Author's POV

Emerald was still in her bed, staring at the window lazily.

Ruby came to check on her.

"What's wrong with you? Don't you want to go to work? You are already late!"

She has never seen her so demotivated.

Emerald sighed and sat up in her bed.

"I don't want to go to work today!"

Ruby raised her eyebrows amused.

"You don't want to see Egon? That's new! What went wrong?"

Emerald scowled.

"He thinks, I just want to climb his bed."

Ruby's eyes widened.

"Shit! Did he say that to you?"

"Hmm!"

Emerald ran fingers through her hair.

"I want to beat the shit out of him..."

"What did you do then?"

Ruby asked shocked. Because she knows that Emerald won't take the disrespect.

"I slapped him!"

She said unbothered.

Ruby's jaw dropped to the floor.

"You did what?"

She gasped.

"Emerald, you slapped a mafia king. People can't even stand properly in front of him and you slapped him?"

"I am not scared of him, Ruby"

She snapped at her.

"Stop acting like he will eat you alive... He deserved it. And if he wanted to, he would have hurt me by now, so shut up..."

Ruby calmed down when she realised that Emerald was not any random girl. Egon loves her and this slap would not hurt him. She cleared her throat and sat beside her.

"You are right... I am sorry, I overreacted... But you can't give up like this."

Emerald shook her head.

"He disrespected me... Now I don't want him!... He can go to hell!"

Ruby could see a glimpse of the Queen in her.

"You will let him go just like this? Just with one slap? I thought you would make his life hell for it."

She tried to cheer her up.

"I don't know!"

She shrugged.

"I guess you were right... I shouldn't get involved with a toxic man like him... He is twisted! I need to rethink my choices. I felt really bad when he said that. I don't know why his words affected me so much."

Ruby sighed, thinking Egon had succeeded in pushing her away.

"Fine! You don't have to do anything which you don't like. Take a day off, I'll send Kathani to take your place and you don't have to see him again."

Emerald huffed and nodded.

"Thanks!"

Egon, on the other hand, was looking at the watch, waiting for her. She wasn't there and he was getting restless to see her.

Her team had already started working but she was missing.

He knows that he fucked up last time, pushing her away is a different thing and hurting her dignity is different. He knows that he very well deserved that slap. He wanted her to go away but now that she is not coming, he is feeling scared. He wants her around.

He called Ruby to check on her.

Ruby looked at Emerald when they saw Egon's name on the screen. Emerald frowned and put it on speaker.

Ruby's stomach churned, scared that Egon would say something which he shouldn't.

"Good morning, King..."

She sounded nervous.

Egon could hear the bird chirping through her phone, realising that her phone was on speaker and Emerald must be listening to him.

"The work hasn't started yet!"

He complained.

Ruby frowned.

"But the team is already there, why haven't they started working... I'll check."

"Who will supervise them, you want me to do that?"

He scolded.

Emerald scowled and rolled her eyes.

"Kathani will be there in a few minutes, King... I apologise for the inconvenience!"

Ruby looked at Emerald who was mocking Egon silently.

"What happened to that brat?"

He frowned.

"Did she abscond or what?"

Emerald grabbed the knife from the fruit basket and tried to stab the phone. Ruby grabbed her hand and clapsed her mouth, restricting her from arguing with him.

"King, she needs to take care of something else... Kathani will handle your work from now on."

"Who gave you permission to change the team?"

Egon scolded and Ruby gulped.

"Changing people, changes vision... Ask Ms Abscond to come to the job in fifteen minutes."

Emerald was cursing him, and he could hear her muffled, mad voice, which made him smirk.

"But King!"

Ruby was again caught between their quarrel.

"If she doesn't want to come to work, then I'll cancel this project and will sue you for fraud..."

He threatened.

"And your sister will be behind the bar for sexual harassment... She has fifteen minutes!"

He disconnected the call with a naughty smirk.

Emerald removed her hand from her mouth.

"This motherfucker..."

She tried to call him again but Ruby stopped her.

"He can do that!"

She said scared.

Emerald scowled at her.

"Are you out of your mind... He is a mafia. Have you ever seen the mafia suing people... And people will laugh at him if he tells them that a girl sexually harassed him. He is making you fool and you are believing him."

Ruby sighed.

"True, but he can hold our payments, and if the word spreads out, then it can harm our reputation... We will lose projects..."

She requested her.

"You have to go back to work... It's a matter of a few days. And you are an expert in avoiding trouble."

Emerald groaned and tied her hair aggressively.

"Fine! I am going there just for you... If he tries to mess with me again then I'll kill him."

She stormed towards the washroom.

Ruby sighed and grabbed her head.

"These two will make me go crazy.... God!"

Egon was looking at the watch. He smirked when Emerald stepped inside his house exactly fifteen minutes later.

She glared at him as she saw him in front of her.

"I thought you didn't want me in your house."

He smirked.

"Right, but you have to pay for what you did last night... Apologies!"

Emerald gritted when he said that.

"Make me do that, you have a week!"

She challenged.

Egon's smirk widened.

"Challenge accepted!"

  • Ashes Between Us!   89. Survivors!

Author's POV Egon held her like a man who had been starving for years and finally had something warm in his arms again. His arms tightened around her lazy morning frame, almost too tightly, as if she might dissolve into thin air the second he loosened his grip.“To be honest,” his voice came out low, a confession dragged straight from the center of his chest, “I thought you would never accept me again.”His thumb brushed her waist in slow circles — a habit he developed long before, one that never truly died.“I still don’t feel deserving of you,” he admitted, the words cracking slightly, “even though I’m selfish enough to not let you go.”Emerald’s answer came not through words at first, but through the way she burrowed even closer, nuzzling into the warmth of him like she was trying to sink into his bones. There was no fear, no hesitation — just a quiet, hungry comfort she had missed far more than she had expected.“I was in the same dilemma,” she murmured. She tilted her head to me

  • Ashes Between Us!   88. Twisted Memories!

Author's POV Rafael had been too calm-too smug-when he asked her, "Are you ready to meet the real you?"There was something hidden behind that tone... something sharp, something calculated. Emerald should have protested. She should have pushed back. But at that moment, she was willing to walk into fire if it meant finding out who she really was.Rafael placed a naked sword on the table.A heavy, gleaming blade with a history soaked into its metal."Seen one of these before?" he asked, eyes gleaming with mischief. "Wanna touch?"Emerald's brows pulled together. She knew that question wasn't innocent. Nothing Rafael did was ever innocent. But the curiosity inside her was louder than the warning bells. She stepped forward and traced a finger along the blade-slowly, thoughtfully. She couldn't imagine the things Rafael had used this sword for.She wasn't sure she wanted to imagine."Ohh... who do we have here?"The voice behind her made her turn sharply.Another man stood there. Strikingl

  • Ashes Between Us!   87. The Love!

Author's POV The ocean was about to witness their reunion again.Egon’s lips crashed onto hers with a hunger that had been rotting in his chest for far too long. It wasn’t a kiss — it was a claim, a scream, a desperate pull of two halves that had been cut apart and finally slammed back together. Emerald clutched his shirt with trembling fingers, dragging him impossibly closer, like she wanted to pull him under her skin.He groaned into her mouth, a raw, broken sound that betrayed every night he spent missing her. His body pressed into hers as the waves curled around them, cool on their skin, nothing compared to the heat rising between them. Her hands cupped his jaw, fingers shaking as they memorised him again — the stubble, the sharp lines, the warmth that had once been her home.“Egon…” she whispered against his lips, breath trembling. He closed his eyes like her voice hurt him. “Say it again,” he murmured, forehead resting on hers. “I’ve forgotten how to breathe without it.”She di

  • Ashes Between Us!   86. She is back!

Author's POV Egon had abandoned the island castle long ago. Every stone, every hallway, every echo of that place carried the weight of what had been done to them—every wound they endured, every injustice that had carved itself into their story. Without Emerald beside him, the castle had become a living ghost, suffocating him with memories he wasn’t strong enough to face.So he had walked away.Yet today, he stood in front of it again. The familiar walls stared back at him like they recognised him—like they remembered the man who once ruled them. And standing there now, the past scraped against his heart like broken glass, burning through the thin layer of hope he was clinging to.Emerald wanted to talk. But she wanted to talk here.In front of the castle that had shaped everything between them.He didn’t understand what she had in mind, and that uncertainty was eating him alive. His hope had been dying since last night.
