MasukNat's POV
Thalie crosses her legs, her voice filled with arrogance even though she is smiling. "I hope you realize now that I'm more than qualified for this position." The supervisor gives an awkward chuckle. “Well! Natasha will be with us for one more month. Plenty of time for you to learn the ropes together.” “She is planning to resign?” Ivan speaks, his gaze snapping to me, his voice laced with surprise. I ignore him, instead flipping through the files in my hand. He averts his gaze when the supervisor answers. “Yes. Unfortunately. She is one of our hardest workers. I’ll miss her dearly. But one can’t stand in the way of greatness. Wherever Natasha goes, she’ll excel. I know that." Thalie snorts, the sound filled with ridicule. The supervisor’s gaze moves between us, and one could almost see the question mark on her forehead. I shake my head. “I’ll take my leave now.” The supervisor nods, yet Thalie raises her hand. “How about I come with you? I would love to observe." Ivan quickly grabs her hand. “Thalie, you have to consider your health. What you need most is rest. Have you forgotten what the doctor said?” Thalie pouts. “She keeps bringing up qualifications this, qualifications that. I want to see her fabulous expertise works. And she only has a month! I have to get started, shouldn’t I?” Ivan’s brow furrows and he nods. “Uh, yeah, that’s right. But not now, okay? There are still plenty of time left." “Ivan…” she whined, her voice dropping to a low, intimate pitch that made our supervisor suddenly find the wall calendar fascinating. But the two are clearly having their main character moments and are in their own worlds. Thalie reaches up, cupping his cheeks in both hands, her tone shifting to one of childish pleading. “I know you care about me. And I appreciate that. It makes me feel wanted and loved. Thank you, Ivan. However…” Her voice drops even lower, akin to a murmur. “Your care… I’m so used to it that I think I’m becoming spoiled. So even when my health is obviously not good enough, I know you’d be there for me. Right?” She stares into his eyes, her own shining. “Whenever you’re with me, nothing feels impossible. I know you’d have my back as always. So Ivan… You will come with me, wouldn’t you?” [I’m impressed.] Noelle mumbles with both disgust and admiration. I clench my fist, watching Ivan nod and smile ear to ear with flushed cheeks. He doesn’t give an answer, but the way he clasps his hands with Thalie tells a lot. [What a nice friendship they have.] Noelle mocks. Meanwhile, the supervisor turns to me, and as much as I want to say no, that I don’t want these two with me, I know damn well I’d have to give a sensible reason. And at the end of the day, there is no guarantee that they would actually understand or listen. They both are the type to do whatever they want without any consequences. My hand clenches. Just a few minutes. I’d be done with them. And also done for today. I can do it. Taking a deep breath, I walk out of the office, with them following. I put on the disposable surgical mask over my nose and mouth, tie my hair into a neat bun, and slip into my long white lab coat, the sleeves rolled just above my wrists. I turn to the two who look like doomed couples, unwilling to let go of each other’s hand. “Put on these.” I snap, holding out the surgical masks. My gaze stays on Ivan as I ask, “Do you seriously want to come in with her to a patient's room? This is not a gallery.” He dodges my gaze and looks elsewhere. “Of course. I’ll be worried if she is left alone. You know, her health is not good. And she’d totally exert herself in my absence.” [What a beautiful, pure friendship.] Noelle mocked. Thalie holds his arm, smiling sweetly. “You’re not jealous, Nat, are you?” I don’t bother to respond. “Keep your distance once we get there. Just observe from the back. No interfering. You can do that, can’t you?” Thalie tilts her head. “So many rules.” “I only ask two things of you. I wonder how you survived under Dr. Mirabelle if basic clinical decorum is so elusive.” Ivan frowns. “Nat, that’s too—” “I wasn’t talking to you, Alpha. And if you are so concerned, perhaps you should be in your office, governing, instead of strong-arming your way into a medical assessment. Or does your title only serve to help you bend rules for her?” Without waiting for thier replies, I turned on my heels. “Follow me.” Pushing open the door to Room 3, my eyes collide with the patient. A young woman whose story is quite… deep. Her hair is tousled from sleep, and her face is as pale as paper. Her blue eyes light up at the sight of me, and a small smile curls on her lips. “Good morning, Nats.” I return the smile while asking, “How did you sleep?” “It’s better now,” she says softly, her eyes wandering to the two behind me. “The new intern. She is here to observe.” “Okay.” She gives a little nod, then waves shyly. “Hi. Thanks for coming.” There is no response from the two. I squeeze her hand gently to reassure her before finally beginning the assesment. I begun from gently palpating her abdomen, explaining each movement. “Remember how we talked about relaxing the pelvic muscles? Try to breathe slowly for me.” Freya nods, cheeks flushing slightly. “I… I’ll try.” As I lean down gently to adjust the position of a pillow to make her more comfortable, there is a sudden warmth that makes me freeze. The room turns quiet, and the sound of liquid is especially loud. The patient is the same. Her eyes wide, and a mortified whisper escapes her lips. Years of practice instantly kick in and I grab a towel. “It’s okay,” I say in a whisper, staring into her eyes reassuringly. “Accidents happen, especially with your recent surgery. You're good.” Until there is a snicker, low and mocking.Nat's POVThalie crosses her legs, her voice filled with arrogance even though she is smiling. [Can I safely assume this woman has a fucking homing beacon on us?] Noelle mutters, her voice thick with annoyance. An ominous feeling settles in my stomach, dark and foreboding. My fingers instinctively curl into fists. It can’t be… right? The supervisor’s face brightens with a professional smile. “Perfect timing! Come in.”The door opens, and my vision blur. The supervisor is still smiling. “Natasha, that’s the—”“The new intern,” I finish for her.She nods, to my horror. “Why, yes. Thalie Noor, our new intern. She’ll be shadowing you.”I snap. “Does she even possess the basic qualifications for this ward, or is this just another privileged placement?”“What do you mean by that?” Thalie’s voice echoes behind me, filled with confusion. Ivan’s arm is wrapped possessively around her waist. They both stare at me; his expression a mix of warning and disappointment, hers wide-eyed innocence. The supervisor smiles awkwardly. “Natasha isn’t feeling well today. Please excuse her.” With that,
Nat’s POV“Defensive. You keep acting like a shrew and all, even insulting Thalie. Look, I actually wanted to ask you; since you’re a doctor, regarding what Thalie should take for her cold. But you just wouldn’t pick up your phone to be helpful.”The absurdity of his words makes my stomach churn even harder. I stare into his eyes, fingers digging into my nails. “Do you seriously have no idea who pushed me into the pool and how I caught this cold, huh?”He looks at me, puzzled.I take a deep breath, trying to regulate my emotions. “You know what? You’re a lost cause.”I turn sharply, desperate for space and clean air, but he grabs my sleeve again. His pull is forceful, and I’m caught off guard. His other arm instinctively shoots out, catching me around the waist. His firm grip, once familiar, now feels like a violation that makes my skin crawl.“Where are you going without answering my question?” he demands, voice hard.I want to say something, snap back, shove his hand away, remind hi
Nat’s POVI take a cab to the hospital, glancing at the wristwatch where it displays how late I am. Thirty minutes late.I bite my lips and brush my hair back before entering the building, waving at a few colleagues along the way.As soon as I check in, my colleague with the previous shift immediately wave. “Nat, you’re here.”I walk over with a smile. “Good morning, Sera. Apologies for the delay.”She yawns, stretching as she gets up. “It's okay…” Her eyes linger on my face and her voice trails off. “Why do you look so pale uh? And your voice also sounds thick. Do you catch a cold or something?”“Just a mild one. I need to prep for my first patient. I’ll inform the supervisor on my way.”Sera nods in understanding. “Patient Freya?”I rock my head in a nod.She sighs, closing the chart in front of her with a thump. “She only ever settles for you. Heavens know why.”I smile slightly before walking to my office. I have a small window before the appointment.I was in too much of a rush a
Nat's POVMy hand quietly forms a clench beside me, nails digging into my palm as I listen to the confession of his 'pure' friend.Noelle's disgust couldn’t be any more obvious. [What a shameless worm.]Ivan's soft voice echoes from the other side, the harshness he has when he speaks to me? Gone. Like it never exists.Instead, all that is left is a tinge of surprise as he calls out to her. “Thalie...”There is rustling on the other side, a groan, the sound of skin touching, then Thalie continues. “I love him, Nat. And I wouldn’t be a coward who hides her feeling. He treats me well. When I am sick, he is by my side. When things are dark for me, he doesn’t hesitate to lit it up with his presence. He… is the light that's shining in my heart. I’m being sincere right now. I love him as a person. And as a friend.”The audacity to spit all this and then add the friendship label catches my tongue for several seconds. And when my voice recovers, all that slips past my lips is a hoarse word.“A
Nat’s POVThe evening air bites with a chill the sunny afternoon never has. Each gust through the cab's slightly open window feels like cold needles to my sinus, sending me into another sneeze.“Bless you,” the driver murmurs for the fifth time. I massage the bridge of my nose, muttering a thank you under my breath. My gaze drifts to the window, where beautiful, colorful streaks of lights spread, buildings piercing into the horizon. People pass by in vignette, their figures blurred, each in their own, different world.I can’t help but wonder.Could any of their worlds be as messed up as mine? This tangled, shattered, and miserable?[Stop thinking about it. About him.] That’s all Noelle says, voice trembling, anger brewing in her tone like mist in the cold.Making up my mind to leave is one thing; my aching heart, whose shattering pieces I can hear, is another.I can leave, but can I forget the way I am treated?I am not unfeeling after all. The disappointment is there, pressing agains
