INICIAR SESIÓNISADORA’S POV
I threw my phone straight into the plastic bin by the hospital exit, pushed through the heavy glass doors, and walked out into the pouring rain.
The cold water soaked through my dress in seconds, but I did not care as I stood on the wet curb, raised my hand, and flagged down a passing yellow cab.
"Where to?" the driver asked as I slide into the back seat of his cab, dripping water all over his floor mats.
"The Grandview Apartments on Fourth Street," I said, leaning my head back against the cold vinyl seat. "And drive please fast."
The cab ride took fifteen minutes through the quiet city streets.
I paid the driver with a wet twenty-dollar bill from my purse, got out, and walked quickly through the warm lobby of my building. I took the elevator up to the fourth floor, unlocked my front door, and stepped into my quiet apartment.
I kicked off my soaked heels, turned on the kitchen light, and leaned against the counter, trying to catch my breath after everything that had happened at the hospital.
Before I could even walk to my bedroom to change into dry clothes, someone knocked three times on my front door.
At first I wasn't expecting anyone. At least not today of all days.
I reached into my purse, pulled out my heavy brass keys, and held them tight between my fingers before opening the door an inch.
Then, I saw Marco standing in the hallway with his jacket soaked, holding a thick black folder against his chest.
"Let me in before someone sees me on your floor," Marco whispered, looking over his shoulder toward the elevator.
I kept the door half-closed as I stared at him. "You are Rafael's assistant. What are you doing at my apartment?"
"I know where your grandfather hides his extra set of books," Marco said, looking me straight in the eyes. "And I know you just walked out on Rafael at the hospital."
I stared at him for a second, weighing the risk in my head, then stepped back and let him inside. He shut the door behind him and walked straight over to my kitchen table, dropping the folder onto the wood.
"Why are you helping me?" I asked, locking the door behind us. "You have worked for Rafael for five years so…."
"Everett Ossorio ruined my father ten years ago," Marco said, his face turning hard as he pulled a small USB drive out of the folder. "He bought out my dad's shipping company, stole the assets, and left my family broke. I took this job with Rafael just to get close to your grandfather."
"So you sat in their office all these years waiting for a chance," I said, stepping closer to the table.
"I waited until someone finally stood up to them," Marco replied, sliding the drive across the table toward me. "This has every private email between your grandfather and his offshore bank."
I picked up the drive and looked at it as I looked up to him in curiosity. "I do not know how to read encrypted bank codes, Marco."
"I do," a voice said from the back room as Arthur Vance stepped out of my guest office holding a silver laptop. I had hired him two weeks ago to look into my father's business, and he had been working late in my spare room all evening.
"I heard you come in," Vance said, setting his laptop on the table next to Marco's drive. "Plug it in."
We sat around the table while Vance ran the files through his software. The only sound in the apartment was the clicking of his keys and the rain hitting the window glass. My stomach twisted as line after line of numbers filled up the screen.
"Here it is," Vance said, stopping his fingers and pointing at three rows of red numbers. "The bankruptcy your family declared three years ago was fake."
I leaned over his shoulder, with my heart beating fast. "What do you mean fake?"
"Your dad did not lose his money in bad investments," Vance explained, zooming in on a series of wire transfers dated three years back. "He moved forty million dollars out of his main accounts and dumped it directly into a secret trust fund set up under Rosalind's name."
"Rosalind?" I asked, with my voice dropping. "They used my sister's identity?"
"Her birth certificate was registered to an offshore account the week she was born," Vance said, looking up at me. "And your parents faked their financial ruin so they would not have to pay their debts. They were currently living off the interest from Rosalind's account the entire time."
I started at him with my mouth openrd and totally dumpfounded. Immediately he said that, the truth hit me hard in the chest.
As I realised they had traded my sister away to criminals to cover a blood debt, and then used her stolen name to keep themselves rich while pretending to be broke.
"If we send this data to the state prosecutor, your father and grandfather are going to jail," Marco said.
"Send it," I said without a second of hesitation. "Send every single page."
Vance typed on three keys, closed his laptop, and picked up his bag. "It is done. The files are in the prosecutor's inbox."
Then he picked up his bag and walked out, leaving the front door slightly unlatched behind him. Marco packed up his folder, gave me a quick nod, and followed Vance down the hall.
Then, I sat alone in the quiet kitchen, my head resting in my hands, trying to make sense of the mess my life had become.
Then another soft knock sounded on the unlatched front door, as it slowly swung open.
I stood up quickly, grabbing a heavy glass bottle from the counter as a weapon, but I stopped when I saw who was stepping into my entryway.
It was Rafael.
He stood there in the doorway, his hair wet from the rain, holding a thick black leather folder under his arm.
"How did you find me?" I asked, keeping the bottle raised in my hand.
"Marco told me you came back here," Rafael said, shutting the door behind him and keeping his hands where I could see them. "I know you talked to Rosalind at the hospital and I heard what she told you about five years ago.”
"So why are you here since you heard it? Eh? Get out," I said, as my face turned into fury "You signed those papers and you helped hide her."
"I signed those papers to keep her alive, Isadora," Rafael said, taking one slow step toward me. "Your grandfather was going to sell her overseas and I used my own money to buy her contract and put her in a safe house."
He opened his black folder, pulled out an encrypted silver hard drive, and laid it gently on the edge of the kitchen table.
"This drive has every master password to my mother's private company servers," Rafael said, looking straight into my eyes. "Everything you need to prove she helped your grandfather set up the fake debt is on here."
I looked down at the silver drive, then back up at his face, with my mind racing. "Why are you giving this to me?"
"Because Rosalind lied to you," Rafael said, lowly. "I never loved her. I just kept her safe because she was your sister, but she wants to burn everything down, including you. Just take the drive and use it.”
ISADORA’S POVRafael grabbed my waist on the dark balcony and kissed me until my legs could not hold my weight anymore. We fell asleep holding each other tight, ready to face the war that was coming the next day. When I woke up at six o'clock in the morning, the bright sunlight was coming through the big window, and the room was very quiet.I turned my head to look for Rafael, but his side of the bed was empty, and his shoes were gone from the floor.I sat up on the bed quickly, wrapping the sheet around my body as fear returned to my chest and I stood up and walked toward the bathroom, but the door was wide open, and nobody was inside.I walked over to the small wooden table near the door, and I saw a white paper lying right beside my purse.I picked up the white paper with my shaking hands and read the words written in big black ink.It was a handwritten note from my sister Rosalind.I stepped out of our car outside the big auction house in Marbella. Valentina had invited all the r
ISADORA’S POVRafael stood in front of me with his mouth completely shut, refusing to tell me the truth about the secret contract that gave my sister power over his life.I looked at the small gold ring sitting in my open palm, and the deep pain in my chest turned into hot anger as I stepped toward the big window and threw the ring out into the darkness with all the strength in my right arm. The small gold band vanished into the night, and my heart felt like it was breaking into a thousand small pieces. I turned back to face Rafael, wiping my wet face with the back of my hand so he would not see me cry anymore."You are a coward, Rafael," I said, pointing my finger at his pale face as my legs trembled under my weight.Rafael then took a fast step toward me and grabbed both of my hands in his warm palms. "I am not a coward, Isadora," he said, holding my fingers tight while his eyes filled with tears. "I am keeping quiet because I am trying to save your life and your family from total
ISADORA’S POv"You think that simple gold ring on your finger makes you a real wife, Isadora?" Rosalind spat, as she clapped her hands together with a dry laugh that sent cold fear straight down my spine.I pulled my hand back slowly against my stomach, and my skin felt ice cold while my sister took two heavy steps closer to where I sat."I sold those shares to Valentina because you deserve to lose every single thing you own," Rosalind said, as she pointed her fingers straight at my me while her eyes burned with dark hatred."You have always been weak and stupid, and you think Rafael truly wants you for who you are," she continued, and she looked down at my face with total disgust. My throat closed up tightly, and tears pooled under my eyelids while her cruel words tore through my remaining confidence.I looked up at Rafael because I wanted him to step in and shut her mouth, but he stood completely still beside the bed with his hands clenched into tight fists."Get out of our room rig
ISADORA’S POVMy father Peter stood in the middle of the big room with a wide smile on his face as he held the signed paper high in the air and looked at Rafael and me like he had won a grand prize. Valentina stepped closer to Rafael with her head held up, expecting him to smile and accept the deal she made with my sister."Now we own this estate together, Rafael," Valentina said, taking a step toward him as my stomach turned upside down with fear.Rafael did not look at the paper in my father's hand, and he did not smile at Valentina at all either. He took my hand, stepped forward, and placed himself between Valentina and me."I will never do any business with you, Valentina," Rafael said, looking directly into her eyes as my chest expanded with sudden relief.Valentina stopped moving, and the smile on her face disappeared completely."What are you talking about, Rafael?" she asked, reaching out her hand to touch his arm as my mouth grew dry. "I did this for us so we can control eve
ISADORA’S POVThe text message from Valentina showed a photo of Rafael sleeping in her bed while I was lying alone in his apartment.I dropped his phone onto the mattress because my hands were shaking so much, and I could not breathe properly. My mind was spinning with terrible thoughts as I looked at the dark screen lying on the sheets. I gave him my body and my heart last night, but he still went back to his ex-fiancée the moment I closed my eyes. So much pain cut through my chest so deep that I had to sit on the floor for a few minutes just to hold my knees together.I told myself that I would not stay in his house to cry like a weak person. I stood up immediately, put on my clothes quickly, and grabbed my small bag from the table as I left his apartment without making any noise, and I entered my car to drive down to our family estate in Segovia. The rain was falling heavily from the sky, washing over my front glass as I drove fast on the dark road with my eyes full of tears, but
ISADORA’S POVI opened my eyes at dawn and felt the cold sheet beside me where Rafael was supposed to be sleeping. It all started when I was so angry after Valentina stood on that stage in Madrid and told everyone about the joint takeover of my family estate. Then immediately after the gala night, I drove straight to Rafael’s penthouse apartment without waiting for him to explain anything at the gala. I let myself inside the big door using my old code, and I stood in the middle of his sitting room waiting for him to arrive. When Rafael walked inside the apartment and closed the door, I did not waste any time at all as I confronted him immediately."Give me the private keys to my family estate right now," I said, stepping directly into his path as my hands shook with anger.Rafael pulled off his black suit jacket and threw it onto the couch. "I am not giving you any keys tonight, Isadora," he said, stepping toward me as my breath hitched in my throat."You lied to me again," I said, po
