The Sacred Moon Rite always started off the same, fire, rituals and the joyful dance around the sacred fire.
I stood between my parents as the wolves congregated in the full moonlight, lighting the whole territory with the glow of the ceremony. The wolves rounded in circles, chanting harmoniously and receiving the blessing of the Moon Goddess. It all seemed so peaceful and calm. Alpha Ciaro, dressed in fur that was adorned by silver markings. "This isn't your first sacred rite Ana, you should also go dance and get the blessing of the Moon Goddess. " my father said, never bothering to turn towards me. "I've been there before," I stated. Alpha Ciaro turned to me. "Watching is one thing; but being a part of it is something completely different." Luna Thaila rubbed the back of my cloak, holding onto it longer than usual.. "You should listen to your father " she muttered. "Not now Mom." "You will" she said softly. "You seem tense. It's just a dance okay but if you don't want to dance it's fine." I scowled at her, but she was already looking past me towards the ceremony again. Drums beat deeper. The Pack raised their chants. The fire in the middle burned higher, as though responding to the beats. And then I saw something I shouldn’t have seen. The guard of the eastern gate wasn’t facing outward anymore. He was facing inward. I tilted my head a little. “Father… “ “What?” “The guard…” I whispered, “he turned around.” He did not even look up fully. “Rotation change.” “He was not assigned to tonight’s duty” Mother’s hands stopped moving behind my shoulders. For a single second. Then she kept smoothing my cloak. “Ana,” she soothed, “don’t pay attention to things that are insignificant.” This, however, was not insignificant. Since the guard himself didn’t just stand incorrectly. He seemed planted there on purpose. The chanting intensified. The flames rose and lit. The moon above became nearer and heavier with its gaze, weighing upon us. Then there was a scraping noise, softly made and not ceremonial. Definitely not right, yeah. My eyes turned towards the east gate again. The guard was gone. I blinked my eyes, “Where is he… ?” There was a cry heard above the chants, cutting through the air like a knife. Silence stretched for half a second. Then came another cry. Followed by yet another one. The ceremony was destroyed in seconds. "What is that?!" someone screamed. A warrior turned and fell. Before I could fully understand what was happening, I saw the sword in his back. It's Cirgee’s. My body clenched tightly in panic. "Father…" I whispered. But Alpha Ciaro had already reacted. He sent out his aura, pushing it against everyone there. "All guards, formation now!" It almost worked. All of the warriors turned to listen. They reformed. Until three warriors stopped moving. Exactly at the same time. As though they had received the same silent order. Then they turned to Alpha Cairo simultaneously. "No…" I breathed. The gates in the east lowered slowly from within the compound. My father saw what was happening. His demeanor changed suddenly. Not out of fear but out of calculation. "Who opened the gate!…" he screamed loudly. Then, the horn rang out. But it wasn't ours. A rogue signal. The trees on either side burst. Wolf soldiers walked into the light. Fast and purposefully as though they were invited. My heart sank. "This is an attack" I whispered. "Stay behind me," Luna Thaila demanded, gripping my arm. Alpha Ciaro continued forward. "Seal the gate!" They no longer moved as one. Instead, guards turned to attack the other guards. "Why is this happening…" I whispered again. But then I saw him. Lucan Graves. Standing in front of the central fire as if he had always belonged there. Alpha Ciaro paused abruptly. "Lucan!". Lucan didn't move or react like a man who was caught. He simply glanced around. At the shifting guard formation, at the open gates and at the dividing Pack. He smiled. A smile that was somehow off in the blood stained sacred night. "You're early," Lucan said. Alpha Ciaro’s Wolf flared up violently. "What have you done?!" Lucan merely tilted his head a little. "I completed what you couldn't even begin." Alpha Ciaro immediately attacks him. But just before he touched Lucan, two guards faced him. Alpha Ciaro’s movements halted because they weren't just random guards. They were his inner guard formation, his skilled personal warriors. My stomach fell out. "They are his guards…" I said quietly. Lucan appeared unfazed. "They are mine now," Lucan said confidently. Alpha Ciaro was pushed back. He couldn't believe the betrayal right before him. It was like a dream that shouldn't come true. As if the entire battlefield is compressing around him, he is isolated, Luna Thaila tries to save him but Lucan comes closer to him and within a split of seconds Lucan kills Alpha Ciaro with a dagger. Luna Thaila screamed and pulled me harshly. "Ana. You have to move. "I hesitated. Lucan orders for Alpha Ciaro’s body to be burnt in the sacred fire, his body is thrown into the fire. I ran with my mom, but I kept watching in tears, I could see how my father's body burned in the sacred fire. The massacre continues, anyone who stepped in to stand for Luna Thaila and I is killed. We found the boundary of the sacred ground on which the opening to the tunnel was concealed under stones. When my mother opened it, cold air burst out. “run faster,” she commanded. I stopped. “Without You?” “Ana” “I need you to survive even if I have to protect you to my last breath I will!” The sounds of approaching guards split the air above the battleground behind us. Getting closer… Luna Thaila whirled around. Her expression faltered. She turned around and faced me. “Ana,” she said, grabbing my shoulders. “When I say, ‘run,’ you will run.” “She shoved me violently into the tunnel. “Ana run!”. Mother… I said sobbing as I stumbled into the tunnel. I turned, She stood there, blocking the whole world from reaching me with nothing but her body. “Ana!” she shouted only once. Then the tunnel door stones started moving behind me and it suddenly closed. The woods. My heart wouldn’t stop skipping about His Golden eyes and huge paw prints.Nyra’s worried murmur kept playing in my mind even though I didn’t have the slightest clue of what scared her so badly.Something ancient is moving, she whispered.Ancient compared to Greenwood or Ancient compared to Cirgee. I asked Nyra.Nyra shrugged inside of me.You will understand soon she said softly. Before I had the time to get what she was talking about, quick steps reached our ears. The doors burst open. The scout who first saw Rex the silvery wolf from the eastern patrol came in, panting heavily. His boots were caked with mud and there were new cuts all over his forearms as if the branches had tried to keep him back.“Alpha…”He sank down to one knee before Kieran.“We found them.”All conversations stopped immediately.Kieran approached the scout.“The rogue camp?” Kieran asked. The scout shook his head.“Worse.”Frightening odors surrounded the scout. No, not panic… True fright.“I hav
Felt a heat around my chest. The heat refused to disappear. Not even after the silver glow was gone; the medallion lay against my skin still beating.I rubbed my chest abruptly in response a hard growl came out of me.I was astonished, nothing like that had ever happened to me.What could it be, I searched my mind to grasp what just happened but still no clue came. The chief healer watched me for a couple of seconds and then cleared his throat."Everyone else," he said, "get back to work."The crowd began to disperse slowly. There were questions in everyone's eyes.None of them dared to ask.Kieran stood beside me. Are you okay he asked instantly, he looked less worried than he usually is."Well," "how are you?" I looked up to Alpha Kieran shocked. In my mind I could say a list of mean things to him but I kept my cool. How could he be less worried like as though nothing happened to me just now.I managed to give a short answer, I'm fine.I touched my hand to the medallion. Then I l
My gaze wouldn’t leave the medallion which lay in the palm of my hand. The image that was engraved on the metal made me recall some memory that had been hidden so deeply within me that I could not even grasp it.My hand clenched the medallion tightly since my heart simply would not stop beating.Kieran appeared beside me and instead of looking at the medallion,he started observing my face. "Ana," he called quietly, "you know something.Tell me what does this symbol mean to you and why does it affect you so much?"I took a breath and raised my gaze at Kieran. "I have seen this symbol before not here but in Cirgee, in the forbidden archives which my father never let people access alone.I do not remember what it means to me… just that it is very important."Emma loosened in my arms since there was no more fear in her body. Her breathing became calmer, and even though her cheeks were wet with tears, she was ready to answer the questions that everybody wanted to ask."I want to know what
Emma's terrified scream rung throughout the deserted watchtower, paralyzing all warriors on the spot.It clearly meant that she was still alive, but the fear in her scream meant that she was not alone.Without hesitation, Kieran shifted. His wolf growled so hard that everyone froze on the spot. He then demanded the warriors to form a circle around all the exits. Nobody could get out. If Emma was taken by somebody, then they would be forced to provide some explanations tonight. Not wasting any more time, Kieran motioned to me to go inside the building. Rose followed us with several skilled warriors as the rest formed circles around each of the sides of the deteriorated watchtower. The ground floor was empty. Rotten chairs, beams, and dust occupied every corner of it. It seemed like nobody visited this floor lately, yet Emma's scream definitely came from there.Yet another scream broke the silence; it sounded much weaker than the previous one, as if Emma tried to call for help with d
The guard’s words cut deeper than anything else could. "She is gone."I looked at him for a second in disbelief that it took that long for my mind to register it. Emma had been constantly moving around, laughing, making trouble for herself. For such a lively girl to be described with such a word seemed unnatural. I clenched my chest and forced myself to take in a breath, deep and unwilling."What do you mean by she is gone," I asked stepping towards him, more forcefully than intended. "Who was guarding her? When did you last see her? Say it plainly."The guard hesitated, gulped, and said, "She disappeared shortly before the curfew. Her parents believed she was hanging around with other kids but found out that all of them were gone. We searched the surrounding houses, but there is no trace of her."I didn't give myself time to hear another explanation. I sprinted ahead of him towards the center of Greenwood, and my heart beat faster on each stride. Lanterns were lit all over the Pac
Held my hand. Ana; Kieran said as he continued talking..You are worth everything good so what are you thanking me for? It's nothing alright.I still have to thank you, Kieran. For keeping me around after Cirgee.Silence fell heavy on us. His expression remained even. But his eyes turned gentle."You're alive, Ana." "You made it." That's worth it. And then I nodded shyly…Common Ana. Kieran said. "Let's go.""Go where?" I asked. "Wait and u'll see."Together we went out. We walked outside side by side holding hands and laughing. Greenwood seemed different. Not safer. Not quieter. Just alive. There were movements among the buildings.Men repaired the damaged buildings. (Pups)Children played in the pathways. Healers moved their goods. The entire atmosphere was buzzing with life. I watched a mother drag a crying child away from a puddle. The child (pup)protested loudly while the mother ignored her entirely. I giggled. Kieran turned to follow my gaze."That's a future warrior." Huh "A f
There was a pause in the hall after the words were uttered."Signed out using your own authority."It wasn't loud. Honestly it didn't have to be.The silence which followed was more intimidating than anything I had ever seen in Greenwood.I watched Kieran closely. There was no immediate reaction.T
"Alpha! You have to see this!"The cry sliced through Greenwood like a knife.I opened the door straight away. Movement was already filling the hallway. The warriors were rushing toward the center hall.Others were coming out of their quarters with expressions of surprise on their faces. This is ha
Darkness seemed to creep towards me gradually. Distant sounds could be heard somewhere around me, but none of them was audible enough to make out. My body seemed to be weightless and heavily burdened at once; exhaustion had taken me to a place of semi-sleep state. Warmth was then pressed against
I raced forward as soon as the door of the stone shut behind me. My mother's final instruction still resounded within my mind. Run. The darkness consumed me as I sped through the tunnel, my feet slipping on stone. I couldn’t catch my breath. I couldn’t think straight. My chest was on fire so
