ERDEN

She looks worried, probably as worried as I looked when she suddenly threw the car forward like it was a race car.

She looks down, twisting her hand in her lap. Her lips are turned down stubbornly. “I don't want to talk about it.”

“It can't be that deep.”

Her head snaps up, and she frowns at me. “I said I don't want to talk about it. You're shot, we should stop by the hospital.”

Unfortunately, we can't do that, and I can tell by the frigid tone and the stubborn twist of her lips that I won't get an answer out of her about the driving.

I can tell there's something on her mind though.

Instead of an answer, she presses a shaking hand against my arm, and retches when it comes away stained with blood.

What did she expect? Jelly?

“I thought I could hold it closed…” she gags. “But I can't do that, I still hate the feel of blood.”

The words stab into my chest like a sharp knife.

Still hates the feel of blood…

It's my family's fault that she does. And I'm the reason she's having

LYSSANDRA The suit is charcoal gray, cut so perfectly that it looks like the fabric obeys him out of fear. A black shirt shows under, open at the throat, with no tie. He looks taller somehow, broader, and his outfit is both casual and corporate that my brain is confused for a second. And the bastard looks just as surprised. His eyes sweep me once, slowly, before snapping back to my face like he’s caught himself staring. For a moment, for one dangerous heartbeat, we just look at each other, and there’s no fight left in me. Only the fact that I'm aware of the electric chemistry between us.I clear my throat and snap myself back to earth. “So…will you finally tell me where we’re going, now that I’m paraded around like a doll in a sheath dress?”His mouth tilts in that infuriating almost-smile.He takes my hand like it belongs there, and guides me to the car, opening the door with a courtly ease that makes my nerves fray.Once we’re on the road, I try again. “Where are we going, Erd

LYSSANDRA“That sounds vaguely sexiest.”And sexual, but I don't add that.“Does it?” He rolls his tongue over his lower lip, maintaining eye contact the entire time. “Where's the bandage, Erden? Stop trying to distract me.” I'm distracted. Very distracted, but he doesn't need to know that. He doesn't need to know that under the table, my thighs are clenched hard.“I took it off. It was rubbing me the wrong way.”How's that for most ridiculous sentence of the year?“Was it?” Heat crawls up my throat. Not because of the words themselves, but because of the way he says them. I warn myself not to react. This is Erden, and he chips at my self control slowly until I lose my mind and blow a fuse. “I want to go home,” I say. “Now.”He leans back, the corners of his mouth tilting as though I’ve just offered entertainment. “You’d prefer that?”“Yes, I’d prefer that.”“I’d prefer you stay here.”I laugh. Stay here with him? In what world does that happen?“What do we look like to you, Erd

LYSSANDRA I wake up to the blinding light from my window. I shift, sit up and stretch. Nope. This isn't my bedroom. This bedroom is entirely black. The room swallows light like a black hole. What the hell? I stagger out of bed, knocking my knee into the bed frame before I correct myself, and remember my last memory. Gunshot. Erden. Doctor Hal. Shit! This is Erden’s bedroom. I try the door’s lock, and when it doesn't open at once, I bang my foot against it. It's a metal door, and each bang hurts. The door opens and a man who must have been standing right outside steps in, takes one look at me and flushes bright red. “Em…miss…” he trails off, raises his eyes to the ceiling and only then do I realize I'm in my underwear. My ears burn as I scramble back into the room and find a robe on the bed. Who undressed me? The obvious choice would be Erden, but I can't believe he would do that. I return to the door. “What is happening? Why am I here? And why on the surface of the earth w

LYSSANDRA I keep thinking this man cannot get any worse, and he somehow finds a way to convince me that he can in fact, do that. “Sit down, Cade.” Nathan commands him. “You should be ashamed.” “Well, I am not. She needs to hear the truth.” Cade mutters. When no one supports him, he loses steam. Even Arch is not foolish enough to openly support him in front of Erden.Erden shoves back his chair, stands, and lifts Cade clear off the ground with one hand. He drags him to the door and throws him out with a clear warning. “If I see you again, I'll kill you.”He shuts the door in his face, returns to the table and sits, watching me furtively. He doesn't ask if I'm fine, and I don't need him to. I'm used to Cade bringing up my family every time I make a decision he doesn't agree with. It's his way of manipulating my feelings, of telling me that I'm behaving crazily. I stand shakily. “It is agreed then. Mr. Kryne is the new CEO.” No one argues or tries to speak. I stand and walk awa

LYSSANDRA The flutters in my stomach must not be from butterflies because I feel as though I'll throw up. Erden’s blue eyes are suddenly a dark, empty blue colour that I want to throw up. He backs away from me. “Why would you ask me that? Your father and I weren't that close.”“But your father and him were, Erden. Will you stop lying to me after all these years?” He doesn't answer me. Instead, he leads the way to the same conference room we used the last time. He's ignoring me and it pisses me off. But he's also storming ahead of me. I don't catch up to him until he opens the door and holds it, waiting for me to step in. It doesn't escape my notice how despite being angry, he still does this. This man is a walking contradiction. “Don't ever mention your father to me again, or I will disappear and you will never see me again.” Erden hisses at me. I gulp, becoming just as angry at his words. “He was my father! How can you ask a thing like that from me?!” “Your choice, Lys.”
