame and anguish.

I wiped my tears and instead of our shared bedroom, I left for my mine. The one I haven’t slept at for so long. I did what I know best. I cried myself to sleep. Anything to temporarily dissolve the pain I was feeling.

~

I woke up late in the morning to the ringing of my phone. My body sore and face still smeared with tears from last night. Last night was the most disastrous day I ever lived in. Why was I still hoping Sèbastien had be back to his senses by now?

I removed the blanket and retrieved my phone from the nightstand. I got up and was almost knocked down on my face. On an impulse, I looked down at my feet, only to find Sèbastien and Olivia on the floor completely naked against each other.

“W-hat?!” Shock rippled through me. I gasped as I slapped my hands over my mouth. Did Sèbastien sleep with her last night? My gaze landed on the discarded condom. “N-no, this can’t be.”
