[Can I safely assume this woman has a fucking homing beacon on us?] Noelle mutters, her voice thick with annoyance.

An ominous feeling settles in my stomach, dark and foreboding. My fingers instinctively curl into fists.

It can’t be… right?

The supervisor’s face brightens with a professional smile. “Perfect timing! Come in.”

The door opens, and my vision blur. The supervisor is still smiling. “Natasha, that’s the—”

“The new intern,” I finish for her.

She nods, to my horror. “Why, yes. Thalie Noor, our new intern. She’ll be shadowing you.”

I snap. “Does she even possess the basic qualifications for this ward, or is this just another privileged placement?”

“What do you mean by that?” Thalie’s voice echoes behind me, filled with confusion. Ivan’s arm is wrapped possessively around her waist. They both stare at me; his expression a mix of warning and disappointment, hers wide-eyed innocence.

The supervisor smiles awkwardly. “Natasha isn’t feeling well today. Please excuse her.” With that, she shoots me a glance that screams 'what’s wrong with you' before motioning for the couple to sit.

“Let me formally introduce you. Thalie, this is Dr. Natasha Zorin; a senior OB-GYN and researcher. And Natasha, this is Thalie Noor. She will take over your position.” Her voice turns more reverent. “And this is Ivan Radek, the Alpha of this pack.”

She continues, staring at the file. “Thalie is a remarkably fast learner. She graduated from New Wales’ prestigious academy, and most impressively, she is a personal student of Dr. Mirabelle. You know her work.”

[What?] Noelle cries in surprise. [Is she talking about our Mirabelle? The one who raised you?]

“I think so,” I whisper back. There is only one Dr. Mirabelle in New Wales, a legend in gynecological medicine, a woman of formidable intellect and standards.

[Why would Mirabelle take her as a student? She is definitely lying!] Noelle mutters with deep conviction.

Of course.

She probably is.

Mirabelle; the woman who becomes my guardian after my mother’s death has accepted only one student in her entire career: me.

She turns down heirs, prodigies, and nobles, calling them distractions from the real work. She takes me in after I show interest in the field and because she made promise to my mother. The idea of her taking on Thalie... this performative, manipulative creature — what a joke.

Thalie sweeps her hair off her shoulder, the gesture condescending. “She probably never heard of Mirabelle. It’s understandable. Her work is specialized.” Her eyes rake over me from head to toe.

I tilt my head and glance at her. “Are you certain Dr. Mirabelle accepted you? When she took on her first and only student, she hosted a gala. Every elder and dignitary from three territories attended. I don’t recall hearing your name celebrated at such an event.”

Her smile freezes, but only for a split second.

She blinks.

Once.

Twice.

Then breaks into a chuckle. “What do you know, Omega? You think I’m lying or what?”

Before I can respond, she continues suddenly, her voice dropping. “Your accusation is unexpected. I come here to be beneficial to the pack. Her private acknowledgment is honor enough for me. I don’t need a party.” She shakes her head faintly. “I thought you’d know better. Compared to my senior sister, who also bears the same name as yours, Natasha. You really…” She clicks her tongue. “Not as bright. No offense.”

[Does she know she’s acting like a clown right now?] Noelle cringes. [At the same time, I admire her ability to lie while keeping a straight face.]

“You met Natasha?” I press, now curious how far she can go with her white lies.

And to my surprise, she rocks her head with a sweet smile. “Yes. You don’t expect that, do you?”

Well, I certainly never expect her to somehow meet me in a pack I left years ago.

“We also get along wonderfully. She is my senior, after all.”

I glance at Ivan. “Do you believe her?”

He stares at me with a look that is basically an affirmation, but he doesn’t say anything.

The supervisor clears her throat and cuts in, purposely emphasising what she said earlier. “Natasha, I’m sure you recognize Alpha Ivan. He oversees all pack operations, including this hospital.”

In other words, don't mess around.

Isn't it laughable?

I'm his mate. His fiancé.

But I seem to be the only one aware of that fact.

Even he himself is now hanging around with another woman.

Who can I blame except myself for trusting the lies that left his lips?

No one ever sees us together.

No one.

We seem to be from different worlds, never to collide.

Yet we’ve been skin-deep… soul-deep… bed-deep…

To the public eye, their Alpha is the single, hot, desirable bachelor, the man several women have their sights on.

The same man who tells me he needs time to make everyone accept me, yet is now publicly walking around with his arm wrapped around the waist of another.

While I wait, endure, and expect. All this time.

Nat's POVThalie crosses her legs, her voice filled with arrogance even though she is smiling. "I hope you realize now that I'm more than qualified for this position." The supervisor gives an awkward chuckle. “Well! Natasha will be with us for one more month. Plenty of time for you to learn the ropes together.”“She is planning to resign?” Ivan speaks, his gaze snapping to me, his voice laced with surprise. I ignore him, instead flipping through the files in my hand.He averts his gaze when the supervisor answers. “Yes. Unfortunately. She is one of our hardest workers. I’ll miss her dearly. But one can’t stand in the way of greatness. Wherever Natasha goes, she’ll excel. I know that." Thalie snorts, the sound filled with ridicule. The supervisor’s gaze moves between us, and one could almost see the question mark on her forehead.I shake my head. “I’ll take my leave now.”The supervisor nods, yet Thalie raises her hand. “How about I come with you? I would love to observe." Ivan qui

Nat’s POV“Defensive. You keep acting like a shrew and all, even insulting Thalie. Look, I actually wanted to ask you; since you’re a doctor, regarding what Thalie should take for her cold. But you just wouldn’t pick up your phone to be helpful.”The absurdity of his words makes my stomach churn even harder. I stare into his eyes, fingers digging into my nails. “Do you seriously have no idea who pushed me into the pool and how I caught this cold, huh?”He looks at me, puzzled.I take a deep breath, trying to regulate my emotions. “You know what? You’re a lost cause.”I turn sharply, desperate for space and clean air, but he grabs my sleeve again. His pull is forceful, and I’m caught off guard. His other arm instinctively shoots out, catching me around the waist. His firm grip, once familiar, now feels like a violation that makes my skin crawl.“Where are you going without answering my question?” he demands, voice hard.I want to say something, snap back, shove his hand away, remind hi

Nat’s POVI take a cab to the hospital, glancing at the wristwatch where it displays how late I am. Thirty minutes late.I bite my lips and brush my hair back before entering the building, waving at a few colleagues along the way.As soon as I check in, my colleague with the previous shift immediately wave. “Nat, you’re here.”I walk over with a smile. “Good morning, Sera. Apologies for the delay.”She yawns, stretching as she gets up. “It's okay…” Her eyes linger on my face and her voice trails off. “Why do you look so pale uh? And your voice also sounds thick. Do you catch a cold or something?”“Just a mild one. I need to prep for my first patient. I’ll inform the supervisor on my way.”Sera nods in understanding. “Patient Freya?”I rock my head in a nod.She sighs, closing the chart in front of her with a thump. “She only ever settles for you. Heavens know why.”I smile slightly before walking to my office. I have a small window before the appointment.I was in too much of a rush a

Nat's POVMy hand quietly forms a clench beside me, nails digging into my palm as I listen to the confession of his 'pure' friend.Noelle's disgust couldn’t be any more obvious. [What a shameless worm.]Ivan's soft voice echoes from the other side, the harshness he has when he speaks to me? Gone. Like it never exists.Instead, all that is left is a tinge of surprise as he calls out to her. “Thalie...”There is rustling on the other side, a groan, the sound of skin touching, then Thalie continues. “I love him, Nat. And I wouldn’t be a coward who hides her feeling. He treats me well. When I am sick, he is by my side. When things are dark for me, he doesn’t hesitate to lit it up with his presence. He… is the light that's shining in my heart. I’m being sincere right now. I love him as a person. And as a friend.”The audacity to spit all this and then add the friendship label catches my tongue for several seconds. And when my voice recovers, all that slips past my lips is a hoarse word.“A

Nat’s POVThe evening air bites with a chill the sunny afternoon never has. Each gust through the cab's slightly open window feels like cold needles to my sinus, sending me into another sneeze.“Bless you,” the driver murmurs for the fifth time. I massage the bridge of my nose, muttering a thank you under my breath. My gaze drifts to the window, where beautiful, colorful streaks of lights spread, buildings piercing into the horizon. People pass by in vignette, their figures blurred, each in their own, different world.I can’t help but wonder.Could any of their worlds be as messed up as mine? This tangled, shattered, and miserable?[Stop thinking about it. About him.] That’s all Noelle says, voice trembling, anger brewing in her tone like mist in the cold.Making up my mind to leave is one thing; my aching heart, whose shattering pieces I can hear, is another.I can leave, but can I forget the way I am treated?I am not unfeeling after all. The disappointment is there, pressing agains
