Chapter Three

Cassandra's POV

"What!" I was very surprised at the condition she gave me.

"You heard me right," Emelia said.

"No, I can't do it. I just met you minutes ago and now you are asking me to be your surrogate, I can't believe this. I am sorry I can't help you, I don't even trust you." I stood up from my seat in anger.

"You should find someone else," I added.

"I can give you any amount you want and think about your brother,"

"I'll find a solution to that but I can't do this. I can't get pregnant now, that is a really big decision," I was getting annoyed.

"Fine, but if you change your mind don't hesitate to call me," Emelia handed me a card containing her phone number and address.

"Have a nice day," She added and dropped a fifteen euro bill on the table then walked away.

I walked out of the coffee shop and took a taxi back to the hotel. When I got to my hotel room, I dropped my shopping bags on the bed then brought out my laptop to search for a list of vacancies in Andalusia. After two hours of searching, I found a vacant position as a waitress in a restaurant, the pay wasn't much but it was something.

Lucky for me, the interview was tomorrow. I shut down my laptop then called room service and ordered a hamburger and fruit juice. I haven't eaten anything since morning and I was starving.

****

I woke up early to get ready for the interview though I didn't sleep most of the night, I was busy worrying about Jake. I wore a white shirt with a black skirt and styled my hair in a tight bun just to look presentable and organized, and off I went to the restaurant.

It took me forty-five minutes to get to the restaurant because of an accident that happened earlier this morning. I was already late. I was supposed to be there before 8:00 am and it's already 8:45 am.

I ran into the building but I wasn't looking when I bumped into someone who was holding a cup of tea and it all spilled on my shirt.

"Fuck, watch where you are going," I said frustrated, I ran into the nearest bathroom and tried getting the stain off but it didn't wash off.

If I wanted to make a good impression before, the stain on my shirt ruined it all, worst of it all I arrived late for the interview.

I walked into the room where other people were already taking tests, I felt people staring at me but I didn't care, I quickly took my seat and started the test.

After taking the tests we were all asked to wait for the manager of the restaurant so he could make his decision. He was filling in for the owner of the restaurant since he was presently out on a business trip.

A few minutes later the manager came to address us and he chose two people for the job: a blonde and a girl with red hair like mine.

I left the restaurant very devastated and took a taxi back to the hotel. When I got to the hotel I cried my eyes out, how am I going to help my Jake if I didn't have a job.

My phone buzzed beside me on the bed snapping me out of my thoughts. I looked at the caller's name and saw "My Treasure" written boldly on the screen, I had used it to save my mom's number. I stopped crying and quickly wiped tears off my face, I didn't want her to know I was crying.

"Hey Mom," I sniffed.

"Cass, have you found a job yet," Mum asked.

"No mum, I went for an interview today but I didn't get the job," I tried my best not to cry.

"It's okay dear, your father and I have decided to sell the house," Mum said.

"No Mum, don't sell the house. Where are you going to live? I'll find a solution but please don't sell the house." I started crying again.

"Don't cry Cass, we have no other option but to sell the house, we are trying to find a buyer, in a week the house will be sold."

"A week?"

"Yes, a week, I have to go now. I'll talk to you later." Mum said and hung up.

I can't allow Mum to sell the house, what do I do. I paced up and down the small room, trying to think of a solution. While I was brainstorming I spotted the card Emelia gave to me yesterday on the bedside table.

I hesitated a little thinking about how the decision was going to change my life forever but I had to do it to save Jake's life and my parents won't have to sell the house. I summoned up courage then dialed the number on the card, it rang for some time before someone answered.

"Emelia Astley residence, how can I help you?" a woman who didn't sound like Emelia said probably her assistant or maid.

"Cassandra Valdez, I would like to speak with princess Emelia,"

"Okay, hold on a minute." The woman said.

"Cass, how are you, my dear." I heard Emelia's cheerful tone, she seemed very happy although I knew why.

"I'm fine, I have to tell you something," I said.

"Okay I'm listening," Emelia replied and I took deep breaths before saying,

"I've decided to take up your offer, I'm ready to be a surrogate for you and your husband," I let out a sigh.

"Oh that's wonderful," Emelia sounded excited.

"But you have to promise to keep the baby away from me after delivery and you must keep this a secret," I said sternly.

Emelia was silent for some time, I guess she was wondering why any woman would not want to see her child.

"Okay deal, come over to my house tomorrow and we will discuss more on it."

" Okay, see you tomorrow," I said and ended the call.

I can't believe a few weeks from now I was going to be pregnant. The thought made me want to cry but I had to do it to save Jake's life.

Next day

I don't want to do this. I thought to myself as I dressed up to go over to Emelia's house to discuss more on me being a surrogate.

I wore a red knee-length lace dress, styled my hair in a ponytail, and wore black flats.

And off I went downstairs to wait for the driver Emelia insisted on sending to drive me to her house.
