Chapter 6: What Does Our Daddy Do?

After a long and tiring day at the hospital, the last thing I had expected was to receive a call from a strange man who believed that he could get anyone to go against his rules and principles just because he is rich.

Unfortunately for him, I wasn't like the people who made him believe that everyone has a price, and that you can easily purchase whoever you want or make whoever you want do whatever you want because you can afford what he claims his price is.

I could still remember how surprised he sounded when I rejected his offer and also made known to him that I am priceless and that there's no amount of money he could use to buy me. He was surely not used to people refusing such offers when he made them, and that's probably the reason why he sounded so surprised when I rejected his offer.

Now, if he's not a lunatic who is pretending to want to help his sick father, he will have no other choice but to bring him to the hospital for the surgery, and if he tries calling me again to convince me to come to his place for the surgery, I will have no other choice but to block his phone. Who knows, maybe he has an ulterior motive in mind, and that's why he wants me to come over to his place.

With these thoughts running through my mind, I drove into the mansion where I was living with my three bundles of joy and, sometimes, James, who usually comes over and even spends some days with us.

Before I could even finish parking my car and coming down, the triplets had already run out to come and meet me, including James, who followed them from behind.

"Hi, Mum, welcome back," they all greeted me in unison as I got down from my car.

"Hello, my sweethearts, how are you all doing?" I asked them as I bent down a little bit to meet their height.

"We are fine, Mum," they all replied in unison.

"And how was school today?" I asked them.

"School was also fine," they all replied in unison once again before beginning to recount to me at once everything that had happened at school.

Since listening to them recount to me at once everything that had happened throughout the whole day was something I was already used to, I couldn't help but nod in reply to what they were saying as I walked towards James, who was waiting for me to finish discussing with them.

"Hey, sweetheart, welcome back," James said to me with a warm smile.

"Thanks, babe," I said to him in reply, and with that, he collected the handbag I was holding from me.

"So how was your day? I hope it wasn't too stressful?" James asked me after collecting my handbag from me.

"Well, it was stressful as always, but thank goodness tomorrow is my day off. At least I will get the chance to get enough rest and also recover all the energy I had lost since the beginning of this week," I said to James as we were all making our way inside.

"That's very good, so tomorrow, try and get as much rest as possible," James said to me.

"I will, babe," I said to him with a warm smile as we all got to the sitting room, where I was immediately met with the sweet aroma of the meal that was on the dining table.

"Hmmm, something smells good," I said to James as I immediately rushed towards the dining table to check out the meal.

"Yes, babe, I prepared your favorite meal as promised," James said to me with a warm smile.

"Wow, babe, what on earth will I do without you?" I asked him before taking a scoop of the delicious-looking food and putting it in my mouth, and just as expected, it tasted as delicious as it looked.

"What about us, Mum?" Ethan, who was the oldest among the triplets and also the most protective, asked me with pouted lips, which made me smile.

"Of course, you are all precious to me, just like Uncle James, and I don't even think I can live a single day without any of you guys," I said to Ethan before walking towards him and caressing his chubby cheeks.

"You guys should give me some minutes to freshen up, and after that, we will all eat together, okay?" I asked James and the triplets, who nodded in reply, and with that, I quickly made my way to my room to freshen up.

After freshening up, we all had dinner together like one big family that we are, and after spending some time with us, James decided to take his leave as he had some things to take care of for his work tomorrow.

Me, on the other hand, the only thing remaining for me to do was to put the triplets to bed before also going to bed to get some rest.

Just as I was about to stand up to go and switch off the television so that the triplets could finally go to bed, my phone suddenly began ringing.

Checking the caller ID, I saw that it was that of one of my colleagues at the hospital. He was also a surgeon, and since I wouldn't be present at the hospital tomorrow, he would probably be the one on duty.

"Hello, Alberto, how are you doing?" I asked him as I picked up the call and placed the phone on my ear.

"I'm doing good, Amelia. How about you?" he asked me.

"I'm doing good too," I said to him in reply.

"I'm happy to hear that. Actually, I have a favor to ask you," he said to me.

"What favor?" I asked him with an inquisitive tone.

"I know tomorrow is your day off, but can you please cover up for me first thing tomorrow morning? My little princess has something at school tomorrow morning, and as her only parent, I can't be absent," Alberto said to me.

"Seriously, Alberto, tomorrow is my fucking day off," I said to him in a whisper so that the triplets wouldn't hear me swearing angrily.

"I know, Amelia, and that's why I'm asking you," he said to me. "If you cover up for me tomorrow, I promise I will cover up for you for the next two days," Alberto said to me with a pleading tone.

"Okay, I have heard," I said to him with a heavy sigh. "But you better keep your promise about covering up for me for the next two days," I said to him.

"Of course I will. Thanks so much," he said to me with a grateful tone.

"Don't mention it," I said to him before ending the call.

"Okay, guys, it's time to go to bed," I said to the triplets before standing up to go and switch off the television.

"Come on, Mum, can't we watch for a little while longer?" Elana, who was the youngest, asked me with a whining tone.

"No, Elana, you guys will be late for school tomorrow, and I don't want that," I said to her before walking towards the television and switching it off, and with that, I led the three of them to their room.

After lying down, I covered them all with their bed covers.

"Goodnight, guys. Have a nice and sweet dream," I said to them.

"Thanks, Mum," they said to me in reply, and with that, I made to take my leave when Ethan called me back.

"Yes, sweetheart, what is it?" I asked him.

"Our teacher said that before coming to school tomorrow, each one of us should ask his Daddy what the name of his work is," Ethan said to me.

"Ooh, that's good," I said to him. "You all already know what Uncle James does, so simply tell her that," I said to them.

"No, Mum, the teacher said what our Daddy does and not what our Uncle does, so what is it that Daddy does?" Elias, who was the quietest and most intelligent among the three, asked me with an inquisitive tone.

With that, I stood silently in the room while staring at the three of them, as I already knew that this day was surely going to come, only that I didn't expect it to come at night.
