No sooner had she thought of the question than she saw him hurrying towards her, a thing slight fair man in a well- cut dark suit.
'Sorry', he said sliding into a seat next to her. 'Am I late or were you early?''I have only been here a moment's, she lied looking at him anxiously as she absorbed the air of weariness that he habitually wore. She had not seen him for about a forth night and she was struck by the way he was aging. He was just forty five but looked alot older. There were lines round his mouth and eyes and his skin had a grey tinge. The waiter brought her drink and looked at Bryan expectantly.'My usual, Tom', David told him with a smile.'Yes, Mr. Stanford', the waiter said beaming. Very pleased that such a man remembered his name.David aye here frequently, he lived in a luxurious penthouse flat, a short walk away. This was the nearest local restaurant and he liked the place alot.He had a married couple who ran his home. Mr. Stevenson was his chauffeur and handyman and looked after his clothes.Mrs. Stevenson cleaned and cooked in the flat but David let them have three evenings a week free and came here to eat.David turned from the retreating waiter to smile at Sharon.'That is my favourite dress. You always look lovely in it', he said and Sharon flushed. She had put on this particular dress because he had always told her that he liked itWorking for him meant a constant succession of important social gatherings for which she required a large and very expensive' wardrobe. She got a special allowance for clothes and David encouraged her to buy from good designers because as his personal assistant, Sharon was always representing the bank and Bryan felt that she should look expensive and elegant at all times. It was the image he wished the bank to convey: moneyed, sophisticated and cool.'Thank you, David. You look very elegant yourself tonight', she murmured.'Why, thank you'. He did not sound convinced as he smiled at her ruefully. He must know that the suit no longer fitted perfectly which revealed how thin he was getting with each passing day.David had never been a heavily built man but after his wife's death three years ago, he list weight as though his flesh was melting away. His hair which had been a lovely pale gold, now had a sprinkling of silver hairs and a haunted look in his blue eyes as a result of the shock he got from his wife's death. He had been driving and had emerged unscathed himself with a few minor bruises and cuts and a slight head injury. Deborah had been killed instantly.David had never quite got over it. He blamed himself and was guilty because he had not died too.If they had had children, it might have been easier for him to recover from the shock but he and his late wife had not got round to starting a family.'Thank you, Tom', he told the waiter as he took his scotch and soda from him.'I'm expecting another guest to join us - would you keep an eye open for him? His name is Bryan Ferdinand'.'There was a gentleman who asked of you previously. He is still in the foyer making calls. I shall find out if he is Mr. Ferdinand sir'.'Thanks, Tom' David said smiling at him again.'Who is joining us?', Sharon asked disappointed because she had been looking forward to a dinner alone with him but not entirely surprised because David used social occasions to smooth business deals.'A cousin of mine', he said with a glint of mischief in his eyes.Sharon was shocked as she said, 'You have never mentioned close relatives'.David had expected her to be shocked by the news and was not disappointedHe had always told her things about himself and his background and Sharon had got the impression that he had no near family because none had visited him even when his wife was alive. His friends were mainly colleagues or business acquitance, most of them married with family commitment s.He had the habit of taking Sharon to any private gathering he was invited to.They were not romantically involved but we're very good friends as well as close colleague.David had told her that he was an afterthought to his parents who had been in their Kate forties when they had him.He was an only child, well loved and indulged perhaps being raised by his old parents made him more serious with his business and tied to duty and work. They had died when he was still a young man leaving him as the heir to the family merchant bank and an enormous fortune. It was not until he left the university did he see much of the world outside banking. He had attended a conference and met a beautiful French model half his age.Deborah had been raven haired, tiny and exquisite.David fell for her like a ton of bricks and married her a few weeks later, only to lose her within three years. A tragedy which had turned him into a shadow of his former self. She liked David alot and felt protective towards him.'Bryan is the only close relative I have', David said now smiling ruefully at Sharon. 'And I have only met him a couple of times, he lives in Switzerland.? And he is in the banking business, of course ' she said.'It doesn't really follow that way but you are right. He works for the Swiss Bank at the moment but I intend to ask him tonight to join us'.Sharon's eyes widened.'I am leaving my shares in the bank to him There is nobody to leave them to. I am telling you this because I trust you. I have not even told him what I intend'.Sharon felt cold suddenly. 'You ate talking as though.... good heavens. You are only Forty. You will marry again. No girl can refuse you with all your prospects. I know you miss Deborah and it isn't easy to get over things like that but you sound like you have given up on life and you mustn't. There is plenty of time for making wills''After working in the bank for years,I'd think that you knew better than that. It is never wise to put off making a will'Sharon called Gabriel to know where he was and he told her that he was in her house getting the food.'Get enough brooth as well. Bryan has woken from the coma and would soon ask for food and the best thing for him at the moment is brooth or something liquid'.'What did you say? Did you say that Bryan is alive, as in woken from his coma?' he asked incredulously.'That is what I said and I am very happy. Hurry up and get here and I shall tell you all the juicy details'.Next, she called David.'Devon was here and boasted if how she had succeeded in killing Deborah. Was she really able to take her from under your care?''Of course not. She was here but though she threatened me and some others with both a knife and gun, before she could even see my goddaughter, she was surrounded and ran off. That must be when she came to the hospital to threaten you too. But how did it go over there? She definitely did not succeed for you to sound so confident'.'Bryan is awake. You can bring Deborah and
Devon got a hold of some good clothes and dressed herself respectably with sun shades and went into the hospital and asked the receptionist where Bryan's wards was. She did well to shed a few years and with her handkerchief, dappled her face as though cleaning the tears from her eyes. The receptionist had heard of the man and the misfortune that had befallen him, so she felt pity for the beautiful lady and gave her directions and Devon was very profuse in her thanks.Sharon had received a call earlier by her servants of Devon's visit and she thanked her stars that she had taken the right measures to protect her child especially when she heard the threats the servants suffered and how they had to lie to mislead Devon.'Let her go in search of us in Serville, the stupid girl', Sharon said and thanked them for their loyalty. She was shocked to see a lady come into the ward just as the doctors stepped out.She looked so different that Sharon did not recognize her at first. But that was unt
Devon went to Bryan's house and after careful survey, found out that both wife and children were not in the house. She came out fully to confront the servants whose loyalty was admirable. 'They travelled to Serville', they told her when they could no longer keep from speaking to her about their mistress and her daughter.'How can they go to Serville when Bryan is dying in the hospital?' she asked not believing a word they said. 'That was what we were told and who are we to doubt our mistress?'. She had threatened them with a knife and with the way her eyes were glinting, they were sure they were facing their eminent death but she changed her mind and left and when they spied from the window and saw that she had really gone, they heaved a sign of relief. The next thing they did was to call their mistress to intimate her that her premonition that Miss Devon was going to come to the house had been right and all that had transpired.Devon thought hard and decided to look in on David bef
When they got to the hospital, Sharon could not wait anymore. She was overtaken by an impatience brought on by desperation. She asked for directions to Bryan's ward and was shown the way to the place. As soon as she saw Bryan and with the cast on his neck, extending to his shoulders, she broke down in tears. Bryan was very pale and looked like he was not breathing and then there was this quinzy breath as though something was stuck in his respiratory system. He looked far worse than she had expected. She fell on her knees beside his bed weeping. Gabriel cautioned her to take it easy before she injured herself and the baby. She was inconsolable.'What will I do Gabriel? What if he does not survive this? Can you see the magnitude of the wound?'Gabriel nodded and though he was sceptical, he still offered words of consolation. 'You do not know that, do you? Someone the doctors have written off had eventually come to life or had you not heard of such scenarios?'Sharon had. David was a cas
Sharon could not believe what she had just heard.'What are you talking about doctor? That Devon escaped and she is on her way to this place as we speak and that she did what toy husband?''Ma'am, I'm sorry but you see we are really occupied and very busy at the moment. I just took the time to get in contact with you because I felt that you should know'.'What happened to my husband dammit!' she yelled panicking. If Bryan was fighting for his life, then who was going to love and protect them from the devilish Devon?'The doctor kept silent. He understood that she was speaking out of fright but he still did not take kindly to swearing especially by women.Sharon realised that whatever be the problem, it couldn't have been the doctor's fault and she should not let loose her frustrations on him. If she wanted to get more details, then she had to be more civil irrespective of her feelings and disposition.'I am sorry, I didn't mean to speak to you that way but you see, I am pregnant and a
Bryan got to the office and quickly got started with the work that had piled up for him. He normally didn't allow work to pile this way because he was really very diligent with his work but the past few days had been hectic, with him looking for his daughter and almost going insane with worry and fear.Afterwards, he went into David's office and was glad he met him because he was on his way out.'How are they now? How is Deborah coping with the situation? Hope she isn't having nightmares?' he asked anxiously. Deborah was his god daughter after all.'How did you know about the nightmares?' Bryan asked surprised at how knowledgeable he was though he did not have his own children yet.'It is just common sense. A child who goes through what she had been through will definitely have nightmares for a while till she totally forgets about the experience'.'She actually had nightmares last night and had to sleep with us because she refused to go back to her room out of fear'.' You will have
