LOGINISADORA’S POV
I stood outside the dark docks in the cold rain, staring down at the glowing text message on my screen for three whole minutes while the reality of what just happened set in.
“Who could be this?” I pondered.
The anonymous sender had played me like a total fool. They just wanted me far away from the hospital so they could move freely without me in their way.
I crammed the phone deep into my coat pocket, turned on my heel, and ran back toward the main street to flag down a passing yellow cab.
"Take me back to Saint Jude’s Hospital," I told the driver the second I threw the door open and slid into the back seat. "And do not stop for anything."
The drive back felt twice as long as the trip out, my mind running through every possible reason someone would want me out of that building.
The moment the cab pulled up to the emergency entrance, I threw a fifty-dollar bill at the driver, jumped out before he could give me my change, and pushed through the sliding glass doors.
I took the stairs two at a time up to the fourth floor, my shoes making sharp slap sounds against the clean floor as I rounded the corner toward room 402.
My mother was still sitting on that hard plastic chair outside the door, but she was not alone anymore. A girl in a dark jacket was standing directly over her, leaning down so close their faces almost touched. The girl turned her head at the sound of my heavy breathing, and every drop of blood drained right out of my face.
Behold Rosalind was standing right outside my father's room who was the sister I thought was missing.
"You took your sweet time getting back here," Rosalind said, her voice dropping all sweet pretenses as she stepped away from our mother and faced me head-on.
"You sent that text," I said, stopping five feet away from her while my stomach twisted into a tight, painful ball. "You lied to me just to get me out of this building."
"I needed you out of the way for an hour so I could look at our mother without you standing there acting like the golden child,"
Rosalind replied with her lips curving into a cold, bitter smile. "I wanted her to see what she threw away before you came back to play savior."
My mother sat between us on the cold chair, her body shaking as she buried her face in her small hands, completely unable to look either of us in the eye.
"I did not even know you existed until an hour ago," I said, forcing my voice to stay level even though my whole body was trembling with anger and confusion. "You think I wanted any of this?"
"I do not care what you knew," Rosalind snapped, taking a step toward me until I could see the tiny flecks of gold in her eyes. "You lived my life. You wore my silk dresses, took the piano lessons, ate off the silver plates, and you got every bit of love that belonged to me."
"Our grandfather sold you to clear a debt," I replied, pointing a finger straight at her chest. "Our parents gave you up and I was a baby, Rosalind. That was not my fault."
"You benefited from my nightmare every single day you were alive," Rosalind said, her voice dropping to a harsh whisper that hit me right in the chest. "You slept in my bed, you carried my name, and then you went and took Rafael."
Immediately she mention of his name, that made my breath hitch in my throat, but I kept my chin up and refused to back down.
"Rafael has nothing to do with you," I said. "He loves me."
"You really think he loves you?" Rosalind whispered, stepping right into my space but I did not move back.
"Oh sweetheart, sorry dear. Now let me tell you, every time Rafael touched you, he was thinking of me," Rosalind said, her eyes fixed on mine. "Every kiss, every lie in the dark and it was all for the twin he lost. He knew where I was the whole time and he helped keep me hidden. You were just keeping my seat warm until he could bring me back."
My breath stopped as every memory with Rafael suddenly felt like mud. I stared at her, trying to find a sign that she was making it up, but her face was totally still.
"You are lying," I said as my voice barely came out.
"Check it yourself," Rosalind said as she pulled a piece of paper from her pocket and pressed it into my hand. "Look at the signature sis, at the bottom of my transfer papers."
My fingers were trembling as I opened the paper and I looked at the bottom line. Rafael's name was written right there in his dark, heavy handwriting.
Something inside me went cold and quiet as the confusion vanished, leaving only a heavy anger inside of me.
I looked up from the paper, met her eyes. I couldn't bare this anymore, I raised my hand and slapped her across the face to the surprise of everybody watching the scene.
The sound echoed down the quiet hall as Rosalind's head turned hard to the side and she stumbled back two steps, her palm covering her cheek, with her eyes wide.
"Do not say his name to me again," I said, stepping right up to her. "And do not compare yourself to me ever again. You want to ruin this family? Go ahead. But I promise you, you will be dealing with me now."
Rosalind stared at me through her fingers, spat on the floor by my shoe, and walked away toward the exit doors.
I turned around, pulled my phone out, and called Rafael as he picked up before the second ring.
"Isadora, where are you?" he asked curiously,"I am looking for you."
"I saw the papers from five years ago," I said, "Do not call me again."
I ended the call, dropped the phone into the plastic bin by the wall, and walked out into the rain.
ISADORA’S POVRafael grabbed my waist on the dark balcony and kissed me until my legs could not hold my weight anymore. We fell asleep holding each other tight, ready to face the war that was coming the next day. When I woke up at six o'clock in the morning, the bright sunlight was coming through the big window, and the room was very quiet.I turned my head to look for Rafael, but his side of the bed was empty, and his shoes were gone from the floor.I sat up on the bed quickly, wrapping the sheet around my body as fear returned to my chest and I stood up and walked toward the bathroom, but the door was wide open, and nobody was inside.I walked over to the small wooden table near the door, and I saw a white paper lying right beside my purse.I picked up the white paper with my shaking hands and read the words written in big black ink.It was a handwritten note from my sister Rosalind.I stepped out of our car outside the big auction house in Marbella. Valentina had invited all the r
ISADORA’S POVRafael stood in front of me with his mouth completely shut, refusing to tell me the truth about the secret contract that gave my sister power over his life.I looked at the small gold ring sitting in my open palm, and the deep pain in my chest turned into hot anger as I stepped toward the big window and threw the ring out into the darkness with all the strength in my right arm. The small gold band vanished into the night, and my heart felt like it was breaking into a thousand small pieces. I turned back to face Rafael, wiping my wet face with the back of my hand so he would not see me cry anymore."You are a coward, Rafael," I said, pointing my finger at his pale face as my legs trembled under my weight.Rafael then took a fast step toward me and grabbed both of my hands in his warm palms. "I am not a coward, Isadora," he said, holding my fingers tight while his eyes filled with tears. "I am keeping quiet because I am trying to save your life and your family from total
ISADORA’S POv"You think that simple gold ring on your finger makes you a real wife, Isadora?" Rosalind spat, as she clapped her hands together with a dry laugh that sent cold fear straight down my spine.I pulled my hand back slowly against my stomach, and my skin felt ice cold while my sister took two heavy steps closer to where I sat."I sold those shares to Valentina because you deserve to lose every single thing you own," Rosalind said, as she pointed her fingers straight at my me while her eyes burned with dark hatred."You have always been weak and stupid, and you think Rafael truly wants you for who you are," she continued, and she looked down at my face with total disgust. My throat closed up tightly, and tears pooled under my eyelids while her cruel words tore through my remaining confidence.I looked up at Rafael because I wanted him to step in and shut her mouth, but he stood completely still beside the bed with his hands clenched into tight fists."Get out of our room rig
ISADORA’S POVMy father Peter stood in the middle of the big room with a wide smile on his face as he held the signed paper high in the air and looked at Rafael and me like he had won a grand prize. Valentina stepped closer to Rafael with her head held up, expecting him to smile and accept the deal she made with my sister."Now we own this estate together, Rafael," Valentina said, taking a step toward him as my stomach turned upside down with fear.Rafael did not look at the paper in my father's hand, and he did not smile at Valentina at all either. He took my hand, stepped forward, and placed himself between Valentina and me."I will never do any business with you, Valentina," Rafael said, looking directly into her eyes as my chest expanded with sudden relief.Valentina stopped moving, and the smile on her face disappeared completely."What are you talking about, Rafael?" she asked, reaching out her hand to touch his arm as my mouth grew dry. "I did this for us so we can control eve
ISADORA’S POVThe text message from Valentina showed a photo of Rafael sleeping in her bed while I was lying alone in his apartment.I dropped his phone onto the mattress because my hands were shaking so much, and I could not breathe properly. My mind was spinning with terrible thoughts as I looked at the dark screen lying on the sheets. I gave him my body and my heart last night, but he still went back to his ex-fiancée the moment I closed my eyes. So much pain cut through my chest so deep that I had to sit on the floor for a few minutes just to hold my knees together.I told myself that I would not stay in his house to cry like a weak person. I stood up immediately, put on my clothes quickly, and grabbed my small bag from the table as I left his apartment without making any noise, and I entered my car to drive down to our family estate in Segovia. The rain was falling heavily from the sky, washing over my front glass as I drove fast on the dark road with my eyes full of tears, but
ISADORA’S POVI opened my eyes at dawn and felt the cold sheet beside me where Rafael was supposed to be sleeping. It all started when I was so angry after Valentina stood on that stage in Madrid and told everyone about the joint takeover of my family estate. Then immediately after the gala night, I drove straight to Rafael’s penthouse apartment without waiting for him to explain anything at the gala. I let myself inside the big door using my old code, and I stood in the middle of his sitting room waiting for him to arrive. When Rafael walked inside the apartment and closed the door, I did not waste any time at all as I confronted him immediately."Give me the private keys to my family estate right now," I said, stepping directly into his path as my hands shook with anger.Rafael pulled off his black suit jacket and threw it onto the couch. "I am not giving you any keys tonight, Isadora," he said, stepping toward me as my breath hitched in my throat."You lied to me again," I said, po
