3. MENTOR

KAISER

I was punching the shit out of the punching bag kept in the basement, when I heard footsteps approaching me. I didn't let that bother me and continued to punch that bag.

"I got to hear that you basically kicked Rhea out of the house?" I heard Paul's voice.

"Yes," I replied.

"Which meant I missed the drama," he teased.

Paul is my best friend, and the only person whose shit I can tolerate every time is him. He is like a baby brother to me.

"Yes, Paul. You did," I scoffed.

"Yeah. And I'm here. You need to look at me and talk. You don't have to butcher the poor punching bag, how long would it tolerate the torture?" He complained.

I rolled my eyes and stopped punching and turned towards him. The moment I turned, the bag swung and hit Paul in his head and he fell down.

"Ouch!" He whined. I scoffed.

He stood up while rubbing his head and walked towards me.

"What happened Kais? Why are you so frustrated?" He questioned.

I knew I had to tell him everything.

"Do you know? Who set up the bitch Rhea to mate with me?" I bickered.

"Who?"

"My parents."

"What?"

Paul's jaw dropped in surprise. He knew my parents were desperate for me to find a mate, but he didn't wonder that they would stoop this low.

"Yes," I gasped and sat on the bench while he sat beside me.

"Tell me the entire stuff," he demanded.

"You know who is Rhea. And my parents think, that if I am the alpha, I should have a Luna soon or else the pack wouldn't respect me," I complained.

"That's rubbish. The pack respects its alpha due to its leadership skills and strength, his personal life has within to do with the pack," Paul replied.

"True. And I don't believe the way of mating forcefully with someone. Even if I mate with Rhea and produce offspring, it would mean nothing to me as I am not her destined mate," I reasoned out.

"And most important, she is not your mate," he added.

"And she is a wretch," I added.

And then, both of us shared a look before bursting out in laughter.

After laughing for a while, Paul held my shoulders.

"So what if you do have a mate? And you find her, what would you do?" Paul asked.

At first, I was surprised by his question and to be honest, I had no answers to it. I hadn't thought about having a mate ever in my life.

"After twenty eight years of my life, I don't think I would ever find a mate now. But even if I did, honestly, I don't want a mate," I admitted.

"Why?" Paul questioned.

"I have seen strongest of Alpha's falling weak and helpless due to their mates and families. We can't forget about the tragedy that happened twenty eight years ago when an alpha and his entire pack were butchered brutally, and he couldn't even fight properly because he had his Luna and his cub. I don't want that ever. I want my entire strength devoted to my pack. I don't want my mate," I spoke.

"But what if you find one and fall in love?" He questioned.

"I wouldn't let that happen," I chuckled.

He smiled as he looked at me. Paul was the beta of our pack and was blindly devoted to me. Sometimes I thought, maybe I had let him down. Just because I couldn't find a mate, he rejected his mate as well, so that I don't feel left out.

And then, we heard a couple of footsteps approaching us. We stood up and looked towards the door. And then, we found it was some of the elder wolves of the pack along with my father.

I looked at them.

"What happened?" I asked.

"There is an issue," my father spoke nervously.

"What happened?" Paul asked.

"We have got an intel regarding humans," Marshal, one of the oldest members of our pack spoke.

"What?" I was curious now.

"We have got to know, that humans are carrying out some kind of experiment with wolfsbane. A lot of bushes of wolfsbane from this forest were cleared out a few days ago, and this might possess a serious hazard to us," Marshall spoke.

Marshall's words put me to worry. Wolfsbane is like a poison to us and could easily kill us. Humans are the most destructive creatures in this world due to their hold on technology, weapons and medicines. And this was certainly not a piece of good news.

"But ninety eight per cent of the humans have no idea about the existence of werewolves, how could they possibly harm us?" Paul countered.

"What if the wolfsbane is in the hands of the remaining two per cent?" I spoke.

"Most of them are the allies of the supernaturals," Paul argued.

"We never know what's inside someone's head," I looked at him.

Everyone went silent as this was a serious issue. I could look at the worry on their faces. They should be worried because it's a matter of their existence and I had to take an initiative.

I gulped and then took a deep breath.

"I will be going among humans and figure out the reason for the missing wolfsbane," I announced.

Everyone looked at me in surprise but I had made a decision.

"No. Kaiser. You're our Alpha. You can't do that," my father argued.

"I am the alpha that's why I am doing this. I have to make sure about the safety of my pack," I retorted.

"Kaiser is right," Marshall sided with me.

I passed a mild smile to him.

"And maybe he finds his mate amongst the humans. He has to meet with new people now," he added.

I rolled my eyes. Why was everyone hell bent on finding a mate for me? What would I do with a mate? Dance?

"But I will go with Kaiser," Paul spoke up.

I looked at Paul and was surprised.

"Paul!" I muttered.

"I am the beta of this pack and it's my duty to make sure of my alpha's safety," he added.

"Okay," my father agreed.

"Marshall," I looked at the old man.

"In our absence, you will be looking up for the pack and making decisions. The young army is always ready for a fight if needed," I spoke.

He nodded at my words.

"Come Paul. We should pack our stuff and leave the earliest," I spoke and then walked out of the room along with Paul.

After a couple of hours, I and Paul were standing in front of my car and everyone had gathered to see us off. I passed a wide smile before leaving and got into my car.

Paul sat on the passenger's seat while I drove the car towards a different city.

As we drove a few miles from our home, Paul turned on the music while I smiled.

"So! Do you have a plan?" Paul asked.

"Yes, I do," I smirked.

"What is it?" He sounded curious.

"I have got information that the wolfsbane was taken to a medical institute. My informers hiding among the humans have prepared a plan for us to enter the institute," I spoke.

"What is it?" He asked.

I remained quiet and drove while smiling at the curiosity of Paul. After driving for a while, I stopped the car on the side of a road and pulled down the windows of my car.

A man walked towards us and handed over a huge envelope. I smiled at him before pulling up the windows and handed over the document to Paul and started driving.

"What's this?" He questioned.

"Open it," I winked.

Paul started opening the envelope.

"This has our ids and every other document that we will be needing. We will be entering the medical institute as PhD students who are here for an internship. We will stay with them for two months. If we get any information, then good, or else, we would go to a different medical institute," I explained.

"This sounds like a movie on undercover agents," Paul spoke excitedly.

"Well, we're going undercover," I winked.

And then, we drove our way to the first medical institute, 'IESM'.

I parked my car in the parking lot of the medical institute and I looked at Paul. He looked nervous.

I patted his shoulders and smiled.

"Are you ready buddy?" I questioned.

"Yeah. I guess I am," he nervously replied.

"Then come on," I winked.

And then, we walked toward the entrance of the institute. As we got to the reception, we looked around.

To enter the institute, we had to provide our biometrics, and we weren't registered with it. The moment Paul noticed this, he was about to panic, but I held his hand and he immediately calmed down.

I walked towards the guy sitting at the reception.

"Hey! Hello," I smiled.

"Yes! How may I help you?" She politely asked.

"Actually, we're here for the internship. It's our first day," I replied.

"Okay. Can I see your ids?" She replied.

"Yes," I nodded.

And then, I handed over mine and Paul's fake college id to her. She had a look at the ids and then returned them to us, while I wondered about her next step.

"Wait a minute please," she politely replied.

And then, she dialled a number while we waited.

"Ma'am. We have our interns," she muttered on the phone.

"Okay," she replied after a while and hung up the phone and looked at us.

"Your mentor, Maya Whitmore is arriving in a moment, please wait," she spoke politely.

"Okay!" I nodded.

Maya Whitmore! I don't know why, but I find this name fascinating.

And then, I saw a girl entering the reception and walking towards us. The moment I saw her, I could feel my heart beating rapidly.

Fuck? Why is my heart dancing?

She stood in front of us with a beautiful smile and forwarded her hand towards us.

"Hello. I am Maya Whitmore. Your mentor," she spoke.

Her voice was sweet as honey.

The moment, I walked towards her to shake hands with her, I don't know how, but I tripped and thud.

I fell on the floor!
