LOGINISADORA’S POV
The cameras went off like a flash of lightning the second the glass doors opened, and for a second I genuinely thought I was going to throw up right there on the red carpet.
Reporters were screaming my name and shoving black microphones toward my chin, and trying to trip me up just to get a good photo.
Rafael reached out to grab my wrist to pull me back, but I yanked my arm away so hard my shoulder popped.
I did not care about anyone anymore. My parents were yelling somewhere behind me in the crowd, their voices full of panic, but I did not stop.
I did not look back or answer a single question, and I did not give them the scene they wanted.
I just ran straight into the back of the car, pulled the door shut, and locked it.
I sat there in the dark while the driver pulled away, staring down at my hands.
They were shaking so badly I could barely keep them still.
The truth about what my family had done was sitting right in my throat, dry and bitter. Everything I thought was real about my life, was completely fake.
My parents were not good people who just made mistakes. They were cold, selfish, and cruel.
Then, sitting in that dark car and listening to the rain hit the roof, I made up my mind, that I was done letting them lie to me. I was done being the good girl who kept her mouth shut to protect their names.
The car dropped me off near the emergency room doors twenty minutes later as the air outside was damp and cold, and it bit right through my thin evening dress.
The hallway inside smelled like cheap bleaches and old floor wax and a low, annoying buzz came from the long lights overhead.
My mother was sitting on a yellow plastic chair outside room 402. Her hair was a mess, and her expensive dress was wrinkled, and she looked fifty years older than she was three hours ago. When she heard my heels clicking on the floor, she raised her head. Her makeup was smeared all over her cheeks.
"Isadora," she said, her voice dry as dust as she tried to stand up, but her knees gave out and she sat back down.
"Your father had a heart attack right after you walked out."
I stood five feet away from her and crossed my arms over my chest.
Honestly, I did not feel bad for her or I feel bad for my father either but I have to maintain my composure. "Is he dead?" I asked.
"No," Beatrice said, wiping her nose with crushed tissue. "He is in surgery and the doctor said his heart just gave out from the stress."
I looked at the cheap plastic clock ticking on the wall. "Good. Maybe now he knows how it feels."
"How can you say that?" Beatrice sobbed, looking up at me like I had just slapped her across the face. "We are losing everything, Isadora. The press is going to ruin us and the family name is gone."
"You ruined us," I said, keeping my voice as low and quiet as I could. "Not the press, all of these what because of you. I want to know about Rosalind, Mom. And if you lie to me right now, I swear I will walk out that door and you will never see my face again."
My mother squeezed her eyes shut and started rocking back and forth on the plastic chair. "It was Everett," she choked out, with her shoulders shaking.
"Your grandfather. He owed money to people you do not ever want to meet. Millions of dollars, and he lost it all on bad investments and gambling."
"And what did that have to do with a newborn baby?" I asked, taking one slow step toward her.
"They came to the house the night she was born," Beatrice said, staring down at her own shoes like she could not bear to look at me anymore.
"They said they would kill all of us if Everett did not pay them back that night and your father made a deal with them. He told them they could take the baby and sell her through an illegal adoption ring overseas to clear his blood debt."
The room felt like it lost all its air at once as my stomach turned completely upside down, and for a few seconds, I could not breathe through my nose.
I had to grab the back of a chair just to keep my feet under me.
They did not just give her up because they were young or scared. They traded my little sister away like a sack of garbage to pay off an old man's gambling debt.
"And you let him?" I asked, as my voice did not even sound like mine anymore, but sounded small and broken.
"You sat in that room and let him hand your baby over to criminals?"
"I had no choice Isa!" My mother cried out, reaching her hands up toward me.
"Everett said he would leave us with nothing! He said we would be on the street!"
"You had a choice mother," I said, stepping back so her hands could not touch my skin. "You chose your big house and your expensive clothes over your own child. You are disgusting."
"Isadora, please," she begged, with tears spilling over her chin and falling onto her dress. "I am your mother and you cannot leave me here by myself."
"I am not your daughter anymore mother. And don't you bother coming to look for me, because you have ruined my life completely." I said as I turned around and walked down the long, bright hallway without looking back once.
The automatic doors slid open, and the night air hit my face again and my felt cold, but my head felt clear for the first time in my life.
I was going to find my sister, no matter how long it took or how much it cost me.
I pulled my phone out of my purse and switched it back on as the screen lit up instantly with a new message from a number I did not recognize and it read, ‘If you want to see Rosalind alive, come to the old docks alone right now.’
ISADORA’S POVRafael grabbed my waist on the dark balcony and kissed me until my legs could not hold my weight anymore. We fell asleep holding each other tight, ready to face the war that was coming the next day. When I woke up at six o'clock in the morning, the bright sunlight was coming through the big window, and the room was very quiet.I turned my head to look for Rafael, but his side of the bed was empty, and his shoes were gone from the floor.I sat up on the bed quickly, wrapping the sheet around my body as fear returned to my chest and I stood up and walked toward the bathroom, but the door was wide open, and nobody was inside.I walked over to the small wooden table near the door, and I saw a white paper lying right beside my purse.I picked up the white paper with my shaking hands and read the words written in big black ink.It was a handwritten note from my sister Rosalind.I stepped out of our car outside the big auction house in Marbella. Valentina had invited all the r
ISADORA’S POVRafael stood in front of me with his mouth completely shut, refusing to tell me the truth about the secret contract that gave my sister power over his life.I looked at the small gold ring sitting in my open palm, and the deep pain in my chest turned into hot anger as I stepped toward the big window and threw the ring out into the darkness with all the strength in my right arm. The small gold band vanished into the night, and my heart felt like it was breaking into a thousand small pieces. I turned back to face Rafael, wiping my wet face with the back of my hand so he would not see me cry anymore."You are a coward, Rafael," I said, pointing my finger at his pale face as my legs trembled under my weight.Rafael then took a fast step toward me and grabbed both of my hands in his warm palms. "I am not a coward, Isadora," he said, holding my fingers tight while his eyes filled with tears. "I am keeping quiet because I am trying to save your life and your family from total
ISADORA’S POv"You think that simple gold ring on your finger makes you a real wife, Isadora?" Rosalind spat, as she clapped her hands together with a dry laugh that sent cold fear straight down my spine.I pulled my hand back slowly against my stomach, and my skin felt ice cold while my sister took two heavy steps closer to where I sat."I sold those shares to Valentina because you deserve to lose every single thing you own," Rosalind said, as she pointed her fingers straight at my me while her eyes burned with dark hatred."You have always been weak and stupid, and you think Rafael truly wants you for who you are," she continued, and she looked down at my face with total disgust. My throat closed up tightly, and tears pooled under my eyelids while her cruel words tore through my remaining confidence.I looked up at Rafael because I wanted him to step in and shut her mouth, but he stood completely still beside the bed with his hands clenched into tight fists."Get out of our room rig
ISADORA’S POVMy father Peter stood in the middle of the big room with a wide smile on his face as he held the signed paper high in the air and looked at Rafael and me like he had won a grand prize. Valentina stepped closer to Rafael with her head held up, expecting him to smile and accept the deal she made with my sister."Now we own this estate together, Rafael," Valentina said, taking a step toward him as my stomach turned upside down with fear.Rafael did not look at the paper in my father's hand, and he did not smile at Valentina at all either. He took my hand, stepped forward, and placed himself between Valentina and me."I will never do any business with you, Valentina," Rafael said, looking directly into her eyes as my chest expanded with sudden relief.Valentina stopped moving, and the smile on her face disappeared completely."What are you talking about, Rafael?" she asked, reaching out her hand to touch his arm as my mouth grew dry. "I did this for us so we can control eve
ISADORA’S POVThe text message from Valentina showed a photo of Rafael sleeping in her bed while I was lying alone in his apartment.I dropped his phone onto the mattress because my hands were shaking so much, and I could not breathe properly. My mind was spinning with terrible thoughts as I looked at the dark screen lying on the sheets. I gave him my body and my heart last night, but he still went back to his ex-fiancée the moment I closed my eyes. So much pain cut through my chest so deep that I had to sit on the floor for a few minutes just to hold my knees together.I told myself that I would not stay in his house to cry like a weak person. I stood up immediately, put on my clothes quickly, and grabbed my small bag from the table as I left his apartment without making any noise, and I entered my car to drive down to our family estate in Segovia. The rain was falling heavily from the sky, washing over my front glass as I drove fast on the dark road with my eyes full of tears, but
ISADORA’S POVI opened my eyes at dawn and felt the cold sheet beside me where Rafael was supposed to be sleeping. It all started when I was so angry after Valentina stood on that stage in Madrid and told everyone about the joint takeover of my family estate. Then immediately after the gala night, I drove straight to Rafael’s penthouse apartment without waiting for him to explain anything at the gala. I let myself inside the big door using my old code, and I stood in the middle of his sitting room waiting for him to arrive. When Rafael walked inside the apartment and closed the door, I did not waste any time at all as I confronted him immediately."Give me the private keys to my family estate right now," I said, stepping directly into his path as my hands shook with anger.Rafael pulled off his black suit jacket and threw it onto the couch. "I am not giving you any keys tonight, Isadora," he said, stepping toward me as my breath hitched in my throat."You lied to me again," I said, po
