THE SILENCE BETWEEN US

last update Last Updated: 2025-05-16 10:34:08

HENRY’S POV

The house was quiet.

The kind of silence that clung to your skin and refused to let go. It had been like that since they argued. Eva had barely said a word after they went to bed. She just lay there, facing the wall, breathing steady, but Henry knew she wasn’t sleeping.

Neither was he.

Now it was morning. The soft golden light peeked through the curtains, brushing over the hardwood floor and across the edge of the bed. But Henry didn’t move. He was still staring at the ceiling, hands folded across his chest, replaying everything in his head.

The balcony.

The way Eva looked at Lucas.

The conversation he walked in on.

She had turned around so fast when she heard him, like she had been caught doing something she shouldn’t.

He hated this. Hated even thinking it. But the thoughts came anyway.

Had something been going on?

Was there something between them that she never told him?

Henry closed his eyes for a moment, trying to push the images away. He remembered another day, months

  • BETRAYAL GAME: HIS BOSS, MY OBSESSION    TORN APART

Eva’s POVThe moment Henry turned away, I gripped my phone like it was the only thing tethering me to the world. My pulse was uneven, fingers shaking. I stared at the dark screen, hoping it would light up again, hoping his name would flash across it.But it didn’t.Lucas hadn’t replied. Not even a single word. No call. No explanation. He was just gone.I pressed the phone against my chest, hoping it would absorb the ache, calm the storm rising behind my ribs. But the silence was louder than any ring. It pulsed in my ears, crawled into my skin. I sat down slowly on the edge of the bed, trying not to make a sound, trying not to fall apart.Across the hallway, I could hear Henry moving in the kitchen—opening cabinets, the kettle clinking softly, footsteps creaking against the floor. Familiar sounds. Safe sounds. But I didn’t feel safe.I felt like I was being torn in two—one part of me wanting to reach for the man making coffee in the kitchen, and the other part still spinning around a g

  • BETRAYAL GAME: HIS BOSS, MY OBSESSION    WHEN TRUST FALTERS

EVA’S POVThe ride home was quiet. Henry didn’t speak, and neither did I. I could feel the weight of his thoughts in the air, heavy and thick. I kept my eyes on the window, the city lights blurring as we passed street after street. I wanted to say something, anything but I didn’t know what would make things better. When we pulled into the driveway, he turned off the engine but didn’t move. I waited a moment before reaching for the door handle.“Eva,” he said finally, voice low.I paused. “Yeah?”“We’ll talk inside.”I nodded without looking at him and stepped out.Inside the house, the warm scent of vanilla from the candle I had left burning earlier filled the air, but it did nothing to ease the tension. I slipped off my heels and dropped my purse on the table. Henry followed, quiet still, but I could hear the frustration in every step he took.I went into the kitchen and poured two glasses of water, more out of habit than thirst. When I turned to offer him one, he just looked at me,

  • BETRAYAL GAME: HIS BOSS, MY OBSESSION    A NIGHT OF FACADE

EVA’S POV The day after meeting Mark, I sat alone in my apartment, the weight of his words pressing heavily on my chest. He had warned me that someone close might be monitoring me, and now, every glance from Henry felt scrutinizing. His smiles, his touches—all seemed tinged with suspicion. I questioned every moment, every memory, wondering if I had missed signs. Weeks passed, and the invitation to Lucas and Antonia's wedding arrived. Attending felt like a dagger to the heart, but declining would raise questions. Henry was eager, excited even. He saw it as a chance to celebrate with colleagues and friends. I plastered on a smile, agreeing to go, while inside, turmoil brewed. The ceremony was beautiful, set in a grand hall adorned with white roses and golden drapes. Antonia looked radiant, her gown shimmering under the chandeliers. Lucas stood tall, his eyes scanning the crowd, briefly meeting mine. I quickly looked away, focusing on Henry's hand holding mine. At the reception, laugh

  • BETRAYAL GAME: HIS BOSS, MY OBSESSION    AN ENEMY WITHIN

EVA’S POV As I ride to my next destination, to see Mark, the thought of Lucas's words rings like a bell in my ears as I drive down the road. Could he be right? Can't I ever forget about him? I dialed Mark's number, and he gave me a location. I dropped the call and headed straight to the location. It's a 30-minute drive from my current location. Mark. That was my next stop. I didn’t waste any more time. The city moved around me, cars honking, people walking by, their lives untouched by the mess mine was becoming. I kept wondering if I should’ve told Lucas more. But what was the point? He didn’t care—not really. Whatever we had was behind us. At least that’s what I told myself. When I pulled up in front of Mark’s small office building, my stomach twisted. I hadn’t seen him since before the wedding. He was the only person I knew who might have answers—or at least help me feel like I wasn’t going crazy. I buzzed in, and a moment later, the door unlocked with a click. Mark was

  • BETRAYAL GAME: HIS BOSS, MY OBSESSION    A THREAT IN THE SHADOWS

EVA’S POV I caught up with Lucas just outside the lobby as he stepped through the glass doors, briefcase in hand. He paused when he saw me hurrying toward him, eyebrows lifting in polite surprise. “Eva?” he said, his tone neutral and distant. “Lucas, wait,” I called, coming to a stop directly in front of him. My heart pounded against my ribs. “Do you have a minute? I want to have little discussion with you on something very important.” He glanced at his watch, then met my eyes. “All right.” He gestured toward a small café across the street. “Let’s talk there.” We crossed the street side by side and settled into a corner table beneath a striped awning. The late afternoon warmth pressed against my shoulders, but I barely noticed it. My pulse throbbed in my ears. He slid onto the wooden chair, folding his arms. “So,” he said, voice polite, “what’s this about?” I took a deep breath and placed my purse on the empty chair beside me. With trembling fingers, I fished my phone fro

As the party wrapped up and people began to say their goodbyes, I was still in shock from the news, and now Lucas was nowhere to be found after he made the announcement. Just then, Henry approached me. 'Hey, Eva, it's getting late,' Henry said. 'Time to head home, I think.' 'I think you're right,' I replied. 'Shall we?' Henry asked, gesturing toward the door. I nodded, and we joined the others heading out. The drive home was a silent blur. Henry steered through the city streets with gentle concentration, his hand resting on mine. I stared out the window, the streets’ lights dancing past like distant memories. The party’s clamor still echoed behind my eyelids—Lucas’s announcement ringing in my head, the anonymous warning text pulsing in my pocket. When we pulled into the driveway, I was so exhausted I could barely lift my feet. Henry helped me inside and guided me to bed. “You need rest,” he murmured, brushing a loose strand of hair from my face. I nodded, my limbs heavy as

  • BETRAYAL GAME: HIS BOSS, MY OBSESSION    THE WEIGHT OF SILENCE

Eva's POV Henry’s voice reached me like a slow echo from a distant shore. “Eva,” he said, placing a hand on my arm. “Is everything okay with you?” I turned to him, blinking as if I had just woken up. My chest tightened, and I forced a smile that didn’t quite reach my eyes. “Yeah,” I said, brushing imaginary lint off my dress. “I’m fine. Just… surprised. Lucas, getting engaged? I didn’t see that coming.” He studied me for a second longer than felt comfortable, his eyes searching mine like he was trying to read a hidden message. “You sure? You seemed more than just surprised. You looked like you saw a ghost.” I laughed, soft and forced. “Don’t be dramatic.” But even as the words left my mouth, I could feel the tremble in my voice. I wasn’t okay. Not really. Something inside me had shifted the moment Lucas said those words. I could still hear them—ringing in my head like a bell I couldn’t silence. I tried to shake it off. Tried to focus on the music, on the people still clapping an

  • BETRAYAL GAME: HIS BOSS, MY OBSESSION    THE ANNOUNCEMENT

HENRY’S POV The sun broke through the curtains in thin, golden rays, spilling over our room like a promise of peace. But I knew today wouldn’t be peaceful. It was the day of the company event, the one Lucas had called while Eva and I were still in Paris. I stood by the window, already dressed in a clean, pressed suit. My tie was neatly knotted, but I kept adjusting it like it was the reason for the tightness in my chest. Behind me, Eva stirred in bed. "You're up early," she said, her voice groggy. I turned and gave her a soft smile. "Yeah. Big day today. The meeting. The one Lucas called." She sat up slowly, the sheets falling from her shoulders. Her eyes were still heavy with sleep, but I could already see the storm building behind them. "He couldn't wait until after our honeymoon?" she asked, rubbing her temple. "Seriously, babe." I walked over and sat beside her. "I know. It threw me off too. But he's the boss. Whatever he wants to announce, it must be important." She looked
