Maya didn't flinch. She kept her palm closed around the tiny note, forcing her pulse to slow as Julian’s hand rested heavily against the side of her neck. His skin was warm, radiating that intense, magnetic Alpha energy that threatened to disrupt her focus.

"I’m not hiding anything, Julian," Maya said softly, tilting her head slightly into his touch—a calculated move of artificial submission that made his golden eyes darken. "It’s just overwhelming. The noise, the stares... Elder Torin's words."

Julian’s thumb stroked the line of her jaw, his gaze dropping to her mouth before searching her eyes. For a second, the cold, dangerous Alpha softened, replaced by something far more complex and dangerous: genuine curiosity.

"Torin is a relic of a dying era," Julian murmured, his voice dropping so low only she could hear over the swelling violin music across the hall. "He thinks strength is measured in bodies and burned land. He forgets who actually commands this pack."

"And who commands it?" Maya asked, taking a subtle step closer to him, letting her dress brush against his tailored trousers. "The man who signed the order to destroy my family... or the elders whispering behind his back?"

Julian’s posture went rigid. His grip on her neck tightened just enough to assert dominance, his golden eyes flashing with a sudden, lethal intensity.

"Careful, little bride," he purred, his breath warm against her cheek. "You're asking questions that could get a weaker woman thrown into a cell."

"I told you before," Maya whispered back, holding his stare without blinking, "I am not weak."

Julian stared down at her for a long, heavy moment, a slow, dark smirk spreading across his face. Before he could demand to see what was in her hand, a loud chime echoed through the grand ballroom, signaling the midnight toast.

"Save that fire for later," Julian said, releasing her neck and sliding his hand down to lock his fingers firmly with hers. "We have a toast to make."

As he pulled her toward the central stage, Maya used the split-second distraction to slide the tiny folded note into the hidden seam of her lace sleeve.

Two hours later, the estate had finally fallen quiet.

Maya stood in her private bathroom in the East Wing, the heavy oak door locked behind her. She pulled the crumpled slip of paper from her sleeve, smoothing it out on the marble vanity under the soft vanity light.

Written in precise, hasty handwriting was a single line:

The ledger for the Eastern Assault is kept in Vault 3. Access requires Julian's biometric keycard and the master seal held in his private study safe. Beware of Elder Torin—he has placed eyes in your corridor.

Maya let out a slow, steady breath as she burned the paper over a small glass dish, watching the flames swallow the ink until nothing remained but grey dust.

The order came from the Alpha's desk, but the signature wasn't his.

The waiter's words from the banquet kept repeating in her head like a relentless drumbeat. If Julian hadn't signed the extermination order for her family, then someone inside his inner circle had framed him—or used his authority to wipe out her bloodline without his knowledge.

Either way, the truth was locked inside his private study.

She waited until 3:00 AM, when the pack house was wrapped in total darkness and the guard shifts rotated. Dressed in her dark leggings and soft-soled leather boots, Maya unlocked her door and slipped into the corridor.

The hallway was pitch black, saved only by the faint silver moonlight spilling through the high arch windows. Keeping her back pressed against the wall, Maya glided toward the central staircase, her senses heightened to catch the slightest sound.

She reached the mahogany doors of Julian's private study without triggering any alarms. Pulling a thin steel lockpick tool from her pocket, she bent down to inspect the keyhole.

Click.

The lock gave way with a soft pop. Maya eased the door open just enough to slip inside, closing it silently behind her.

The study smelled of rich cedar, leather, and Julian's lingering pine scent. Shadowed moonlight poured through the floor-to-ceiling glass window, illuminating his massive mahogany desk and the steel safe set into the far bookshelf.

Maya moved quickly, stepping toward the desk to check for his keycard.

"Looking for this?"

A lamp on the side table flickered to life, bathing the room in warm, golden light.

Julian was sitting in the leather armchair near the window, a dark silk robe draped over his broad shoulders, his chest bare, and his golden eyes locked onto her. In his right hand, resting casually on his knee, was the black biometric keycard.

Maya’s breath caught in her throat.

"You really are a terrible listener, Maya," Julian said, his baritone voice sending a shiver straight down her spine as he stood up, taking a slow step toward her. "I told you what would happen if I caught you wandering after midnight."

  • Ashes Of Desire   The Serpent Garden

The grand courtyard luncheon was designed to project absolute stability, but the tension beneath the surface was thick enough to choke on. Long tables draped in white linen were laden with silver platters, surrounded by high-ranking pack members who whispered behind crystal goblets. Julian pulled out a wrought-iron chair for Maya before taking his seat beside her, his powerful frame remaining rigid and alert. He kept one hand resting casually on the tablecloth, his fingers brushing the back of Maya’s hand in a silent, grounding gesture of solidarity. "Enjoying the festivities, my dear?" Elder Torin asked from across the table, his voice grating like dry stones. His gaze was fixed on Maya with predatory calculation. "Adapting to the Bloodmoon pack is rarely easy for outsiders." Maya offered a composed, elegant smile, masking the sudden spike of adrenaline in her veins. "It helps to have a guide who knows how to navigate the wolves, Elder Torin." Torin’s lips twitched into a thin, h

  • Ashes Of Desire   The Public Mask

The morning sun cast a sharp, golden glare across the central courtyard of the Bloodmoon Estate. By 9:00 AM, the courtyard was a hive of activity, buzzing with pack members, couriers, and low-ranking elders murmuring among themselves about the security lockdown from the previous night. Maya stood before the floor-to-ceiling mirror in her dressing room, smoothing down the fabric of a deep emerald silk dress that hugged her frame with quiet elegance. Her hair was swept up into an intricate, polished braid, giving her the exact appearance of a high-ranking Luna stepping out into the public eye. The door to her suite swung open without a knock. Julian stepped inside, dressed in a tailored charcoal suit that accented his broad shoulders and commanding stature. His golden eyes swept over her, lingering for a fraction of a second on her face before a slow, approving smirk touched the corner of his lips. "You clean up well for an alleged intruder," Julian mocked softly, closing the door b

  • Ashes Of Desire   Shadow In The East Wing

The heavy oak door of Maya's suite clicked shut behind her, sealing her off from the glaring fluorescent lights and heavy boots of the security detail. She leaned back against the wood, letting out a long, shuddering breath that she had been holding since the alarms blared in the vault. Her fingers were still tingling from the residual heat of Julian’s touch. The man was a walking contradiction—a ruthless Alpha who commanded fear, yet possessed the sharp intellect to realize his own signature had been forged. If Torin forged that execution order, Maya thought, walking over to the floor-to-ceiling glass window to stare out into the black expanse of the northern forest, then the entire war three years ago was built on a lie. A faint rustle of gravel outside her window snapped her out of her thoughts. Maya froze. Her room was on the second floor of the East Wing—a height that no normal human could reach without climbing equipment. Yet, pressed against the exterior glass panel, a dark

The red emergency strobe turned the stainless-steel walls of the sub-level corridor into a flashing chamber of blood and shadow. The screeching siren echoed off the bedrock, vibrating straight through the soles of Maya's boots. Julian didn't hesitate. With one hand gripping his sidearm, his other arm wrapped securely around Maya's waist, yanking her hard against his side as he pivoted away from the closing door of Vault 3. "Keep your head down," Julian ordered, his baritone voice cutting cleanly through the screeching alarm. They sprinted down the narrow corridor toward the main security stairwell, the sound of heavy combat boots clattering against the metal grates echoing from above. The automated lockdown protocols had sealed the heavy blast doors at either end of the hall, trapping them in the central junction between Sector 2 and the core archive vaults. "We're cut off," Maya said, her breathing steady despite the chaos. Her mind raced, calculating angles and escape routes. "T

  • Ashes Of Desire   Into the Archives

The sub-level corridor beneath the Bloodmoon Estate was carved directly into the mountain's bedrock. The air was crisp, smelling faintly of ozone, damp stone, and old parchment. Overhead, strip lights hummed with a low, modern vibration, casting stark white beams across the stainless-steel doors lining the hall. Maya walked half a step behind Julian, her eyes scanning every security camera and biometric scanner they passed. "You're quiet," Julian noted without looking back. He wore a simple dark shirt and trousers, the keycard held securely in his right hand. "I'm observing," Maya replied smoothly. "You brought me to the place you strictly forbade me from visiting twelve hours ago. I'm waiting to see where the trap is." Julian stopped in front of a heavy reinforced steel door marked VAULT 3: HISTORICAL & TERRITORIAL RECORDS. He turned slowly, his golden eyes fixing on her face with quiet intensity. "There is no trap, Maya," he said softly. "You wanted answers about the eastern fi

  • Ashes Of Desire   Cornered In The Den

Maya didn't back away. Turning to run would only confirm her guilt and trigger his predator instincts, making him hunt her down before she reached the hallway. Instead, she straightened her spine and met his golden gaze head-on."You knew I would come," Maya said, her voice dropping its soft, timid edge entirely.Julian’s lips curved into a sharp, dangerous smile. He closed the distance between them with slow, deliberate strides until he was standing right in front of her. The heat off his chest radiated through his open robe, and the rich scent of cedar and pine filled the small space between them."I suspected," Julian purred, tossing the biometric keycard onto the desk behind him with a dull clatter. "You play the fragile, broken bride well enough for the council, Maya. But your eyes... your eyes are always calculating. You look at my pack house not as a home, but as a target."He reached out, his long fingers cupping the back of her neck. His grip was firm, holding her in place wh
